Aj spent all night driving around town looking for Sophia. She would have to be gone for 48hours before she is considered missing with the police. He had checked with all her friends, parks, mall, and favorite hang out spots.
She was no where to be found. He was growing worried with every minute.
He returned to the house. Brooklyn, met him at the door and when he saw Sophia was not with him, she ran to his arms crying.
Brooklyn: I called everyone I knew and no one has seen her.
Aj: Don't worry, I know she will come home.
He was telling this more to himself than to her.
Brooklyn: She was right. We should have told her a long time ago. I was just scared. Before you came back I was scared that you would not accept her as yours. And then when you were back, I was scared that she would not want to be with us anymore, that she would not love Travis as much. I was a fool. Aj: I doesn't matter now. We have to make things right. We messed up and now it is time we own up to our mistakes. We just need to find her.
Brooklyn: She hates me.
Aj held her again.
Aj: It is going to be alright.
Brooklyn had been up all night, and Aj made her lay down to rest.
Aj: I will stay up and wait for her. In case she comes home.
Brooklyn agreed but refused to go to her room to sleep. Instead she slept on the couch.
Aj stayed up, although he kept nodding in and out. He kept looking at his watch, looking as time went past. He quietly paced back and forth in the living room. He was worried that Sophia was lost somewhere or worse.
Aj: This is my fault. I should have just let things be.
It was morning and both Aj and Brooklyn were in the kitchen drinking coffee when the front door opened.
Brooklyn was the first to run to the room where she laid eyes on Sophia. Sophia looked at her mother and then began to walk to her room.
Brooklyn: Sophita
Sophia: Mom, please! I can't handle this right now. I just want to be left alone. I am sorry for making you worry about me, sorry I didn't call and tell you where I was. But I couldn't stay here.
Brooklyn: I am just happy you are okay. And worried about where you were.
Sophia: I stayed at Lauren's house. She told me you were looking for me. Her parents were gone for the weekend. I just needed time to think and being here was not going to help.
Brooklyn: We need to talk. You have to listen to us.
Sophia reluctantly went to the kitchen where Aj was sitting. She sat across from them both. She took a deep breath as she sat there in silence at first.
Sophia: I am listening.
Brooklyn then took her own breath. She had been going over this talk in her head and now it was time to explain.
Sophia listened as Brooklyn told her everything. She told Sophia when Brooklyn found out she was pregnant after Aj left. And how Travis claimed the baby was his to protect her from her grandfather.
Brooklyn: But somehow through it all, we fell in love. We began a family.
Aj admitted his own guilt for being too busy with making it big to check on them back home and missing his chance to be a father to her.
Aj: I didn't find out until I came the first time. But we didn't want to tell you. By then you knew Travis and we thought the truth would hurt you more than anything. You were so young.
Aj: We all loved you too much to hurt you. And as long as you were happy we were happy. But soon the truth was tugging at me and I wanted to be more than just your friend that came to visit. I WANTED to be your father.
He paused to look at her. To see what she was thinking.
After they were done explaining there was another silence between the three of them. Sophia's expression was blank. She wasn't crying, she wasn't angry. It was as if they had been talking to a wall the entire time. She excused herself and went to her room.
Brooklyn tried to speak but Aj held her arm.
The young girl just laid on her bed and stared at the wall. Thoughts of times when she was younger went through her head. Those moments when she met Aj and how he treated her. The moments she shared with both of them.
Meanwhile, the minutes went into hours and she still had not come out of her room.
Brooklyn: She hates me Aj. I should have done more, I should have been better.
Aj: She loves you. She just needs time.
And time is what it took. It wasn't until later that afternoon that Sophia finally left her room. By this time everyone had refreshed from the long night and she looked ready to talk to her mother.
Brooklyn had been sitting in the living watching tv and when she finally heard Sophia leave her room she rose up from the couch.
At first Sophia walked past her but then turned to her mother.
Sophia: I have spent a great deal in my room thinking. Thoughts of all those times I spent with both Aj and Travis. How much I could not find myself in his face and realizing how well I fit with Aj. And yet dad still loved me.
Brooklyn: Your dad will always love you. Please don't hate him because of this.
Sophia: I don't mother. No matter how much I sat in my room, in the end, I couldn't hate anyone. You did what you thought was right. What was best for me.
Brooklyn: Exactly. I am not saying it was the best idea but-
Sophia: I want to live with Aj.
Brooklyn: What? Sophia if you are upset then we can talk about this.
Sophia: I am not upset mother. But I thought about what you and Aj were talking about when I walked in and he is right.
Brooklyn: But this is your home
Sophia: And it always will be. But living here is hurting too much, for the both of us. I want to get to know Aj, I want to spend time with him, find out about him. I am not doing this to hurt you mother. I'm doing what is best for me.
Brooklyn looked at her daughter. There was a sincerity in her eyes and a determination in her voice.
That night after dinner they called Aj to the home and explained the news. He was a little hesitant to respond. Aj: If you would have asked me a week ago I would have been excited at the news. But now I am just a little shocked that you want to come live with me. How is your mother taking this? Is she alright?
Sophia: Well, as I can see. But like I told her, I am not doing this to hurt anyone. If you truly want to be a father to me then what more than to spend time with you. To live with you. I only have 4 years left until I am off to college and by then what time will there be. Aj looked down, again hesitant yet happy at the same time. He was getting his chance.
He paced back and forth for a little while, trying to figure out what to do next. He sat back down next to her.
Aj: Okay. Let's plan.
The big city of Starry Shores was like no other. The streets were big and there were so many stores. This town was so much bigger than where they from. Sophia stared out the window the entire limo ride taking pictures as they drove past the buildings.
The the limo finally stopped, the driver opened the door and let both mother and daughter out. Sophia's mouth dropped as she looked at the big white house in front of her. Brooklyn tried to look unimpressed but she too was taken back by the size of the house.
Sophia: Mom, you can fit my school inside of here.
Brooklyn: Not the whole school.
It only took moments for the front door to open and out greeted Aj.
Aj: Welcome. Sorry I couldn't meet you at the airport, my meeting was running behind. I hope the drive was alright.
Sophia: Is all this yours?
Aj: It is. And yours.
Brooklyn: Aj. I really don't want for us to be a burden for you in your own home. I know Brooklyn and I can find a place in town or closer that you can still spend time with her.
Aj: Nonsense. We talked about this Brooke. I want to more apart of Sophia, and if she wants to live with me then so be it. Besides this how is too big to not fill it. Come inside.
After placing their things in the rooms, Aj gave them a tour of the house.
Brooklyn: Everything is so, clean.
Aj: Well I have help cleaning it. Besides, I haven't been living in it for a while myself. With traveling back and forth between shows and seeing you two I barely had time to live in it.
He also showed them the top floor. His favorite place in the house.
Aj: This gives me a place to think while playing. I sometimes will come up here, stare out at the view and start writing songs. It's part of where I get my inspiration.
Sophia: What's the other part.
Aj: Life experiences.
During dinner it was fairly quiet at first. The girls had washed up from the long flight and were enjoying a nice meal.
Sophia: This is good Aj.
Aj: You can thank these fingers, quickest take out dialer in the west.
Everyone laughed.
They talked about the kinds of schools in town and all the things she could do in Starlight as she back home.
Aj: I know how much you love riding, so I was thinking we could go to the equestrian farm tomorrow.
Sophia: That sounds terrific.
The evening went on with the three of them talking about the latest gossip in town. Aj told them about his the celebrities that live close by and how many of them get together just to play poker.
Brooklyn tried to not seem impress but she and Sophia both hung onto every word. And when he told jokes about their many celebrity antics, she laughed harder than Sophia.
Sophia looked at both her parents as they talked back and forth to each other. She remembered the way her mother looked at Aj while at the lake that night, it was the same look she had now.
Sophia: It's getting late. I'm going to get to bed so that I can check out the horse farm.
She hugged her mother goodnight and went upstairs.
There was a small silence between them both.
Aj: Look Brooklyn, I know this was not the ideal solution and I truly feel bad that I've caused all of this. I just wanted to spend time with her. I know it maybe hard to understand.
Brooklyn: I understand...
Aj: There has always been something missing and when I look at Sophia I....what did you say?
Brooklyn: I said I understand. It took a while, at first I hated you. But I couldn't stay upset. You just wanted to be part of her. And I was being a little selfish.
Aj: Never.
Brooklyn: I was. And we should not have kept the truth from her this long. You have every right to be with her as I do.
Aj held her hand.
Brooklyn: It's getting late.
Sophia stood at the steps and rolled her eyes. She had been listening the entire time.
Sophia: Parents...
She walked the rest of the steps to her room.
