I know, I know. You're all probably screaming, "FINALLY!" lol. Sorry y'all! School's had be on my toes constantly but I was determined to get this episode finised. I'm leaving next weekend to go out of town, so episode 5 will be out soon as well (hopefully) anyway, enough chat. ENJOY! please, as always, COMMENT! it makes my day and keeps me writing! love, xtinabobina. Dear Diary,
It has been two days since Nick left and I have not talked to him since. I have been completely alone. Adam spends every day with Amber, trying to get her back on a horse. (It’s his excuse for wanting more time with her.) I think he is bringing her to his place, where they’ll stay for the weekend. Brittany and Emmett are cracking down on wedding plans. I can’t believe how fast they’re moving! I talked to Deanndra this morning and she’s outside of a nearby town called Auburn Hills with her new band. I’m very happy for her. She’s completely forgotten about that cheating, lying, no good Max. I am so very bored. The doctor instructed me to stay lazy for a while until we meet again. The sickness has been less violent the last couple of days and I am already becoming attached to the little one growing inside me. I can feel myself glowing on the outside and I find myself subconsciously reaching for my tummy…
~Amber~
The sun shone brightly through the truck window as we arrived at ‘Lancon Ranch.’ I could see horses grazing in the field, a little foal prancing around alongside its mother, and a small dog that was running full speed toward our approaching car. It was a dog, barking friskily as she began chasing the car up the drive toward the house. “That’s Missy.” Adam said with a casual smile. We drove up and parked in front of the house. It was a small, stone cottage with a wooden swing on the porch. The roof cast a shadow over the porch, making the brilliant colors of the potted flowers hanging from the ceiling stand out like rainbows. It was so beautifully antique, it took my breath away. The whole place, the fields, the barn, the house, all looked like they had come from a movie. “This place…” I began, “Adam, it’s so magnificent.” I said, picking up my suitcases. Adam, with Missy following him, came over and to help me. Soon, two other hyper dogs came running from around the house to greet us. I started laughing and they really went wild, jumping and barking at me playfully. “Sorry about that. Them country dogs don’t have much manners.” Adam said with a wink. “Now, let’s get in to the house and get you unpacked.” I went in to the room where I would be staying. An oak canopy bed was in the corner of the tiny room. I exhaled. A knock at the door interrupted my meditation. “Hello!” exclaimed a female voice. “ah, there you are! I’ve heard so much about you!” the elderly woman continued. “No grandma! She just got here!” I heard Adam yell from the hallway. I was startled and just stared dumbly as the little lady squeezed me silly in her embrace. “Um, hello!” I replied with false excitement. To be honest, I never do well with meeting new people. “Darlin’, I’m so excited that you are here. Come on, let’s go to the kitchen. I bet you’re hungry after that long drive!” I decided not to protest as she grabbed me by the arm and pulled me in to the hallway. Adam gave me an apologetic glance as he followed us to the kitchen. “My turkey is a classic here in Auburn Hills. Farm raised, she is…or was.” Mrs. Lancon let out with a whole-hearted laugh. “Please, have a seat. Make yourself at home. I am so glad that you have come in to Adam’s life. It’s been so hard for him since…” She looked up at Adam as he cut her off, “that’s enough grandma.” At this, I turned several shades of crimson. My face felt like it could melt from the heat and I nearly choked on the turkey. The tension rose in the room until I broke the silence. “Ms. Lancon, this is delicious. It’s so tender and the slight heat from the spices makes for a nice touch as well.” I noted. “Ah, call me Mariah, darlin’. And thank ya!” She said with a wink. Immediately, her kindness made me feel right at home. “Adam, I’m really glad I came out here with you,” I said. “Me too, Amber,” he replied, “Are you ready to go meet the horses?” A familiar form of excitement rose in my stomach, “Yep!” When we got to the barn, the horses that I’d seen grazing in the field all had their heads poking out of their stalls nickering at us as we entered the old barn. “Hey, don’t be rude, guys. There’s a lady present.” Adam instructed the boisterous geldings. “You mean, there are no mares?” I asked him, genuinely surprised. “Only one, and grandma, I mean Mariah, ensures that she receives special treatment. So, she-Mirage- gets her own stall and paddock by the house.” “Ah, I see.” I replied. “You will get to meet her later. And her foal too.” Adam said as we walked to the feed area of the barn. “Wanna give ‘em some treats?” He asked. “Sure.” I said, grabbing the bucket he held out to me.
“This is Lightning, the oldest horse of the bunch. He also gets special treatment. Mariah’s had him since she was sixteen.” “He’s gorgeous.” I said, holding the grain in my hands to his muzzle. He ate the grain quickly, the evidence stuck to his whiskers as he lifted his head to chew. “Next, we have ‘Missouri’s Lucky Touch,’ or Lucky, for short. He’s a handful. He’ll test ya all day long. He doesn’t care too much for being ridden, but he loves attention.” I patted Lucky on the nose, which irritated him as he was only trying to reach the feed in the bucket I was carrying. “His color is beautiful.” I noted. “Yeah, red is his color.” Adam replied, motioning toward the next stall. “Malikai is a barrel horse. I like him in particular because of his blue eye. He’s probably the youngest of the bunch, around 8 or 9 years old, but he never gives me any trouble.” Adam said, petting Malikai’s muzzle. “Malikai reached his head toward my pocket where I’d put the grain. I laughed at his cunning behavior. “Oh, do you think I have something for you?” I asked, giggling. I felt his lips try to grab my pocket. “Oh, here you go.” I said, pulling out the grain and feeding it to him. His blue eye caught me off guard. It was so light, opaque even. The lightest shade of blue I could ever imagine. “He’s absolutely stunning.” I told Adam. Just then, Adam grabbed me by the waste and, standing uncomfortably close to me, whispered in my ear, “No, you are absolutely stunning.” I stopped breathing. I felt my entire body light on fire as the cool breath following every word fell slightly against the skin of my neck, sending shivers down my spine. Before I even had time to think, his lips were against mine, ravenous and full of passion. My body went limp in his arms. I gave in to his kiss. I forgot where we were. The world was spinning around me. I became lost in the moment… ~Brittany~ “Hmm, yellow. No, white. Well, what do you think babe?” I asked Emmett, who was standing next to me, casual and bored. “Well, I don’t care, really. This is about you, mostly,” he replied, not being helpful at all. I let out a sigh. Why can’t I ever make up my mind? “Uh, I guess I’ll take the yellow roses.” I gave up. “Ahh, that’s a lovely choice. We will make sure that your bridesmaids have yellow gowns as well, for coordination,” claimed Marguerite, our wedding planner. At the bakery, I met up with Jill, a lady I’ve known since my high school years and my absolute favorite cook. “Brittany, darling!” she exclaimed, running up to wrap her arms around me. “So you must be Emmett,” she noted as she moved over to him to give him the same greeting, “I’ve heard so much about you.” “Hi there,” he replied, “Good things, I hope.” “Well of course. Brittany has said nothing but the best about you. I’m so glad she has finally found you,” Jill said. “If I may correct you, it is I who is glad to have found her.” At this, Jill admired Emmett’s words and led us over to our surprise. “Ta-Da!” Jill yelled as she motioned toward a spectacular cake on a white linen display table. “Oh my…” I muttered, “It’s too beautiful to eat, Jill!” The cake was layered and outlined with pink petals and frosting. It looked almost like a statue, porcelain and perfect. “Wow, Brittany was right, Jill, you have a talent beyond reason,” said Emmett with his charming smile. “Thank you, I hope it tastes as good as it looks,” responded Jill with a wink. “We got a lot accomplished today huh?” I asked Emmett when we got back to our house “Yes, we did, are you happy with all of your decisions? I know it’s hard on you,” he asked. “Yeah, it’s been difficult; but,” I was interrupted by the vibrating in my pocket. “Oops, hold on Emmett, somebody is calling me,” I said, hitting the call button on my phone. [B:] “Hello?”
Christina: (sobbing) “Oh…my……..God. You, Brittany, please….come help me.”
[B:] “Christina, what is wrong?”
[C:] “It’s….Nick. He’s been…in…(sobs)..an accident. His body….can’t be found.”
[B:] “Girl, I’m coming over. Hang tight.”
“I have to get to Christina’s ASAP,” I told Emmett as he gave me a quizzical glance. “Let’s get home quickly. I’ll probably end up staying with her tonight. It’s Nick. He’s been in some kind of accident,” I filled him in with the details before we arrived at the house, where I immediately got to packing my things and headed off to Christina’s.
“It…(sobs)…just..can’t be. He was my baby. My One. Why is this happening to me?” I asked Brittany, horrified and out of control. “Girl, for once, I am at a loss for words,” Brittany responded, taking me in her arms. She was trying to help me calm down. But I still recall the cop as I opened the door, his hat in his hand, staring at me with a look that will haunt me until I die. He had said “Ma’am, there’s been an accident. The boat your husband was on was thrashed around by the previous storm. Drake Fisher’s body has been recovered. As for your husband, ma’am, he has yet to be found. We are doing what we can. We have the Coast Guard helping us in our search. Please contact me if there is anything I can do. Is there someone you can call to come be with you?” That’s when I had called Brittany, with every word still fresh in my memory. “This is so surreal, Brittany. I’m mortified…(sobs)..what am I going to do? Oh my God, the baby. She’s not going to have a father.” I let out a wail and gushing tears fell down my hot cheeks. “Girl, don’t you dare give up on him. We don’t know that he isn’t still out there. He loves you and that baby growing inside you more than anything in this world. You are what’s on his mind, you are his will to survive. With that, I’m sure he’s out there somewhere, trying to find a way home,” Brittany said, trying to comfort me; but I had given up, what were the odds of his survival? Even smaller, what were the odds of them retrieving his body? Slim to none. In Brittany’s embrace, I fell asleep in tears, not ever wanting to wake up… ~Amber~
When we pulled apart, Adam and I just stared at each other for a long while. “I’m sorry. That just kind of..happened, “Adam apologized. “No, it’s okay,” I said in reply. Why do I have to sound so stupid? I asked myself before continuing, “I mean, I liked it.” “Amber! You could do better than that,” I scolded myself. “I’m sorry. I’m not saying anything right.” Oh, great. Now I’m just rambling. Adam smiled at me and took my hand, “Guess we gave the horses a show,” he said with a laugh. “Yeah, guess so,” I said, looking at all their heads popped out of their stalls, staring at us with perked ears. Adam introduced me to the rest of the geldings: Big Brown, Gullivar, and Pilgram, before we headed back toward the house for dinner… “That was amazing!” I exclaimed. “Why thank ya, darlin’. It’s my Maw’s ole’chili recipe,” replied Mariah, taking my bowl. “Oh, no I could do that,” I protested. “No, darlin’, you’re my guest. Why don’t you go see Adam? He usually runs off to sit on the front porch after dinner, ya know, ta let his food settle,” she recommended. “Okay,” I replied simply, heading out to the front porch. “Adam?” I asked, walking out the front door. Sure enough, there he was, sitting on the old wooden swing I’d seen earlier during the day. “Hey, Amber,” he replied, smiling at me, making me blush as I sat down next to him. “What are you doing out here?” I asked in his direction. “Just thinkin’”
“About what?”
He took a moment before answering, “About you.”
I blushed another ten shades of red before he saved me by speaking first, “About..that kiss.”
Again, I was speechless and he continued, turning his head to face my own, “Amber, I…”
“You, what?” I finally asked, tired of waiting on his answer.
“I haven’t felt this way about anyone in a long time…”
“Oh.” I replied, dumbly.
“Oh?” he inquired in a disappointed tone.
“Sorry, I’m not very good at this sort of thing,” I apologized, wanting to smack myself in the head.
“It’s okay, I’m not either,” he said, taking my hand in his.
“So tomorrow, we’ll get you on a horse.”
“Sure thing,” I agreed. And together we sat on the wooden swing, feeling the breeze and watching the stars up above in the dark blue sky…
The next morning…
“Alright, are you ready?” Adam asked me. “Yes. I think I am.” Next to him stood Gullivar, a horse as black as ebony, tacked with a saddle and blanket. “Yes, I’m ready,” I said, walking up to the horse and allowing Adam to give me a boost into the saddle. When I settled in to the worn leather, I looked up, sun blaring in my eyes, and took a deep breath. “I can do this.” I told myself. “Alright, are you ready? I’ll lead him around on the ground for a while, then you’re on your own, OK?” Adam instructed, directing the horse forward at a walk. “Okay, I think I got this Adam.” He looked up and smiled, “Yes, of course you do, Amber.”
Riding became exhilarating again. I eventually got so comfortable that I loped Gullivar around the arena, wind in my face. The pounding of his feet matched the rhythm of my own movement; we were in sync, in tune, and absolutely loving every stride. A smile grew wide across my face when I jumped into Adams arms after my ride, “Thank you so, so much, Adam!!” I screamed with joy. “I can’t believe I forgot how great it feels to be in that saddle!” I exclaimed, still smiling in his embrace. “You did great, just like I knew you would,” Adam replied, staring me in the eyes, close enough to kiss me. I wrapped my arms around his neck. “Adam, Amber, come inside for some lunch, y’all!!” yelled Mariah from the house. “Guess it’s time to get some grub. I’ll take Gullivar back to the barn so you can go eat,” Adam offered. “No, no, let me do it,” I insisted, taking the reins. “Gullivar, you did great today,” I remarked, taking off his saddle as he dozed into a lazy stance. Taking a brush from a bucket, I began to brush him. “So soft…” I said, marveling at his shiny coat. Talking to horses can be so meditating. I had forgotten how much I loved even the smell of horses. I sat down the brush and noticed that Gullivar began nibbling at his blanket on the rack near his stall. “Oh, you want your blanket?” I asked. I walked over to put it on him and then led him to his stall. “See you later, Gullivar,” I said, stroking his long face before heading toward the house. After lunch, Adam decided to show me their only mare, Mirage and her new foal, Phantom. “Wow, she’s beautiful!” Never had I ever seen such a beautiful mare and foal. “Yeah, but she’s feisty. She can have such an attitude sometimes,” said Adam. I laughed, “that’s women for you.” “Yeah, I guess so huh?” he asked, winking at me. Just then, Phantom came up to me and stuck his head through the fence. I rubbed his small muzzle. “Aww, he’s absolutely adorable,” I said. “Yeah, I think so too,” he said, looking at me… Deanndra
-on phone
“Oh my God, Brittany. When did this happen?” I had to practically scream over the crowd and the band performing before us. “I can’t believe it. How is Christina handling it?” I asked, already knowing the answer. “He is her everything. And with this baby coming, she’s more stressed than ever. I just can’t believe this has happened. I think she’s given up hope, but, for her sake, I can’t,” Brittany replied with a sigh. “Wow,” was the only word I could find to say. “Please, when she wakes up, tell her I love her and I hope to be home soon. This tour business is so crazy, Brittany.” “I bet, Dee. When will you be home? Have any ideas?” she asked. “No, not entirely sure. I hope it will be soon though. I need to be there for Christina. Does Amber know yet?” I asked. “No, she’s at Adam’s ranch a couple of hours from here. Nobody knows the number,” she replied. “Oh, wow. Well, good for her. I bet she needed that,” I said, “Well, please give Christina a hug for me. I miss y’all so. I need to go, though. We are about to go on.” “Okay, Dee. I hope to see you soon. I’ll call to let you know what’s up later on.” “Thanks Britt.”
“Deanndra?” asked Kyle, “You ready?” “Yeah, babe. I’m ready,” I replied, taking his hand in my own and walking on stage. The crowd went wild… ~Christina~
When I woke up, it all came flooding back to me. The overwhelming need to cry was succumbed by my lack of tears. “I have no more tears,” I said out loud, causing Brittany to jump, abruptly coming out of her own sleep. “No, go back to sleep, girl. I’m okay.” I felt my heart break at these words. “You are not okay,” I told myself, the lump of sorrow returning to my throat, nearly choking me. I subconsciously wrapped my arms around my tummy and said “I love you.” This baby is the one thing in my life that I have left of Nick. “I will always be with you. No matter what happens,” I replayed Nick’s words over and over in my head. “Yes, yes you will,” I said as my body found more tears to release down my cheeks…
~Amber~
Later that night…
“So…” I said, breaking the awkward silence. Adam had brought me to this pond after dinner. It was quite beautiful with the moon reflecting off the water and the fireflies hovering above the water lilies. “Amber, there’s something I want to tell you,” Adam began. I looked at him curiously. “It happened about seven years ago. I was madly in love with a girl named Robin. I had never felt so strongly about anyone before Robin, so I really thought it was something special. So, (I watched Adam as his face shifted to an expression of pain) we decided to have a baby together.
Lo and behold, a few months later, we found out we were expecting a baby girl. Robin and I were absolutely thrilled. We had our horses, we had our farm, and we had our baby. Well, one day…Robin decided to go for a ride on Lightening. It was just a slow ride, for relaxation. It was what she was born to do, riding horses that is, so it figures getting pregnant couldn’t even stop her. (Adam let out a little laugh at this, but I continued to watch his face) Anyway, well she went out alone, because she trusted Lightening with her life, which was a mistake; he is still an animal and so, naturally, he got very spooked when a deer jumped out in front of him from the brush in one of the pastures. Robin got thrown to the ground, hitting her head on a rock and getting stepped on by the horse in some places. She didn’t make it through surgery, and neither did the baby.” A small tear fell from his eye; I felt a lump rise to my throat, “You really didn’t have to tell me this. It’s so personal,” I said, touching his shoulder. “No, I needed to. I needed to tell someone. And I haven’t felt this way about a woman in such a long time Amber, the way I feel about you is inexplicable. I had to tell you. I wanted to,” Adam said, finally looking at me. I put my head on his shoulder and touched his hand with my own. “Adam, I have grown to like you a lot too. Thank you for all that you have done. And I am so, so very sorry about your family. That’s so tragic. It probably took a lot for you to still be around horses after that,” I said. “Yes, it was really hard. Especially forgiving Lightening; But I never held a grudge, I knew it wasn’t his fault. Like I said, he’s an animal,” Adam replied, shrugging his shoulders. “Yeah, I’m so very sorry.” “It’s okay, Amber. It was a long time ago. She would want me to be happy now. She was my life, but I have to move on,” Adam said, wrapping his arm around me and holding me against him under the pale moonlight. The next morning
“Darlin’, we are going to miss you so much. Thank ya for coming to see us,” Mariah said as she gave me a big squeeze. “Please come back soon. Ya take care of yourself. Adam, do you know when you’ll be coming home?” she asked. Adam smiled a heartwarming grin in my direction and took my hand, “I don’t know Ma. Nick should be back by now and I want to spend some more time with him and Amber too.” “Oh, alrighty then. I’ll be seein’ ya darlin’,” she said, kissing him on the cheek. Adam opened the door for me before getting in himself. Missy ran up to say goodbye, barking and whimpering sadly. I waved goodbye to her and Mariah before I felt the wheels reversing, the sound of gravel dispersing ringing in my ears.
~At Christina’s~
~Amber~
“What…?” I asked, feeling tears swelling in my eyes. “Are you serious, Brittany?”
“Amber, things have seriously changed here. She’s been handling it okay, but every couple of hours she breaks down.” I looked at Christina, lying on the couch, her head on Adam’s lap, his face a brilliant red, holding back tears like the rest of us. “I just…can’t believe this.” I said, choking on the lump in my throat. “This is so..oh my God. I just..” and then they started flowing, the tears surfing the round edges of my cheeks.... Credits. Thank you all for keeping up with "Of Love & Lust" I look forward to your comments. Tune in next week for Episode 5. Love, xtinabobina.
