Firstly, I'd like to take the time to thank everyone who read or commented on the first part of this story! I'm so glad you're liking it! ... Anyway, here's part two- and don't forgetto visit my profile! "That's it?!" James asked, excitement turning his voice into a shrill scream.
I nodded and crossed my arms, staring up into the creature's eyes. The giant dinosaur sculpture towered over us, leaving us to bask in it's shadow. A thousand memories floated to the surface of my mind, and I flashed through them all. Joy, sadness and all kinds of mixed emotions ran through me and I marvelled at the ability of a statue to evoke these feelings.
I reached for the child's shoulder beside me and gestured to a bench a small distance away. "Let's sit down," I said, "and I can tell you the rest of the story." James nodded. He took one last glance at the dinosaur before following me. Cautiously, he sat down and peered into my eyes. "Grandpa?" He whispered. "Is Mummy ever coming back?"
I looked at his watering eyes and sadness filled my chest.
What do you say to a child that won't hurt them? "How about the story, then?" I said, quickly changing the subject. I couldn't bear to see anymore of his tears. James nodded slowly, and I cast back to where we let off.
"That last night was the hardest. We had become so attached to the land. We never wanted to leave." "We found a few whole skeletons, which is very rare," I added. "We also found a few random bones. They didn't belong to any dinosaur that we knew of. We investigated the possibility that they were a new species, but they were scattered all over the place, and the information didn't fit. It was almost like an impossible jigsaw." "That last night, we sat around the campfire discussing the bones. We went through every theory, every idea but nothing seemed right. Finally we settled on the fact that they would need to be tested," I explained. James nodded, as curiosity took over his emotions, and a clear smile formed on his face. The sight of this filled me with joy. I hadn't seen him smile in days. "Knowledge is a curious thing," I said cryptically. "Sometimes the desire to acquire it can drive a person mad. Yet other times, it's more burden then anything else."
James looked at his shoes. He may have been young, but he understood the statement perfectly.
"In this case," I continued, "the desire to know burned with such passion, we were almost blind to it's effect." James stared at the feet of people passing by. I watched him curiously for a few minutes.
"We argued about it. All the time! What had once begun as a group of friends and co-workers looking for keys to the past had now turned into enemies, with obscured opinions, pushing their versions of truth onto one another. There was so much debate over the matter, that we rarely spoke of anything else."
 "What happened?" James asked.
I shook my head. "Nobody trusted anyone. It was as if we were separated by high stone walls, impenetrable to every force. At last we found something. Heading up the trail, I hooked my toe on a rock. The blow left me winded, and I was on the ground for a few minutes. I scrambled to my feet and dusted my hands on my over-alls. My father glanced over his shoulder to check I was following. He stopped in his tracks when he saw me. It turned out he'd seen something. He bent down to the ground by my feet, dug around a bit and pulled a skull from the ground." I looked at James. He was staring off to the distance again. I sighed and decided it was not the best time for stories. I stood and offered him my hand. "Let's go home," I said. "I'm sure Grandma has baked something really yummy!"
