Hello there, and welcome to my first story ever on here.
It's only the prologue, so it's rather short.
The cover is pretty boring, but I still quite like it. =]
This story (the future parts in particular) contains violence, gore and some swearing, that I've recently tried to clean up, because the story got rejected D=. It's not my fault, my first person narrator just happens to be foul-mouthed like that, it's in his nature. He also uses the Lord's name in vain a lot, so I'm sorry if anyone is offended by that.
I'm not a very big fan of those useless playlists other writers so often have at the beginning of their stories, but in case you really care; while writing this I had the three songs Trophy Kill, Memento Mori and Born Dead; Buried Alive (all by The Agonist) on constant repeat.

Through several openings in the web of leaves overhead the setting sun's orange rays of light found their way down to the forest floor where they touched my skin. A soft breeze that wove around the trees swayed the lilac flowers surrounding me. This movement filled the air with a pleasant, sweet scent, but the same wind also stung me like heck.
Time had passed since I was last conscious; the sun has been high in the sky in my last memory. What awoke me from my much needed slumber was the irritating tickling of ants walking on my body; attracted by the sticky liquid pouring from my abdomen onto the flower-decorated dirt. The little jerks were drawn to it like it was spilt syrup, but of course it wasn't, it was blood.
Every time I took a breath the straining of my muscles sent a shot of searing pain to my injuries. I grimaced each time and the more often I felt it, the more my breathing quickened. I was getting myself riled up.
Maybe I could take a rest if I were to stop breathing altogether, just for a few minutes. Usually, the idea of entirely halting my respiratory functions would seem appalling, seeing as how it would, you know, kill me. Right now, though, breathing was the enemy.
The wind was gentle and ruffled my hair slightly, yet farther down it ripped at the raw flesh of my open wounds as though it had swelled up to a raging storm.
Several feet above me the branches of the trees twined into each other, I couldn't distinguish the leaves attached to them, though. I heard them rustle in the wind, which is how I knew they were there. The image was distorted; my vision was messed up for some reason. All I could see were coloured dots. It looked like one of those stupid impressionist paintings in which you could only recognise a picture if you stepped back, only I couldn't go any farther away like this.
One of the ants rebelled against its natural mindless conduct of following the others single file and split from its group, beginning to make its way up my neck.
Darn, that tickled. I didn't think I'd ever be any happier to have a magnifying glass than if I were to have one right now.
The little insect reached my face and circled over my cheek. I swore to God that if I would survive, I was to kill every ant I ever see again.
I didn't want that little jerk to get into one of my eyes, so I closed them. God that felt good. I didn't think I'd be so tired.
A sound different from the wind or the birdsongs softly tickled my ears. I couldn't distinguish what it was, but I did know I liked it. Something touched my face, something besides the ant and the wind, something warm and soft.
My eyelids wouldn't reopen at first; they seemed to think I was better of in this half-slumber. After disagreeing with them and commanding them to obey me, the bright colours of the world around me smashed at my retina. It hurt.
What I had heard was a voice, I realised as I saw the girl that was touching my face. Unlike the rest of my surroundings her face was very distinct. She flinched when I opened my eyes but she didn't retreat her hand. Instead, her rosy cheeks became plumped with a smile. "Thank goodness, you're alive! Oh, I've seen too many dead to be able to bear another, surely."
Maybe it was the way the sun made the hair that cascaded around her shoulders sparkle so, or maybe the childlike chime of her voice that was so pleasantly calm even in this situation, or maybe it was because I was half-unconscious. Whatever the reason, I could truthfully say that she was the prettiest thing I had ever beheld.
She slid her other hand behind my head and carefully lifted it up. From this new angle, I could see her folded legs on the ground besides me and the hem of her skirt, both amidst the pool of blood I had produced.
Darn, what a jerk I was for ruining a cute girl's clothes like that.
"Does that hurt?" I wanted to speak, I really did, but my vocal cords, like my eyelids earlier, had plotted against me. Darnit, if I couldn't talk, then how was I going to apologize for bleeding all over her?
Now that it no longer rested on the ground, my head felt heavy. I no longer felt the pain in my upper body every time I breathed; it was as though her presence had sucked that out of me. Each second, the world around me got blurrier yet she remained clear as day.
After a moment of silence she endeavoured to continue her task of getting me off the ground. I doubted she would be able to carry me, but it didn't seem to matter at the time. The warmth of her hand was removed from my face and found a new position, sliding down my back. She lifted my torso off the ground.
This time, it did hurt and though I still seemed to lack the ability to speak, I was more than capable to scream. She winced and one of her hands touched my face once again, it felt warmer than it had before, although perhaps it was my skin that had become colder and not hers.
"S-sorry. But I need to get you away from here. You'll die if I leave you like this, right?"
Her voice quivered. I could just kick myself for being such an oaf, now I was getting her worried. She should not have to be worried.
Her cheek touched my shoulder as she came closer.
God that hurt.
I could feel her warm breath in my neck.
How much blood had I lost by now?
Her soft blonde locks touched my face.
I'd lose consciousness if I was held up like this any longer.
My voice still wouldn't let me speak, so I didn't even know her name.
I didn't think I'd ever felt more pain in my life.
I was happy like this.
It seemed I'd had a change of heart -as I inhaled, I smelled her scent: like violets and honeysuckle- breathing was not the enemy anymore; it was in fact a really good idea.
"I'm sorry. This is probably going to hurt a little." Her sweet voice escaped softly from her lips, so close to my ear.
Oh yes, breathing was definitely a good idea.
That was all for the prologue. I hope you liked it.
I won't continue if I don't get any reactions, so if you liked this, please leave a comment.
This picture here was my original draft for the cover, but the plans I had for it were much too ambitious to be succesfully executed with my limited abilities and so I scrapped them.
Oh, and just to clear things up: there are no vampires in this story. None. Because people have been asking before, so now I'll say it right away.
