Carter knelt down on his knees and asked Eva to marry him. She was speechless for a minute. Words could not come out of her mouth. She just stood there staring.
Eva: I don't know what to say.
Carter: I was hoping you'd say yes.
Eva: I don't know what to say.
Carter: I was hoping you'd say yes.
Eva: yes...Yes! After placing the ring on her finger they hugged and kissed.
Eva: Do you really want to marry me?
Carter: More than anything.
He smiled at her and they embraced again. Jack: They did what?
Isis: They're getting married Papa!
Jack: No, no this cannot happen. It's gone too far.
Isis: You should be happy for them. She is settling down. And with someone like Carter. Jack: That no good child is only after one thing. His money. She's just going to drain him dry. I knew I should have never picked her up. I should have never let you all convince me that she would be good for him. We were all greedy, now look what mess has been made. Evan: But she has been good Pa. I think Carter has been good for her. I couldn't see it before but I really believe she cares about him.
Jack: Sure you do. She's learned a lot from being away from home. She's a trickster and is no good. I TOLD ALL OF YOU!
Isis: But Papa. Please listen. She has changed. She really has.
Jack: NO SHE DOESN'T. She is selfish and doesn't care about anyone else but herself. If she has changed, she has only gotten worse. And we are just as bad for bringing her here. Now she's going to use the poor boy. Jack: I will fix this. I will make things better for all of us.
Evan: Dad, what are you talking about?
Jack: Don't you worry. Everything will be better.
Meanwhile, Eva and Carter had taken a small vacation. With the news of the wedding getting around town, they were constantly the center of attention in tiny Berryville.
He took her camping to a Hollanse, a big country town hours away from home. There the two of them talked about the wedding and was able to make plans without the input of others.
Eva: Two weeks. Why so soon?
Carter: Why wait long? I want you to be my wife. So why should we wait if we know what's in our hearts? While in the old town, they went shopping for items to decorate their home. Carter's place was a nice starter home for the couple and so it was agreed that the two of them would live there for a little while.
Carter: At least until I can save for a bigger home. Once back home, the family began helping with wedding preparations. Isis and Eva would go to the boutiques to pick out wedding items while Carter and Evan picked out the bigger things like location, and picking up all the items Eva wanted.
While sitting at the dress shop, Isis looked over to Eva who was looking more nervous than usual.
Isis: Penny for your thoughts Eva: Nothing. It's just I'm getting married in 10 days. Who would have thought?
Isis: I would have.
Eva: How did you know my brother was the one? That you wanted to spend your life with him.
Isis: Actually I did not know. I didn't like him at first. Isis: But it was the warmth in his eyes, the way he said my name, he was special to me. And he made me feel like I was the only other person in the room. When he touched me, I felt good all over. Why you asked?
Eva: Just curious.
Shop owner: Ladies we are ready for your appointment. The two of them walked into the room.
Eva: Isis? I wanted to thank you. I know I may not have said it much, but I do appreciate the time you spent with me. I can see why my brother loves you so much.
Isis: He loves you too you know.
Eva: I know, but sometimes I'm not an easy person to love. Eva: I've had some rough years being on my own. And so it made it hard for me to be nice to others. And I don't think I have been so nice to you. I just wanted to say thank you. For everything. Isis: You are such a wonderful person Eva. And Carter loves you so much. Money, no money, I am so happy you agreed to come back home. You deserve to be here. You needed to be there. The two ladies embraced.
Store owner: This way ladies. After trying on a dozen dresses Eva looked back into the mirror. She began to cry as she looked into the mirror of herself.
Eva: This is it. This is the one. Eva stood on the gazebo looking out on the town. It was the same gazebo her parents had married.
Carter: You like it?
Carter: I booked it for our wedding. I thought you would like it. Eva turned to Carter and wrapped her arms around him. He almost got off balance with her embrace.
Eva: I want to marry you.
Carter: I'm glad....but I thought we got over that hurdle a week ago.
Eva: We did. I just wanted to say it again.
He held her hand and led her to the rest of the area to talk about the wedding. The day before the wedding, Jack was determined to stop the wedding. He got into his car and drove around town. He pulled up to the small building.
Jack: Carter, I'm doing this for your own good. Eva stood looking out the window. It was her wedding day. She was so nervous as she stood looking out into Berryville? If you would have told her months ago that she would be getting married she would laughed. If you would have told her months ago that she would be back home in her parents house she would have laughed harder.
Eva: You have come a long way Eva. 4'o clock. She sat in her chair waiting. She had looked over herself over and over again. Every few minutes she would get back up and walk the bedroom. Then the door opened. Isis: Look how wonderful you are.
Eva: I'm so nervous I don't know what to do. I couldn't decide on which earring to wear. Or the jewelry pieces.
She pointed to the different pieces all bought by Carter. Isis grabbed her hands.
Isis: It's okay. It's okay to be nervous. But don't worry. You are so beautiful today. Just be calm.
There was a knock on the door. And then Evan peeked in the door.
Evan: Is it okay to come in? Isis went over to Evan and gently kissed on the side of his face before leaving the room.
Evan gave a small cough as he was about to speak.
Evan: You look so...so..
Eva: Beautiful? That seems to be the only word anyone can say today.
She let out a nervous smile. Eva: Is Papa coming?
Evan: I'm afraid not.
Eva: Still stuck in his ways.
Evan: Don't worry about him. He will come around. I got you something. He went back to the door and brought a box his sister.
Evan: An early wedding gift. I thought you would like it.
Eva: What is it?
Evan: Open it. It was their mother's blue handkerchief.
Evan: Remember we bought it for her when we were little. It was the only thing we could get for $10.
Eva: But she kept it with her all the time. Tucked in her purse.
She rubbed the material between her fingers. Going over her mother's initials with her thumb. Evan: I know I haven't been the best brother to you. But I just wanted to say that you mean a lot to me. I'm sorry I didn't give you the proper welcome you deserved and at times I sided with Pa. But my wife had always seen the change in you. It's sad that it took so long for me to do the same. I love you sissy. Eva gave Evan a big hug. She couldn't remember the last time he told her that. But it was what she needed.
Eva: I love you too E.
Evan: Let me get back downstairs and help the rest pack the truck. You'd think my wife would be getting married the way she is carrying on. You picked the best matron of honor. Evan left the room, leaving Eva to herself again. She looked out the window as she saw of few of the family friends piling wedding items into the truck. She looked back at herself in the mirror.
Eva: This is your day. Everything will be fine. Jack was grunting as he passed by the wedding helpers who were rushing past him.
He grumbled as he walked through the crowd of people. He was just about to walk up the stairs when he saw Eva. She was in her wedding dress. He was mesmerized as he watched her. It was as if she was floating down the steps.
Jack felt a warm feeling come to him. He fought back the urge to smile at her but she could see it in his eyes. Eva: Hi Papa. I was hoping to see you before the wedding. I wish you would reconsider at least coming to the wedding. You don't have to walk me if you don't want. I just would really want you there. Carter's family is going to be there. Jack: I can't. There is no way I am condoning this catastrophe. This mockery of love. I said it before and I say it again. You're no good. And he is too good for you. I should have found him someone else. Someone pure. There is nothing pure about you Eva. Not anymore. Eva hung her head at his harsh words.
Eva: I don't understand you. First you ask me back here just to treat me like dirt. To bad mouth me and make me feel less of a person. You would have never treated me like this if momma was around.
Jack: How dare you speak about you mother! Your mother was saint, she loved everyone and they loved her. She was pure, through and through. Carter is to good for you. He deserves better. That's why I fixed it. I am showing him the way.
Eva: What? What are you talking about. Jack: I went to his boss. Told Dr. Fields about Dr. Anderson's new wife and her checkered past. Talked about how the her reputation could ruin the practice. People in the this town flock to gossip and the last thing they want is someone with your kind of past. Look's like he's going to have to find somewhere else to work. Eva: You didn't!
Jack: I did! He needs to know he can do better. And if being with you is what he wants then he can do it somewhere else. Not to have you parading around when we know you're a fake.
Eva grew angry. Eva: You're just a mean old man. If you're not happy, then no one can be happy. Why? Why ruin his life? Why mess him up if it is me that you want? Why not come at me? You had to mess with his hopes, his dreams. You're so cold. I don't know why I have been trying all this time. Jack : No one told you to try. No one asked you to try. If it wasn't for Tina, I would have never asked you back here. Not to make a fool out of my family.
Eva: This is my family too
Jack: Not since you left here years ago. Eva: I left because I didn't want to be here. I wanted to make something of my life.
Jack: Well you sure have. Now look at you. Dirt in a white dress.
Eva: You're so MEAN! You're a drunk who can't keep his house together. You keep Evan here to take care of you because you can't be alone. You don't deserve anyone. Not even Momma! Jack slapped her right as the words came out of her mouth. She covered her face. A feeling of shock and fear came to his face. He didn't mean to hit her. He didn't want to. But he was too stubborn to apologize. He reached for her but she moved back.
Eva: You want me gone. Fine! If that will keep you away from Carter and his future.....then you win Papa. I'm leaving and I'm never coming back. Just promise me one thing. That you will leave Carter alone and take back what you said to Dr. Fields. She pushed past him and ran to the front door, slamming it as she ran out. He shut his eyes and held his chest. He felt a sharp pain.
