"Are you all packed?" Helena asked me as she made her way down the stairs.
I ignored her. I didn't even want to stand next to her, let alone talk to her. My thoughts were interrupted by a knock on the door.
"I'll get it," she sighed.
I heard someone yelling, and saw Kellie walking towards me, angrier than I've ever seen her.
"Oh em gee! How could you?" she yelled, as she stormed in front of me pouting like a child.
"You think I wanted this? I would love to be able to stay here with you and all of my other friends," I replied, my voice reaching the same pitch as hers.
"I'll leave you two to chat," Helena said as she took my things to the car. I hate how she's being so generous all of a sudden.
"What about tonight?" Kellie whispered, looking back to make sure Helena wasn't listening, "The party?"
"Oh f.. Helena ruins everything!"
"Maybe you can still come?" she said, showing signs of hope.
"Yeah, like Helena is going to tell my grandmother to let me go to a huge house party.." I scoffed and rolled my eyes.
"Who says she has to know? Come on! I've been waiting to go to this party since.. Forever?" I guess a week counts as 'forever' in her book.
"Sounds tempting... But with all of the paparazzi and photographers on every corner, she would know. You should just go on with out me."
"I can't! I'm your plus one. I'm not invited unless you go!"
I looked at her. It looked like she took a long time doing her makeup this morning, because her mascara was nearly dripping down her face. Her lips were pouted and she was trying to do an impression of a sad puppy.
"Ugh, fine! I'll do my best to make it," I caved.
"Yes yes yes yes yes!" she screamed, jumping up and down.
"Don't get your hopes up! I'll call you if I need any help."
"Anything!" she hugged me. "Do you know just how much I love you, Annie?" She hugged me again and left.
Helena walked back in. "Okay, looks like we're ready."
I walked out of the door and continued to ignore her. When we got in the car, I looked outside at what I was leaving behind. My beautiful home..
When we pulled up, I couldn't believe my eyes.
"You have got to be kidding me. You didn't tell me I was going to be staying in a dump!"
She got out of the car.
"It's not a dump, Anneliese. It's a farm," she said as it seemed like she reassured herself more than she reassured me.
"I can't tell the difference." I mumbled.
"Now you just stay here while I go talk to Momma."
"What? You actually tryst me not to drive off?"
"No. That's why I have the keys."
I grunted and tried to get comfortable again.
A woman with grey hair opened the door and stepped outside. I'm guessing that's my grandmother, since she's arguing with Helena. I wonder what they're yelling about... Three minutes and a bunch of clear profanities later, Helena came running over.
"Anneliese, sweetheart, your Grandmomma wants to meet you," she smiled.
"So," I replied, playing with my nails.
"So, get out of that car. NOW!"
I got out of the car, but I didn't walk with her.
"What are you doing?" she turned around and saw me resting on the car.
"I'm not going up there."
"Anneliese!"
"Helena! You are out of your darn mind if you think I'm going to go up there, let alone stay here for Lord knows how long." I crossed my arms. "Nope. I'm staying right here."
The grey haired woman looked tired and started marching her way over here. Yep, definitely my mothers mother.
"Momma, be nice," Helena said.
"So you're the little ungrateful child your Momma just told me about."
"Excuse me?" I said, surprised. Just who does she think she is talking to me like that?
"I wasn't done speaking yet. Never interrupt me. Your Momma says you're gonna stay here for a little while."
I nodded, since I didn't really want to talk to her.
"Well, there's no room. Sorry." she said.
"What? Wait, Momma. What about my old room?" Helena asked.
"Occupied." Helena's face twitched a bit.
"Okay, how about the attic? That thing is never occupied."
The old woman thought for a second. "Fine. But you're going to have to clean it. It'll probably take a while, so you might want to get started."
"No thanks. I'll pass," I said with a smile.
"Anneliese! You will do whatever she asks you to do, got it?"
I scratched my head. "Hmm, let me think.... No."
"I have no problem not taking you in, Child."
"Good. Because I'm not staying."
"Momma, could you give us a second?" The woman looked at both of us shook her head and walked back to her house.
"Look, if you don't do this, you're done. Career wise. So you seriously think that I don't have the connections with people in your business?" No, I knew exactly how I became a star. "I started your career and I can sure as well end it."
"You wouldn't."
"Oh, I would," she laughed for a second, then her face went to normal again, "it's just for a little while. You'll enjoy it." she walked back over to the drivers car door.
"I hate you!" I screamed one last time.
"Tell me something I don't know." As she drove off, she yelled "Good luck!"
I have a feeling that she yelled that to my Grandmother, not me.
I looked over at her. She didn't even crack a smile. I think she might be incapable of it.
