Hello! Welcome to chapter 4, part 2, of Before the Aftermath! I hope you enjoy the story! Hannah x After the lesson had ended, she sat outside, just thinking. That teacher thought she couldn't do anything, she read it in his thoughts. Though read wasn't the right word. She... saw? felt? it. Yes, it was true, she could mind read... but everyone could do that, couldn't they? She had never questioned it before, to her it was like thinking. But it did have one drawback. She couldn't control it. It just happened occasionally. But everyone could do it. It was normal, just like her...

... She felt dizzy... why did she feel so dizzy? What was happening. There was slight warping in the world... she shut her eyes...
... And opened them again. Where was she? She was outside the house. In front of it. How did she move? Who were these people? Why did her neck feel cold? Then she realised. Her hair was tied up and in ringlets. Ringlets? She was wearing a strange nightdress, kind of old fashioned...
"H-h-h-hello?" She couldn't get the word out. Her throat felt dry. They just ignored her.
That made her angry. She was never angry. It was strange and it scared her and yet she still felt angry.
"Listen to me!" The words poured out of her mouth unbidden. They all turned around and spotted her. They looked so scared. She tried to speak, to apologize, to ask where she was, but she couldn't move her mouth, no matter how hard she tried.
"Oh, Elizabeth, I'm so sorry, please, what can we do to make up for it?" Elizabeth? Now, that wasn't her name. They must be getting her mixed up with someone else.
She forced the words out, fighting against the invisible block that stopped her speech. Every syllable she spoke felt like she had screamed a thousand words.
"I'm Bethany. I don't know any Elizabeth."
"Oh, Elizabeth, stop messing about! Oh, um, sorry, it was a joke... hahaha... ha... ha..." The unfamiliar man broke off nervously, as if scared to tell her off. Then her legs started moving. What? How was this happening?
"Bethany! Oh gosh! Beth! Beth, darling! Wake up..." A voice broke into her confusion. She wanted to look around, to see what was happening, who the frantic voice belonged to, for they knew who she really was. But the voice faded again.
"Oh, Elizabeth, please let us help you, please!" They shouted, eager to help, yet scared at the same time.
"BETHANY!" It was the voice again. Whose voice was that? Hang on, that was her mother's voice!
It faded yet again, though she strained to hear it.
"BETHANY! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, WAKE UP!!!" This time it was louder, breaking through all barriers.
"MUM!" She screamed, the word coming out of her mouth as well as in her thoughts. The dizzy feeling started again... she felt herself falling... falling... falling...
"Ouch!" The pain came to her first, the pain you get when you fall down stairs onto concrete... which is what she did. Then came her mother's arms around her, the coldness of the concrete and the relief that she could talk again.
Then... "Why am I wearing a dress?"
"You had it on when I came out to find you. You gave me a fright and a half, I can tell you that! What happened, Beth, darling?"
So Bethany told of being Elizabeth, and of being over there, and not over here and not needing to wear glasses over there.
"Oh, honey, I think you must have fainted and had a bad dream."
"It's true!"
"Sure..." She didn't believe it. "She must be in her little make believe world again, I know she does that..." her mother thought... and she heard.
"I heard that, you know, about being in a make believe world. I don't do that!" She added 'much' in her head.
"Um... darling... can you read my mind?"
"Sure, can't everybody?"
"... No..."
"That Bethany girl was very strange," Elizabeth thought. "As if she didn't know about..." No... she mustn't even think it. Who knows if she's listening or not? "But still," She continued to think, "What if she didn't know about it..." Elizabeth had known about it since she was old enough to understand. That didn't mean she liked it. In fact, she wished it would just go away, but... it was who she was, and though she hated it, she couldn't wish away a part of herself. The End (of part 4!).
