Hushed I

Written by klc0000

I hope you enjoy.

I apologize for never finishing Everworld, I had tried to back up my sims (When I got a new computer) on a floppy disk...and well...it didn't turn out as planned and I lost everything.

I just felt that it was too much work to re-create every sim, setting, etc.

But I hope this new story will make up for it.

=)
A dream.

Merely a dream.

Yet Evangaline couldn't shake the importance of it, how some part of it felt like reality.

It was very quick, as though she was only getting a brief glimpse of the whole picture.

A man, with reddish black hair and a marking right next to his left eye, stood, dark blue eyes narrowed in determination.

She recognized the background behind him.

Her bedroom window that was placed right infront of her closet.

A feeling of urgency surrounded her dream, as though something dreadful was about to happen.

"Hurry!"

This was the only word spoken from the man, just before darkness inclosed around her.
Suddenly she was julted awake, sitting upright so quickly that her blankets slid off the bed onto her hardwood flooring.

She had grown used to the vivid dreams, having them almost every night.

Most of the time they'd turn into nightmares, but this time, it was just a brief glimpse, not giving her enough time to see the horror behind the dream.

But she had a feeling she would find out soon.
Seeing how in some way shape or form, her dreams always seemed to come true.
And now that beautiful window which she decorated in a soft fabric was looking more and more like a danger to her.
She'd have to remind herself to install locks on it.
Her eyes drifted to the alarm next to her, praying with all her might that it would be time to go to work, she didn't know how long she could stay in this room, let alone this apartment, with that dream still on her mind.

But to her dismay, she still had three hours till it was time to even wake up.
She lifted herself off of the bed and walked towards the window, examining it.

The gate should keep anyone from being able to climb in, not to mention that she was on the second floor.

"Calm down Eve, it was just a dream, it doesn't mean it'll come true." Evangaline, or Eve for short, mumbled under her breath.
She walked into her bathroom, splashing some hot water on her face to wake her up, calm her nerves.

She needed to relax.

Just because she dreams of something doesn't always mean the dream will come true.

But the images of the past rushed to her, as though confirming that she was wrong.

Her father's car wreck.

Her mother's illness.

Her sister's departure.

And everything else that followed up to this moment.
Who was she kidding?

Of course it would come true.

This mere thought sent chills up and down her spine.

She pushed away the image of the stranger in her room, and decided she would go to work early.

Her mother once tried to explain these dreams to her.

But at that time, when her mother was on the brink of being labled dilusional, she wasn't really up for a story about the future and sight seers.

But ever since her mother tried to inform her of her "gift" the idea always laid in the back of her mind, nagging at her whenever she had a dream come true.
She got dressed in a simple shirt and jeans, seeing as how she'd have to change into a nurse's outfit when she got to work, there was no real need to get all dressed up.

She pulled her hair out of it's braid, letting it fall to her shoulders and then worked on getting some food into her stomach.

She was never much of a breakfast person, bacon and eggs making her nausous by the mere smell, and cereal just not satisfying her completely-not to mention it tasted like card board-

So instead, she made herself some mac and cheese, hoping the warmth of the noodles down her throat would calm her just as the warm water on her face earlier.
But it didn't do as well, though at least it was better than the usual breakfast foods.

Her mind kept drifting back to her mother, which is why Eve hated silence or free time.

Her mother had kept trying to convince Eve of people with "abilities" such as herself.

She would say over and over again how Eve could see the future, of how some could travel back and forth in time, how some could destroy a whole city with just a twich of their finger, and how Eve must keep her power and secret.
But the poor soul was mentally ill.

Nothing she said could be taken seriously.

Could it?
No that was silly.

No one could go back and forth in time.

No one could destroy a city so quickly without any weopons of mass destruction.

And no one, especially not Eve, could see the future.

And any other ability that may have been mentioned was impossible as well.

She finished her meal, or some of it at least, and washed the bowl clean till it sparkled.

She caught a glimpse of the clock and realized that it was time to leave for work.

Finally, something to take her mind off of this nonsence.
The sun had not yet risen over the horizon, showing it was very early, but this was the time Eve had been told to go to work every morning, with the exception of weekends.

She turned on the lights of her jeep, and pulled out of her garage, leaving the apartment complex and heading to work.
Eve arrived at the hospital rather early, but still, it should've been filled with patients, not a few nurses.

Something was wrong.

Was the hospital being closed down?

Were people being laid off?

No, she had to calm down.

Her hectic morning was affecting her thinking.

There was probably nothing wrong what-so-ever, just less people hurt or sick.
"So did you guys hear?" One of the nurses, Emily, questioned.

"Dr. James has gone crazy." She added with a snicker.

Immediately Eve was confused. Was Emily just joking or actually serious? Was that why it seemed rather quiet in the Hospital?
"He is not!" Another nurse, Jamie, sighed with aggravation.

"What happened?" Eve finally questioned, too confused.

Jamie turned to look at Eve head on, determined to shed some light on what was really going on instead of rumors.

"Dr. James just has some theories he wants to test out." She explained.
"Theories, more like whack job conspiracies. And he thinks that he can just use us as guinea pigs to test them out on." Emily interrupted.

Conspiracies?

Now Eve was really confused. What was he doing?

"What is he trying to do?"

"He thinks its possible that some people can contain supernatural abilities. He says he's found a way to figure out who possess these abilities." Emily laughed.
Eve struggled to swallow the growing lump in her throat, her mother's words ringing in her ears.

Her rantings about abilities and powers becoming real before her eyes.

"Why would he want to find out?" She questioned shrugging a bit.

"He says their not safe, or at least some of them aren't. And he just wants to protect us from those with abilities." Jamie explained this time.

"He was also saying something about using some of the people with useful abilities. Said that they could help a lot of people." Emily added.
"But it's just a theory, it can't possibly be true. More than likely, this 'experiment' will just be a waste of time." Jamie said.

Right.

Jamie was right, well about some of it.

This will probably be just a waste of time, nothing will happen.

"I heard Dr. James already tried it out on a few nurses." Emily said this time, her voice in a hushed tone as though she were telling a secret.
"What happened?" Eve urged.

"Three other nurses, two he sent home for the day off, its our 'reward' for letting him do this, he said they were fine." Emily said.

"What about the other one?" Eve asked.

Emily's face turned to a smile, that could scare anyone with ease.

"I heard Dr. James found something in her. Said she had abilities that were too out of control. I heard he knocked her out and is now running tests on her."
"That’s just gossip!" Jamie said angrily.

"Sure, whatever you say. Lets just hope you don't have any 'powers' " Emily laughed clearly showing she believed none of what the Doctor was saying.

"When are we supposed to go get tested?" Eve asked.

"He said alphabetical order as soon as you're ready. I'm next" Jamie said.
With that Jamie left, probably growing tired of Emily's gossip.

Evangaline leaned on the lockers, letting out a few deep breaths as soon as Emily followed her lead. There was no such thing as the supernatural.

There couldn't be.

Eve's dreams were only that.

Just dreams.

Taking that test will do nothing.

Dr. James will find nothing, and just as Jamie said, this will all most likely be a waste of time.

There was nothing to worry about.
It wasn't long before it was Eve's turn.

She made her way to the room where all the nurses were meeting with the doctor.

He sure didn't look like a whack job.

Maybe just a little over worked and tired.
"Ah, Evangaline, I'm glad you showed up." He said smiling sweetly.

"I'm taking it not many people are showing up to this?" Eve questioned smiling back.

"Not many."

"So what are you going to be doing to me?" Eve said with a little laugh trying to keep everything light.

"It's really very simple actually. I'm just going to be taking a sample of your blood, well a large sample, not just a prick, but its not dangerous. Then I will take a look at it and we will see if you have any highly evolved cells"

Really it sounded like gibberish, but what she got out of it was that he would take some of her blood, test it, and then come back and tell her if she has abilities or not.
"All right, what ever you say." Eve said, still a little unsure about the whole thing.

She walked towards the hospital bed, sitting down comfortably.

Dr. James followed after her, a needle in his hand.

He did everything he said he would do, nothing more.

He numbed the inside of her elbow, stuck the needle in, as if you were giving blood, and within seconds he left her alone in the room.
That was when the fear began.

She lied down on the bed, waiting for what seemed like forever as Dr. James tested her blood.

He's not going to find anything.

She continued to repeat this, telling herself that she had no powers, therefore it was impossible for Dr. James to find any proof of supernatural abilities.

But her gut throbbed with a feeling other than relief.

She was frightened for her life, her mother's words echoing so loudly in her head.
Just as Eve was beginning to grow impatient, Dr. James returned, his face in utter shock.

"I was right!" Was the only thing he said.

"What do you mean?" Eve questioned, sitting up now, her heart floating to her mouth.

"Evangaline, you have supernatural abilities!" He exclaimed with such enthusiasm it nearly knocked Eve off the bed.
"What?" Eve said in a low whisper.

"Tell me please! What can you do? Your cells aren't lethal so you can't be a danger! But it must be something wonderful! Please, tell me!" Dr. James said, looking like he was about to receive a surprise.

"I have no ability!"
"Yes you do! Now stop lying to me! What is your ability?" He repeated, getting agitated.

"No I don't! Now if you'll excuse me, I think I'm gonna take a day off, I heard that’s what we're supposed to get for even agreeing to do this!" Eve said now annoyed that the man wouldn't just drop it.

"No! Not you! You have an ability, and those with abilities must stay so that I may research!"

"HAH! You've got to be kidding right? I'm not staying anywhere except my home. I'm not a guinea pig and I don't have any abilities!" Eve growled.
"Oh yes you will!" Dr. James growled, lunging out to grab Eve's wrist.

Eve merely pulled back bumping into the wall behind her.
"Don't touch me you psycho! I'm out of here! I quit!" Eve nearly yelled, pushing past the doctor and marching towards the door.

Well wasn't this just the cherry on top of a horrible day.
She should've left as soon as Emily and Jamie told her about the doctor's theories.

But how was she supposed to know she'd turn out positive
She entered into the nurses' locker room, meeting two pairs of very curious eyes.

Emily and Jamie were standing next to their lockers, looking perfectly fine and serene.

It seemed the test didn't show up positive for 'them'.
"Hey, did you get a day off too?" Emily questioned with a sarcastic smile.

"Um, not exactly..." Eve mumbled under her breath.

"What happened?"

"I quit. That idiotic doctor! You were right he is insane." Eve growled angrily.
"What'd he do?" Jamie asked now entering into the conversation.

Eve couldn't exactly tell them that she had the ability to see into the future, in fact she wasn't really sold on the idea either.

"He tried to convince me that I had powers and that I needed to stay. When I refused he tried to force me and I quit." Eve said nonchalantly.
"Whoa I knew he was crazy!" Emily laughed out loud.
Jamie's face turned sympathetic.

"Oh wow, I never thought him for the type." she said shocked.

"Yeah, well I'm sick of him, I'm sort of glad to be rid of him." Eve said crossing hr arms angrily.

Jamie stepped forward now, offering Eve a hug.

"If you need anything just call, okay?"
Eve merely nodded.
"I'm gonna go ahead and head home." She mumbled walking past the two girls to grab her clothes out of her locker, not bothering to change.

"Alright, I'll see you later." Emily replied just before Eve left the Hospital.
She arrived home quickly after changing in the hospital's bathroom.

The sun had finally decided to come out, but this did not brighten Eve's mood.

She was furious.

She refused to believe that she had abilities.

The doctor was insane, just like her mother was.

Simple as that.

She got out of the car, giving the door a firm slam, and started up the stairs to her flat.
The room was empty, quiet, allowing her to fume in peace.

She was done with this ability and power nonsense.

It was all impossible and anyone who said otherwise was crazy.

She needed to rest, needed to relax.

The day would be over soon and she'd never have to deal with this ability nonsense again
She escaped into her bathroom, deciding to let the warmth of a hot bath relax her.

Which it did wonderfully.

So much so that she decided that she might be able to take a nap, it would definitely let her forget about this horrible day.
She changed into a simple tank top, lying down comfortably in her bed.

It wasn't too long before she drifted into sleep.

Thankfully she didn't dream, to tired it seemed, so she was able to just rest.

Though merely a few hours passed before she was awaken.
Her dream had indeed came true.

But certainly not in the way she expected.

In fact the window was not used at all.

In a sudden bust of what looked to be light, a man appeared next to her window, staggering a bit as though he was trying to keep his balance.
Truthfully she wasn't as frightened as she should be, already knowing this would happen.

But what frightened her was the way he came into her room.

"Who the heck are you? Get out!" She nearly screamed, some how, her legs found a mind of their own, marching towards the man.
"Calm down! Please!" He growled as though he was greatly aggravated by just being in her presence.

"Now will you just listen to me, for two seconds?" He added before Eve could object.

But Eve wouldn't pause.

"Who are you!" She demanded.

"You should know! You saw me coming!" He replied.
"How did-" She began, but was cut off quickly.

"You're not the only one with abilities. Now before you go running off to call the cops or scream, or what ever, just listen to me!" He said with a heavy sigh.

Eve crossed her arms over her chest, eyes narrowed onto the man.

But he seemed pleased.

"We don't have much time. People are going to come to take you, thanks to the little test you agreed to take. You need to come with me." He said struggling to explain as fast as was possible.

"How did you know about that?"
"We don't have enough time! Listen, you need to change," The man said rather annoyed, marching to Eve's closet and looking through her clothes.

"Preferably into something warm and durable" He added moving away from the closet and back towards Eve.

"Why? What is going on! I need some answers before I just go running off!" Eve growled.
But suddenly something grabbed the man's attention.

"They're coming! Hurry, get changed!" He said, not bothering to look at her.

"I'll explain everything once we're out of here, but there is no time right now! Your life is in danger, that’s all you really need to know right now!" He added now looking at her, his dark blue eyes boring into her's.

"Fine."
The man ran out of the room, though she was nearly positive he still remained in the home.

He wasn't a mirage or another dream.

This was really happening, and according to him, her life was in danger, and she figured it had something to do with her 'ability' which she now was considering that she actually had.
A few seconds after she had swiftly put on a white long sleeve shirt and some of her thickest pair of jeans, the man entered back into the room, this time using the door instead of appearing out of thin air.

"They've just got done searching the second apartment, we've got to go now, are you ready?" He questioned sounding out of breath.

"Yeah..." Was all Eve could manage.
"Alright, then lets go." He said his voice sounding oddly a little more relaxed.

His hand was now held out, signifying her to take it.
Swallowing hard, she reached out, just barely touching his warm hand.

That’s all it took.
A flash of light surrounded the room and within seconds the two were gone, just barley escaping.

Though the two were apparently not fast enough to escape from being seen by Dr. James.

"NO! She was found!" He nearly roared in fury.

"By who?" One of the soldiers who accompanied him asked.
"By one of her own of course! Did you not see that light?" James screamed.

Though the soldier did not speak, silently questioning James's sanity.
The darkness that surrounded Eve soon faded away, letting her see her new surroundings.

The man dropped Eve's hand and crossed his arms, looking very relieved.

"Welcome to your new home." He said sarcastically.

He moved to walk past her, but Eve grabbed his elbow halting him.

"Alright, we're 'safe'. Now I want my answers."
