"Yes Mom, I invited her for the party tomorrow. I mean, we spent almost every summer there for 5 years. It WAS supposed to be a surprise, but now you know." Kevin laughed as he juggled the phone on his shoulder while he stirred the mixture he'd made in a bowl. His mother's soft voice wafted over the line as she chuckled, a sound that made him smile harder. "So you will be over tonight then, to greet her? Should I wait for you guys to come or...?" he asked.
"No son, I know how much you like her so go ahead and eat with her. You need to stop working so hard and marry that girl. Give us some grand kids." his mom teased, Kevin rolling his eyes.
"No son, I know how much you like her so go ahead and eat with her. You need to stop working so hard and marry that girl. Give us some grand kids." his mom teased, Kevin rolling his eyes. "Mom sure is a trip," Kevin mumbled later as he continued to cook, stirring the sauce so it wouldn't film over. He was the only son of Patanna and Martin Vanguard, the two most hard working Doctors in Belladonna Cove. They were finally retiring tomorrow, the same day Kevin had chosen to throw them a retirement party. "I can't believe she called me a workaholic," he chucked, before he sighed. The food was done, and it was time for him to get ready to leave to pick up the guest of the night, Aarin Shaw. Aarin and her family were long distance friends from France, where Kevin spent his summer vacation for 5 years, starting when he was 15. He'd always had a crush on her, and the families took this to knowledge, forever teasing him about her disinterest in him. Kevin was studious and nerdy, Aarin liked wild and sometimes dangerous guys, guys who she always felt the need to tell him about. She called him nerd as well, but she never meant to hurt him. "Well here goes." he said as he left to get her from the airport.
"You have SUCH a lovely home Kevin!!!" a tall, thin girl with brown hair remarked as she took a look around the spacious room. "Oh thanks, I brought it and fixed it up a bit, but Mom mostly helped." Kevin exclaimed as he walked into the house. Aarin smiled as she nodded approvingly. "Glad to have you here," Kevin said as he walked back into the front room, hugging her tightly as she giggled. There was no way he would prepare himself for what a 10 year break from seeing her would do, but after he got over the shock, he welcomed her to Belladonna. "I'm so glad to be here," she said as they parted. "How is Patanna? Can I call her?" "They are fine, coming over to see you soon tonight. You can call her, I'm going to get dinner started ok?" Kevin grabbed her bags, taking them to the guest room as he left, Aarin chatting with his mother. A quick stir here and we are ready to go," Kevin mumbled as he warmed the food, excited to see his friend again. "She IS just a friend still right Kevin? I mean, she's hot. I mean HOTTER. And she's so sweet, just like last time. And she speaks French....what does that have to do with anything?"
Aarin laughed as she looked at him, before shoving the phone his way. "Mere wants to talk to her baby-ooooooh that smells good!!" she piped as he took the phone, shaking his head.
"I just wanted you to know we're on the way there, save your father a plate love. We love you and see you soon ok?" Patenna said, Kevin hearing his father agree gruffily before they hung up. Kevin sighed as he placed his cell back in his pocket, smiling to himself. "You, get out the pot and go sit." He fussed as he shooed Aarin out the kitchen, Aarin laughing all the way. "You look like such a housewife Kevin."
"HOUSEWIFE? Owww harsh maybe?"
"No...but it's ok you'll do some girl proud, you'll cook them into a stupor ha ha." Aarin teased as she waited for her food.
"Funny.." quirked Kevin as he brought her her plate, wrapping his dad's plate before he made his own. "This is SOOOOOO good!!" gushed Aarin as they ate, Kevin nodding in agreement. "I can cook I won't kill you," he laughed as he took another spoonful. Suddently a sharp pain shot through his head, almost knocking the wind out him.
"Kevin?" Aarin asked as she noticed, before her phone rung. She placed it on silence as Kevin grasped his head, wondering what in the world that had came from. "I;m fine...I'm ok Rin. Just a headache...but it's gone now."
"Well that was a fast headache," she joked, biting into her food as he chuckled, picking up his fork. "Yeah..it sure was," he mumbled his voice trailing off as the room grew quite. "Ummm Aarin, tell me what's new." he piped up after a while, his eyes on the clock as she talked.
It ws getting late.
Where was his parents? They talked for a while, losing track of time as they did. After a while Aarin stood, excsing herself to the restroom. Kevin paused before he took a bite out of his second plate, looking once again at his wall clock.
"Where's Mom and Dad?" he wondered out loud, before reaching into his pocket to find his cell. It wasnt like them to wander around all night. They lived on the other side of town yes, but it was only 1 hour drive to his house in Soriano Place, a popular suburb. His mom's cell rang without an answer, as did his dad's.
"Crap..." he cursed, rubbing his face in annoyance. "Je ne veux pas vous parler!" Aarin fussed as she walked past him, into the front room.
"Ummm Aarin?" he asked as she hung up, tossing her phone into her bag. "Im sorry that was my boyfriend back in France," she sighed as she rolled her eyes.
"OH," Kevin said flatly, as she ran a hand through her hair.
"Parents coming? Its starting to get late..." she asked, placing a hand on his shoulder.
"I called...but I dunno..something isn't right." he answered, lowering his eyes. "I hope they're ok."
"Stop, dont think like that," Aarin fussed, her voice thick with accent. "They will be fine." Time ticked on, Kevin watching the time fly as he worried more and more, calling his parents more urgently. Where were they? Aarin had started playing her guitar, the notes wafting from the strings like fireflies, each note lighting the room. Kevin looked over at the girl who had stolen his heart so long ago, now a woman, a woman with beauty and brains. She was beautiful and he stared blissful as she played.
"Aarin...I" he started, before her phone rang again, playing the tune of some Lady Gaga song as he groaned.
"At least its not Coldplay..."she snickered as she placed her guitar down, Kevin rolling his eyes. "They dont suck." "Did I say they did?" "But you said...." he started, only to be interrupted by his own phone buzzing in his pocket. "You gonna be ok while I take this?" Kevin asked as she nodded.
She ignored her buzzing phone as he left, Kevin answering his phone quickly. She sighed as she waited, going back into the room he'd shown her to, Aarin lying on the super soft bed. Her eyes wafted over to a huge picture of a tree that had stars all around it, the stars twinkling on and off in a sequence, one that made her stare. "Oh my goodness," she said as she ran a hand over the painting, to see it wasnt a painting at all. The tree, black in color was inlaid with some sort of black tile, smooth and cold to the touch. Suddenly she heard a loud thud, followed by a crash. She turned from the picture and ran to the door, out into the hallway where Kevin stood, leaning against a column. "Kevin?" she asked as she rushed to his side, his face blank. He'd became ashen in color, his phone dropped on the floor. Near him was a fallen plant, that was what she'd heard fall she guessed.
"Aarin...Aarin I..." he mumbled as he stared off into space, Aarin grabbing him as she shook him.
"You're scaring me what's wrong Kevin?"
"What? What about them?"
He continued to stare blankly, his voice becoming incoherent and Aarin shook him again, grabbing his face.
"Kevin, Kevin love look at me. What happened to your parents? Are they ok?" she asked as he slowly looked at her, his solemn face cracking as tears poured down his cheeks.
"They're...they're dead..." he sobbed as she hugged him tight, trying not the cry herself. She wasnt prepared for a blow like that as he sobbed into her shoulder, her own tears finding their way in her eyes.
"Kevin...I'm so sorry..."
