But the birds had eaten up every crumb and there was not one left to show them the way home. Still they wandered on and on, all that night, but they only seemed to get deeper and deeper into the forest. They had nothing to eat and they were getting hungrier as the time was passing by. When it was mid-day of the next day, they reached a little house in the middle of the forest. When they approached the little house they saw that it was built of gingerbread, cream and tiles of chocolate. The roof was made of chocolate too and the windows were of clear sugar. There were different types of candy decorating the house. "We will set to work on that," said Hansel, "and have a good meal. I will eat this cake, and you Gretel, can eat that one which is next to the window, it will taste sweet." The children were eating very delightfully. Meanwhile, an old woman was watching them. She was de owner of the little house. The old woman came to them and when the children saw her, they felt frightened and tried to apologize for their bad behaviour and for the fact of having eaten some pieces of her house decoration. She said softly: "Oh, you dear children, don't worry about that, but who has brought you here? Do come in, and stay with me. No harm shall happen to you." She led them into her little house. It was a warm and a lovely place. Afterwards two pretty little beds were covered with clean
sheets and blankets, and Hansel and Gretel lay down in them, and thought they were in heaven. They soon fell asleep because they were too tired.
The old woman had only pretended to be so kind; she was in reality a wicked witch, who lay in wait for children, and had only built the little house of gingerbread in order to entice lost children there. When a child fell into her power, she killed it, cooked and ate it, and that was a feast day with her.
Early in the morning before the children were awake, she was already up, and when she saw both of them sleeping and looking so pretty, with their plump and rosy cheeks, she muttered to herself: "That will be a dainty mouthfull"
She screamed at loud in order to wake up Hansel.
Suddenly, the two children woke up shocked by her terrifying screams. The children didn't know what was happening, but the witch were looking at them in a very frightening way.
