Yukin just stood there, watching her through the window as Lisan was talking to the customer not knowing she was being watched. He didn't know what to do. he didn't want to walk away yet he didn't want to miss his chance of talking to her.
Diana: Welcome to- It's you? I mean. Welcome to Lia's.
Yukin: I'm waiting for someone.
Diana: I know. (she said softly) As she walked closer to him, his face widened. It was her. He had not been dreaming.
Lisan: Yukin, it's so nice to see you again.
Yukin: It is. It's been a long time.
Lisan: Almost 3 years. I didn't know you moved back here. Yukin: We've only been here for a few months. I couldn't stay the whole time in China.
Lisan: Oh. Well that's great. I mean.
Yukin: I know what you mean. I see you moved back here as well.
Lisan: Well...short version, I got an offer I could not refuse from my old boss. Now with a little touch up here and there, I own this place. Yukin: Congratulations!
Lisan: Thank you.
She smiled back at him. It was that same smile that he had not seen in years. So full of life. So much joy.
Lisan: So you said WE've only been here..... I take it you got married. Yukin: Yeah, we did. Kima and I. And I have a son. We moved here before he was born.
Lisan face fluttered a little.
Lisan: Well that, that's great! I am happy for you. The both of you.
She nodded to keep herself from showing any other emotion but the thought of him fathering a child put a dagger in her heart. There was a long pause between the both of them. They just stared at each other for a long time. Almost forgetting where they were. He wanted to touch her, he wanted to hold her. To tell her how much he thought about her and how much he still cared about her. That meeting her here after years of being apart must have meant something. But the words just couldn't come from his mouth. She looked so happy. Happy without him. Lisan: So what do you do now, did you ever become a pediatrician? You loved children so much I should have known you would have a few by now.
Yukin: No. I had to stop to help my father with the company. That's why I was able to convince him that I should move back to the states to make the company more global.
Lisan: And so you moved back here?
Yukin: What can I say, I loved the town. Yukin: We have to keep in touch. I tried calling you after you left but it was as if you dropped off the face of the earth.
Lisan: I just needed a fresh start. No attachments to my old life.
Yukin: Oh. I...I see. Lisan: Tell you what. Why don't we get some coffee and chat. You know. Fill in the gaps over the years.
Yukin: I'd like that.
Lisan: I'll be done in about an hour. I have one more client.
Yukin: Great. I'll meet you at the Cafe con Leche. They gave each other a friendly hug and Yukin left the shop. She watched as he walked away. And when he was finally out of sight she took a deep breath. Diana: So are you going to tell him?
Lisan: I will.
Diana: You know he's going to find out.
Lisan: I know. And I will tell him. Later after coffee and a light dinner, Lisan asked him back to her home.
Yukin: I'm so impressed with everything you've accomplished in two years. You've really done it for yourself.
Lisan: I've had some inspiration.
Yukin: Oh....someone special.
Lisan: Yeah, she's wonderful. Lisan: I guess you can call her my muse. My motivation.
Yukin: Oh (voice sounding disappointed)
Lisan: What's wrong Yukin?
Lisan: Oh come now. I can tell when something is bothering you.
Just as he was about to speak the door came open. Diana: Weee're hoooome! Sorry I'm a little late. We just had to stop for some ice cream.
Diana came walking into the living room where Lisan and Yukin were.
Yukin turned to see the woman standing in front of him. It was the same woman at the Salon. Then he understood. He walked over to her and the young child she was holding.
Yukin: You must be her muse.
Diana: Her what?
Lisan stood up behind them. She gave a small laugh.
Lisan: No silly. This is Diana, my assistant. She also helps me with Lia. My daughter. SHE is my inspiration. Yukin looked at the little girl. She couldn't have been no older than 2. Her eyes were just as dark as his with jet black hair like his. He looked over at Lisan with a small confusion. She nodded at him nervously. Afraid of what he would do next.
Yukin: Is she? (pointing to himself)
Lisan: Yes. He stared more at the little girl in still numb from her answer. He raised his hands to the little girl then moved them away.
Yukin: Can I hold her?
Lisan nodded to Diana, who then gave the toddler to her father.
Yukin: I have a daughter? I have a daughter.
He touched her softly to make sure that he wasn't imagining any of it. Slowly touching her as if she was a fragile piece of glass. Yukin held the little girl in his arms. At first she was a little fussy. But with a little patting and a small shush from his lips, she quieted down.
He talked quietly and gently to her. She rested her hands on his shoulder, head on his chest. He was instantly in love. She was a ticklish little girl. That laughed when he made faces at her. She squirmed with delight when he played the claw game with her. A game he played with his son. To Yukin, she was Lisan's gift to him. A token of their affection, that moment of love they had for each other.
Lisan: It's almost time for her bedtime.
Yukin: May I.
Lisan nodded. Yukin gave the toddler a bath and sat on the floor with her and read her a story while Lisan cleaned up for the night. In fact, he read her 3 stories.
Lisan: That's her favorite book. Good choice. Okay little one it is time for bed. Yukin finished the book and gave her a big hug before putting her to bed.
He slowly walked out of the room and turned off the light. Yukin met Lisan who was waiting in the living room. She stood there nervous ready to know his reaction.
Lisan: I know what you must think.
Yukin: Do you? How could you didn't tell me about her?
Lisan: I did. I tried to. The last day I was here, I found out and I asked you to come with me.
Yukin: But you didn't say you were pregnant. Lisan: I didn't want being pregnant to be the reason why you stayed with me. I wanted you to do it because you wanted to, not obligated to.
Yukin: What about afterwards.
Lisan: I did. Several times. I called, I sent emails, I wrote. All of them went unanswered. So I thought you didn't care to know. I gave up.
Yukin: But I came for you. I came looking for you that night. Yukin: You weren't there. Everything from the house was gone. And when I tried calling you changed numbers. I could have been there for you Lisan. I could have helped you.
Lisan: Everything was so mixed up then Yu. You were getting married and you didn't seem like you wanted to stop it. It was like you gave up on us. So I did too.
Yukin: I know. I know I didn't make things any better. I should have been more of a man to you. Yukin: I should have stuck up for us. I should have fought for us. But I was too afraid of everything that would come of it. But I'm not anymore. I don't want to make another mistake. I don't want to....
Lisan: To what Yukin. Without hesitation he grabbed her close and kissed her deeply. She did not pull away. Instead she embraced his kiss and held him tighter. They fell on to the bed and embraced each other more. It was long and passionate. It was a familiar place as their hearts found each other again. Yukin and Lisan had made love that night. It was blissful for both of them as there bodies met again for the first time in years. They slept that night in each other's embrace, holding each other close. That morning as the sun peaked through her window, Lisan woke.
Lisan: Oh my goodness. What have I done?
It had been a few hours before Yukin had woke up. By the time he did Lisan was in the kitchen making breakfast. She was working feverishly with the french toast.
Yukin: Good morning.
Lisan almost jumped at his voice.
Yukin: I went to check on Lia, but she wasn't there. Lisan: Diana came to take her to day care. I have a last minute housecall for a client.
Yukin: I could have stayed with her.
Lisan: You can't
Yukin: What's wrong? Lisan?
He walked closer to her. Lisan: I can't do this?
Yukin: Do what? Breakfast looks great.
Lisan: I'm serious Yukin. I can't just sleep with you and then act like we never happened. We were so dumb last night. You're married.
Yukin: But I don't want to be.
Lisan: But you are. With a child. Yukin: I know. I thought about it as well. But where I want to be is here with you. You and Lia.
Lisan: But what about your family. You can't have two families. And I am not going to do to another woman what someone did to my mother.
Yukin tried to calm her down. Yukin: I've never stopped loving you Lisan. I never stopped thinking about you.
Lisan: Well at least you took a break long enough to have a baby.
Yukin: That's not fair Lisan. I thought no matter how much I wanted you back that you didn't want me. That it was over between us.
Lisan: Oh Yukin. You have to go back. You have to be with your wife and son. Yukin: My marriage to Kima was not something I wanted. I wanted you. And it took me to lose you to find out how dumb I was. Don't you think if I could take everything back I would. I love my son. He is the best thing from my marriage. And I plan to take care of him and love him just as much. That will never change.
Lisan: I can't. I can't break up a family.
Yukin: But you are my family. You have always been apart of me. Yukin: Do you really want that? For me to forget you and Lia?
Lisan: I don't know what I want Yukin. But what I do know is that I can't be the other woman. And I don't want to wait for you to make up your mind. I wasn't good enough for you then. How do I know I am now?
She looked away from him trying to fight the tears. Yukin: Because I was stupid then. I wanted to please everyone else but myself. But I was miserable in the process. I'm tired of doing for everyone else. Of doing what is expected. I want you. I want us.
Lisan: Easier said than done.
Yukin: Tell me you don't want it. Tell me you don't want the same thing and I will go. Lisan placed her hands on his face. She looked deep into his eyes. They were the same eyes as Lia. She closed her eyes to memorize his wonderful face.
Lisan: Go home to your family.
She let go of him. He slowly picked up his his jacket and took one last look at her in the kitchen. Her back was turned to him so he could not see the tears that were forming. She could hear his car speed off.
