The Carter Boys

The Carter Boys London (14) and Langston (15). They were the closest any two brothers could be Until they let a girl come between them. Lanngston and London had an eye for the same girl. Nikki Young. She was in the same grade as London. It was London who introduced them together. But he had no idea that his older brother was going to steal his girl. It was a bet. A bet for Nikki. London knew he had always beat his brother at a game of darts but this time Lanngston beat him. But London was not going to take this lying down. He had another plan. A new plan. He was going to show Nikki just who she was getting herself mixed up with. All of high school, Lanngston had been known as being a womanizer. He was a heartbreaker and he loved to chase girls around. London told his best friend Trista of his plans.
Trista: I don't know about this London.
London: Oh what do you know. I'm only thinking about Nikki. Someone needs to look out for her.
All the while, Nikki and Lanngston were getting closer. Their relationship was getting serious. Their mother Marissa would often invite her over for dinner. Marissa knew there was something different about this girl. It was the way her son acted when she was around. He wouldn't have dared to sing karaoke if it wasn't for her. And he enjoyed himself. At night he walked her home. They only lived a couple of blocks away. Each time taking a little longer to say goodbye.
Nikki: I can't stay out late this time. My dad was getting upset the last time we stayed out in the backyard.
Lanngston: But we were just chilling and talking.
Nikki: I know but I have to be IN the house at 10 not AROUND the house.
He looked into her eyes.
Lanngston: You're beautiful. And I was wondering . . . . . . I was wondering. . . . . if you'd be my girl.
Nikki: Your girl
Lanngston: Yeah. If we could go steady. You and me.
Nikki: I've been waiting for you to ask me.
He leaned in and kissed her softly on the lips. It was their first kiss. London: Going steady. Why Him? That's it. At first it was the dance and now they're going out.
London was growing jealous of his older brother. If only he had not introduced them that night. He had no time to waste.
Nikki: So why did you ask me over London? Is everything alright?
London: Nikki. We've known each other for a while now. And I just don't know how to say this. I like you. I really do. But it's time that I must warn you.
Nikki: Warn me. About what?
London: About my brother.
Nikki: I don't understand.
London: Nikki. You're knew to town so I thought it's only best that I warn you about my brother's ways. He's known around the school for being a flirt, womanizer, skirt chaser. He doesn't know how to say no. Right before you came he had already broken the hearts of many girls in school. I just don't want you to be another victim. I care about you. Nikki: A victim. I don't think so. Your brother and I are something different. He says . . .
London: You're beautiful. And I bet he read you some love poem from Cleopatra and Mark Antony. Gives you backrubs. Oh and he wants to take you on a weekend trip to visit our sister Leela. Believe me Nikki I'm only trying to save you from despair. I just don't want to see you hurt. I care about you too much.
London pulled out a little black book of girls names on it. Each name had a star rating on it.
Nikki looked down at the book. She was confused. London was telling the truth. He went on to describe the things Lanngston had told other girls. It was same things he told her.
Nikki: I can't believe it. I feel like a fool.
London: Don't beat yourself up. You had no idea. I just couldn't stand to see the hurt he was going to cause you.
Nikki: I thought I really meant something.
Nikki got up and hugged London.
Nikki: Well I'm glad I found out about this now before it was too late. I don't want to be like those other girls. Goodbye London. And thank you for everything.
London: It was my pleasure. Lanngston called Nikki later on that night.
Lanngston: Hey Nikki. I was wondering if you wanted to go with me to see my sister Nikki. Me and London go to visit her every month since he went away to college and--- Hello. . . . . . hello. . . . .
Lanngston tried calling her again but this time she didn't answer. For hours he stood next to the phone trying to call her but she didn't pick up. He couldn't understand what was going on.
Then she finally picked up the phone.
Lanngston: It's about time. What happened? What? Girls? What are you talking about? No London won't be home until tomorrow, what's going on? Black book? Who told you? Listen, you have to understand- Hello. . . . . . .hello. . . . . . . . LONDON!!!!!
As soon as London came in the door the next evening Lanngston was waiting for him.
Lanngston: Why? Why did you tell her?
London: What are you talking about?
Lanngston: Don't play dumb with me London. You know what I'm talking about.
London: Oh you mean why did I tell her about how you treat girls. How you like them for a few months and then on to the next hottie that comes your way.
Lanngston: You had no right telling her that.
London: I can't help it if you have a reputation. She needed to know what was going to be the outcome. Like most girls you used the same lines over again.
Lanngston: She's not just some girl London
London: You're right she's not. She special, and she doesn't need you messing her up.
Lanngston: You're just jealous. Jealous that she liked me more than she liked you. Face it little brother.
London: I was looking out for her. She doesn't need someone that's going to do her wrong the moment you find the next "new" girl in town.
Lanngston: You didn't even give me a chance. You didn't want me with her so you sabotaged it. I treated he better than any other girl because she IS better than any other girl.
London: It's not me you have to convince bro. I just told her who you are.
Lanngston: No you told her who I WAS. I liked her.
London: Whatever.
London walked away.
It had been weeks since Lanngston had talked to Nikki. She refused his phone calls and avoided him in school. Instead he made himself busy in his school and getting his car together. He had saved up money to buy him a used car. But instead opted to buy a fixer- upper. He wanted to fix it up and drive it to the school dance with Nikki on his side. He sat around in the livingroom.
Marissa: There you are. I've been looking for you. I just finished talking to your brother.
Lanngston: Thanks mom. But we're not talking.
Marissa: I can tell. Now what's all this about you and Nikki and London.
Lanngston went on to tell her.
Marissa: Poor Nikki.
Lanngston: Poor Nikki? What about me?
Marissa: What about you? All this happened to her. Because you and your brother refuse to settle things out the right way. If he would have told you how he felt about her would you have dated her.
Lanngston: No.
Marissa: And if you would have listened to your brother who was hurting because he felt betrayed by his big brother. He would have never acted out that way.
Marissa: Poor Nikki. She's stuck between the both of you. She doesn't know whether to believe you or your past. Your father was a ladies man. He loved chasing women and then he changed.
Lanngston: What changed him?
Marissa: He met a firey woman that wasn't gonig to take his stuff. And I married him.
Lanngston: So what do I do now. She won't even talk to me.
Marissa: First. You make right with your brother. Then you worry about her later. If she's as good as you say she is, she'll come around.
Marissa called to London.
Marissa: I'm going to leave you two in here to talk. You be the bigger one and talk to your little brother. Your father and I are tired of the silence between the two of you.
London came into the room. The two brothers barely looked at each other in the eyes.
London: So mom talked to you too.
Lanngston: Yeah. She thinks we need to talk.
London: Yeah. Well she told me the same thing.
They both began to talk at the same time.
Lanngston: Look I'm sorry for not thinking about you before I started talking to Nikki. I didn't know that you liked her like that.
London: I should have told you. I can't blame you for everything. It's just that, you've always gotten everything you wanted. And I was always second to you. Now even the girls picked you over me. In junior high I was the man and coming to high school means I'm Lanngston's little brother all over again.
Lanngston: Well I should have listened to you. I'm supposed the be the big brother and look out for you. I wasn't thinking about how you felt.
London: sorry
Lanngston: Yeah me too.
London: Bros
Lanngston: I never stopped.
London: So what are you going to do about Nikki?
Lanngston: I don't know. If it's meant to be. It will be.
It was time for the Turnaround dance.
Logan: It's about time you boys started acting like brothers again.
Marissa: Yes. Your father and I are both happy we got over that. So you two are going solo tonight. No dates.
Lanngston: Yeah. Just us two. Who knows. We may find some dates at the party.
London: Or maybe before.
Just then there was a knock at the door. And there was Nikki.
Nikki: You ready Lanngston?

Lanngston: Ready? But I thought -
Nikki: Your brother told me everything. I'm sorry I treated you so bad.
Lanngston: You're sorry. I'm sorry. I wasn't trying to-
Nikki placed her hand over his mouth.
Nikki: Let's not talk about that right now. Let's just have a good time tonight?
Lanngston: Thanks little brother.
London: Hey I figured the best man should have the best girl.
Voice: And what about you.
London looked behind him to see a girl standing in front of him. He tilted his head as he looked at her curiously. London: Trista? What happened to you?
Trista: Your mother said you needed a date. And I needed someone to take me to the dance. Is something wrong? You don't like it?
London: Oh no. You look. . . . . you look. . . beautiful. I didn't think dances were your thing.
Trista: Just because a girl likes to play basketball with the guys doesn't mean she can't dance. So how do I look?
He put his hand to his chin.
London: Could use a little more make up. (He said jokingly)
She smiled back at him.
Trista: So . . . will you escort me to the dance tonight.
London: I would be honored.
On and on the two couples talked. Logan: Alright. Now everyone pose for the camera. Trista and London. Nikki and Lanngston. Marissa: Now you four have a wonderful at the dance. And take plenty of pictures. Don't have the girls home late . .
Boys: Or their parents will flip.
She smiled and hugged them.
Logan: I don't know how we did it again Mari. But we did it. We got through another year of teenage drama.
Marissa: Only four more years to go. And I'm still waiting on Leela to bring me grandchildren.
Logan: Not on that again.
