Eva had moved out of her home with Evan and Isis to make something of her life. She worked at the corner bookstore. And when she wasn't working she was deep in her studies. She was determined to get her degree. Evan and Eva split the assets between the both of them. They both paid off their father's debts and when all was done, were able to do for themselves. Evan bought him a nice repair shop in town. Eva moved into a small home just 15 minutes away. It was a tiny flat, but it was hers. Life was coming together for Eva. She spent her free time in the town garden. It was quiet, peaceful and she was able to get her studies done. She often thought about herself in the past years. How much things have changed for her and how much she liked where she was. And when she wasn't by herself, she was with her family. She often spent time with Tina who was a great chess opponent. Pa had taught them both how to play the game.
Eva: You are far better than I was at your age.
Tina: Really?
Tina always enjoyed being with her aunt. But she always felt there was something missing in her aunt. She could see it in her eyes at times.
Tina walked into the living room as Evan was watching tv.
Tina: Dad, you got a minute.
Evan: Sure T. What's up?
Tina: Dad, what ever happened to uncle Carter?
Evan: Carter? Why you ask pumpkin?
Tina: Well we just stopped seeing him around. Just like that. What happened to him?
Evan: Well honey. Sometimes adults decide to no longer be friends again and that's what happened between Aunt Eva and Carter. They decided to go their separate ways.
Tina: But I thought they were going to get married? They were more than friends dad.
Evan: I know. It's hard to explain honey. Grown up things can be complicated and you're just too young.
Tina: I'm not that young. I'm almost 10.
Evan took a deep breath. He he knew that Tina was going to keep asking about it until he gave her a clear answer. He thought about the best way to explain it.
Evan: Deep down I think that it just wasn't the right time for them. That even though they may love each other, it just isn't meant for them to be together.
Evan: You understand?
Tina: Not really. But you're right dad. You grown ups are complicated.
Evan gave a small laugh. He patted his daughter on the head and walked out of the room.
Tina: Grown ups are so confusing. It's time to let the kid's take over.
She walked over the computer and began working.
Eva and Isis would often go out to eat lunch together.
Isis: I can't believe you're graduating in a few weeks. How does it feel?
Eva: Time well spent.
Isis: Well now that your life is taking a better turn. How about your personal life? When was the last time you talked to Carter?
Eva nearly choked.
Eva: I haven't been focused on my personal life lately.
Isis: Well you should. It's been a long time. Have you at least tried talking to him? To tell him why you left him.
Eva: It took me this long to finally tell you and Evan. I don't want to tell him. It's best that he just forget about me.
Isis: But Eva. You meant so much to him. You wasn't there to see the look on his face when we found out from Pa that you weren't coming. He wouldn't say it but I knew something was up. I knew you weren't going to just get up and go like that. No matter how you first came to us. I knew you were not like that. Eva: There is no way I can get up the guts to tell him. It's been so long. He may just spit in my face. I wouldn't blame him either. I just did what I thought was right. I didn't want to hurt him.
Isis: All the reason why you should tell him.
Eva: Forget it. It's best we just leave the past just that.
Eva tried to quickly change topics. Isis dropped the subject when she notice that Eva was not going to talk about it anymore. They continued their lunch and talked about other things in town. A few days later, a car pulled up to Eva's home. At first she didn't notice it. She pulled away the curtain and watched as the car stayed on the opposite side of the street. She couldn't see who was in the driver side so she just stared. Finally after a few more minutes of watching the car and seeing that no one was getting out, she walked outside to the porch.
She watched the person get out of their car and walk towards her.
She widened her eyes when she realized who it was. It was Carter. Eva couldn't believe it. She blinked twice just to make sure she wasn't imagining anything. She froze. She didn't know whether to run back in the house or just stand there. He stopped just at her driveway. Carter: Hello (his voice nervous)
Eva: Hi.
Carter: I didn't mean to just drop by. I was sitting in the car trying to think about what to say. It's been a long time.
Eva: It has
Carter walked closer to the steps
Carter: So how have you been?
Eva: Good.
There was a small silence between the two of them. Both were a obviously nervous. Eva could barely look at him.
Carter: You want to take a walk? Get some air or something?
Eva was hesitant, then she nodded.
They walked towards the lake just a few minutes from her home. There was silence between the both of them along the way. It was moments before she finally began to speak.
Eva: How did you find me?
Carter: Your niece. Tina called me and told me to come see you.
Eva: Tina (she smiled)
Eva: You know. I thought long and hard about what would happen if we saw each other again. What I would say. How I would react. But it wasn't until now that I am so lost for words. I don't know where to start. So I guess you can talk and I will answer.
Carter: Why'd you leave me Eva?
Eva: I had to Carter. I couldn't stay. I was no good for you. You needed better, you deserved better.
Carter: I wanted you Eva. I needed you. And you just left without a note or anything. I didn't know what I had done.
He walked closer to her.
Carter: I kept thinking...what did I do that made you stop loving me.
Eva: But I did love you Carter. That's why I had to leave.
There was a silence again between them.
Eva: I have to go. It was wrong for you to come here.
She walked quickly back home without saying another word.
As she walked up the steps, Carter touched her arm.
Carter: Wait. I didn't come all the way here for nothing Eva. I came to see you. I spent too much time thinking about you. I deserve more than just a few words and a goodbye.
Eva: What do you want from me? I told you. I am no good for you.
Carter: I want to know what happened between us? One moment we were getting married and the next I was looking all over town for you. Just tell me Eva.
Eva: FINE! You want me to tell you Carter. You want me to say it. I was using you. My family wanted to hook us up just so they could keep the money your dad sent them. Only I was not having it. I was going to take you for EVERYTHING. I was going to get back at them by hurting you. Only......
Carter: Only what?
She walked away from him. She tried holding back the tears. It had been so long and she thought she was over him. Thought that seeing him would not make a difference to her.
She turned back to look at him.
Eva: Only, I didn't plan to really love you. To really care about you. And when Pa threatened to ruin you I couldn't take it. I had to leave.
Carter: Why didn't you just come to me? We could have figured things out.
Eva: I wasn't thinking. At the time it seemed like the best thing to do. I had done so much wrong to people I just knew by leaving would have made things better.
Carter: Eva. I don't know what you were trying to do. But I felt the woman I met and fell in love with was the real you. She was real Eva. That you were not faking or pretending. Those nights that we spent together were real. Because I felt them in here. (He touched his heart)

Eva: Why are you so nice to me? Didn't you hear me say I was using you.
Carter: I heard you. I've had two years to think of the many reasons why you left. But I know that you didn't leave with my money.
Eva: I couldn't. I didn't want to hurt you. You treated me like I was someone special.
Carter: That's because you are Eva. And you are still special to me.
Eva: Stop.
Carter: It's true. I never stopped feeling for you. And seeing you just made those feelings come back all over again. I can't be mad at you.
Eva: I wish you would. It would make this all better.
Carter touched her face again.
Carter: No it wouldn't. Because it wouldn't be the truth. I've tried to go on with my life. But no matter what I just want to be with you Eva.
Eva: I don't know if there is room for an us Carter.
Carter: Well let's start small.
He looked into her eyes.
Carter: Hello, my name is Carter Anderson.
He stuck his hand out as if to greet her like the first time they met.
Eva: Eva Mitchem.
He smiled back at her.
Pastor: We are gathered here today to join this man and this woman in holy matrimony. Carter looked longing at Eva. She looked wonderful as she stood across from hm at the Pavilion. He listened as the Pastor spoke to the couple but kept his eyes on Eva, smiling every now and then during the ceremony.
Pastor: I know pronounce you husband and wife, you may kiss the bride.
Pastor: Again.
Evan held Isis to him once again. Holding her in his arms and kissing her softly.
Pastor: Ladies and gentleman. I present to you, the remarried couple of Evan and Isis Mitchem.
The crowd clapped as Evan and Isis had renewed their wedding vows after 15 years of marriage.
All the friends and family were there since their first wedding was at the courthouse.
Carter was asked to be Evan's best man and Eva the maid of honor.
Carter and Eva had become closer the past year. Carter lived two towns over but would often spent time in Berryville to be close to Eva. They danced to nearly every song at the reception. Evan: So when are you going to make a honest woman out of my sister?
Carter laughed.
Carter: I was trying to take things slow this time. Not rush into things.
Evan: Well don't give up on her.
Carter smiled back at Evan.
Carter: Don't worry. I won't. I never have.
He looked over Evan's shoulder and glanced over at Eva. She was busy talking to the other wedding goers.
She looked back at him and smiled as she was holding conversation with the circle of women at the party. The reception was ending, and Isis and Evan had already left for their honeymoon. Carter and Eva had stayed behind to make sure that everyone left and that things were being cleaned up. After wrapping up, they both sat on the grass and looked up at the sky. Carter looked over at Eva. She was calm and content and just a beautiful as the day he met her years before.
Carter: Marry me
Eva looked back at him.
Eva: What?
Carter: Marry me Eva.
Eva: You don't want to marry me Carter.
Carter: I tried to once before. I love you Eva.
Eva looked at him.
Carter: Be my wife Eva. 3 months later:

Pastor: Finally, I pronounce you husband and wife. Introducing Mr. and Mrs. Carter Anderson.
Eva looked longingly at Carter. She couldn't help but start to cry. But this time it was tears of joy.
Carter had found his wife and Eva had finally found happiness.
