Years later:
John couldn't believe it, as he stood there watching the sun go down. He thought long about his life: A few years ago he was on top of the world. He had everything he wanted but it was not enough. Because now the only thing he wanted was the love of Etta. But he was not going to give up on her. Not when he knew that she still cared about him.
She was going to marry another man soon. And he knew he had a choice. Either love her enough to let her go or stop her. Etta stood there watching the sunset. It looked pretty over the city right before the lights illuminated the sky.
She stood there thinking about her life over the years. She thought about Sam, her fiancee.
He came into her life at the right time...twice. And how much he cared about her. He truly loved her. She just was not sure if she loved him as much as she did. And there was John. Who after years of being apart was confessing his feelings to her. But could she put herself through the same thing, or had he truly changed. And if giving up his famed life would make things better between them. Sam: You look wonderful out here.
His voice startled her. She jumped.
Sam: Sorry. I didn't mean to scare you. I thought you would be here. Etta: I just was thinking.
Sam: I hope not getting cold feet. The wedding is a week away.
Etta: No. Just thinking.
She barely looked at him in his eyes. He hugged her.
Sam: You've been so tense lately. I guess all this wedding stuff is really stressing you.
That's why when it is all over, you and I will go on a long vacation . . . at least a week.
Etta: I think that is going to be great.
Sam: Just think, next week you will be Mrs. Sam Logan.
She forced a big smile on her face.
Etta: Yeah. Just think..... Etta was sitting at the table eating lunch when Jasmine entered the kitchen. She fixed herself a bowl and sat with her mother.
Etta: Oh. Jasmine, I am glad you woke up. I'm going to need you and your brother help with all the last minute preparations for the wedding.
Jasmine: Ok mommy.
She could hear the reluctance in her voice. Etta frowned. Etta: You know. Being my flower girl is the most important part of the wedding. You have to be very responsible with the flowers. You can't just throw them anywhere.
Jasmine: I know mommy. I went to other weddings. So I know what to do.
Etta frowned again.
Etta: Well after you eat get dressed and I'll go get your brother. I need everyone on deck for today. Only 6 days left. Only 6 days left. Blue was standing outside the library. He kept looking at his watch. He was 30 minutes early but was unsure of whether he should be fashionably early or late. It was almost 1 now and still no sign. Christina: Hey Blu.
He heard the voice from behind him. He turned around with a big grin.
It was Christina Logan. She was his science partner in lab and they had to begin their research. He had a crush on Christina since she came to school her freshman year.
Blu: Hey Christina
Christina: So are you ready to work? By the end of the evening, they had finished their research and set on their way back home. She gave him a hug goodbye that caught him off guard.
Christina: Thanks for the help Blu. See you at school tomorrow.
His phone rang. It was Etta.
Blu: On my way home mother. Etta woke up the next day as usual. She went to get the paper and began reading it as she sat at the kitchen table. Then, she saw it. Right on the front page was an article on John. It read:
J. San leaves for love.
The article talked about his music career and how he was officially retiring from the business. The writer asked John why he was leaving the music business. He replied:
For the love of her. There was somewhere along my time I lost something and the only way to get her back is to show her I am serious about us.
Etta refused to read anymore. And when Sam entered the room she quickly balled up the paper and threw it in the dispenser.
Etta and Sam chose to get married at their favorite location. She loved to watch the sun rise and set at Look Out Point. There was a good turnout of family and friends. She looked around at the crowd as she was escorted up the steps by Blu.
She looked over at her son and noticed that his face was stone. She shook off her concern and kept walking. The ceremony began and everyone was seated except Blu and Jasmine, who stood on both sides of Sam and Etta.
Reverend: Do you Sam take Etta to be your wife.....
Sam: I do. (he smiled) Reverend: Do you Etta take Sam to be your husband
Just as Etta was beginning to speak, she was caught in her words. She couldn't answer.
She began thinking about John.
Etta: Not now.
She told herself. But she began flashing back to him.
Sam: Etta? Etta. Sam: Etta. Are you ok?
Reverend: Do you Etta take Sam to be your husband?
John: Do you?
Sam looked over to see John standing in front of him.
Etta knew that voice.
Sam: John! What are you doing.?
John: I'm sorry Sam. But I can't let you do this. John: Etta. Please don't do this.
Etta: John. This is my wedding. You can't just walk in here and expect to just sweep me off my feet. Do you know how embarrassing this is.
John: I don't care.
Sam: Hello am I not standing here.
John walked Etta to the side.
Etta: You are ruining my wedding.
John: I can't watch you make this mistake.
Etta began to laugh.
Etta: Mistake? John, you are the one interrupting my wedding.
John: You don't love him. Etta: Oh. Then why and I standing here.
John: Because I was too dumb to realize that you mean everything to me years ago. Then it would not be you and him standing here.
Etta: John. I can't do this. It is not the time for you and I. John: I love you Etta. I always have. I just don't want you to make a mistake because of me. Because deep inside you know you still love me.
He looked at her face. She was taken back by his words. He had never said he loved her before.
John: Tell me you don't love me and I will leave. I will leave you alone and I won't bother you again. But if you do...then come with me.
( He held out his hand) Etta didn't say anything. She couldn't say anything. She looked him in his eyes. It was same familiar look she had seen years ago when they were together. He was sincere. But she knew what she had to do. She knew what was the right thing to do.
She took his hand and gave it a small squeeze. Then let it go. John watched as she walked past him and back to where Sam stood.
Sam: Are you okay?
She smiled again. The Reverend began again with the ceremony. John stood there for a few seconds and then walked off the point. He could feel the eyes of onlookers staring at him as he held his head down. Years later he stood alone watching the sun set. He thought about that day over in his head. Would he change anything? Would he have said something different?
DA-DA! DA-DA! He turned around to see the little girl walking towards him.
Violet: Da- da! Da-Da!
He knelt down to pick her up. He tossed her in the air and she giggled as he lifted her in the air. Etta: We missed the sun set.
John: It's okay. There will be more.
Etta: Someone spilled chocolate milk all over the back seat, so I had to stop to clean it up.
John: Mommy is always making a mess isn't she Violet?
Etta: Ha Ha daddy. What were you up to?
John: Nothing. Just thinking. Sam: Are you okay?
She smiled again. Then she frowned.
Etta: No. I'm not okay. Etta: Sam I can't do this. I can't marry you. I have to be honest to you and myself. I just don't love you like you love me.
Sam: But the wedding.
Etta: Sam, you are a good man. You are a wonderful man. But you're just not for me. Sam: Then it is him you love?
Etta nodded her head.
Sam: I thought you did. I just didn't want to believe it. He is one lucky man. She hugged him.
Etta: I am so sorry.
She kissed him on the cheek. She began jogging towards the end of the walkway.
Etta: JOHN! (she called to him) JOHN! WAIT!
John turned around. Without saying another word he picked her up in his arms.
John: I love you.
Etta: I love you too. Both Blu and Jasmine looked at each other and ran to John and Etta.
Etta and John began dating again for the better part of a year. Jasmine was now entering Junior High and was beginning to look a lot like her mother. Blu was in the school's band and was in his 3 year of high school. By their one year anniversary back together, John proposed to Etta in the park of their first date. She said yes. And I do. It didn't take long for the couple to expand their family more. Both siblings were so excited to welcome their new sister or brother. Even John was excited about being a father for the 3rd time.
John: You took your vitamins right
Etta: Already
John: And you've been staying off your feet....... Etta: Thinking about what?
John: How much I love you and our little family.
He held her hand and they walked into the house.
Their tale ends, but Blu will have it own story.

I have mixed feelings about this ending. I mean, it was fairly obvious that John and Ella were going to get together, but I'm having a hard time feeling happy about the way they did it. She knew she wasn't in love with Sam through the entirety of their relationship, but she couldn't be bothered to tell him before the wedding ceremony. Sheesh. I liked the story overall, though, it was a fun read.

This story was great! I'm glad that John and Etta ended up together, though I agree with Spladoum that Etta should have broke it off with Sam before the wedding. Great work, though!
