-Six Years Later-

The air was warm, hinting at the impending spring season, as Adriana sat in the living room, contentedly watching her young daughter draw a picture with her crayons. She couldn't help a smile from forming at the corners of her mouth as it often did when she was around her children. All of them, the twins and her youngest daughter, Sophia, were the lights of her life. And, of course, their father's.
Adriana thought back to several years earlier when motherhood had just begun for her...
In the months after the twin's birth, she had wanted to get back into shape. Although she was run off her feet with her motherly duties, she still managed to find some time each week for her fitness. It had been such an important part of her life before her daughters arrived, after all.
Many discussions had been held between Jonas and herself about their future nuptials, but both agreed they should wait until the twins were a little older. This gave Adriana extra time to get back in shape for her big day and she was very grateful.
The fairytale wedding did finally happen, though, and what a wedding it was. It was the icing on the cake for Adriana, and she was so happy to become Mrs Ramirez at long last, surrounded by all her loving family and friends. It was a memory that always brought her happiness. The twins, Melody and Madison, were three by then and were there with their parents to share their special day, looking like little dolls with their matching dresses and hairstyles.
Jonas had been ever the romantic that day, and it just embedded what Adriana already knew in her heart. He was the one she had waited so long for, the man she was meant to start a family with, and with whom she would grow old.
In the years that followed, it was not uncommon to find the young family together in the twins room. Madison and Melody both loved having stories read to them, and there was no better storyteller than their own mother. Jonas would often be listening in the background, happiest when he was with his family and seeing them so happy.
Adriana and Jonas were amazing parents, they did everything they could to ensure their daughters' happiness which in turn, ensured their own happiness, too. There was no doubt in Adriana's mind that the years that had just gone by, and the years that were yet to come, would always supply her with happy memories for as long as she lived.
Suddenly, her thoughts were interrupted and she was hauled back to the present. "Mum? Mum? Where are you? I can't find my shoes!" came a familiar voice, shouting from the hallway.
"Madison, there's no need to yell like that," Adriana called back, albeit quieter. "I'm just in the living room with Sophia. Your shoes are right where you left them yesterday, didn't I tell you to put them away? Be quick, or you'll be late for school."
The sound of feet rushing back up the stairs was her response. She sighed and stood up, lifting Sophia into her arms. "Let's go find your other sister, sweetie, otherwise we'll never get going."
It didn't take long to find Melody, she could usually always be found by the pool these days. Although there was a definite difference in the twins personality, there could be no one who was closer than they were. Melody was quiet, gentle, calm, and easy going, whereas Madison was quite outgoing, wasn't afraid to raise her voice if need be, and was happiest when she was the center of attention. Madison was also more fashion conscious than her twin, who was happy to wear the first thing she put on.
"Melody, honey, are you ready to go?" asked Adriana.
Melody scrambled off the chair. "Yea, mum. Where's Maddy?"
"She's just getting her shoes. Go wait by the car, we'll be there in a second."
Waiting by the door for Madison, Adriana kissed Sophia on the cheek while brushing a strand of her daughters dark hair from her eye. She gazed upon her finely built face and smiled. There was no doubting that she was a Ramirez girl, they all looked so alike.
Remembering Sophia's birth like it was yesterday, all the contentment came flooding back. She and Jonas had felt incredibly blessed to welcome another daughter into their family four years after the twins, and life had never been better...or busier!
"Come on, Madison, we have to get a move on," Adriana called up the stairs. "You've got two minutes to get down here."
"Ok, ok," came the reply. "I'm coming."
Meanwhile, later that day, Nick felt as proud as he had ever been. Jack had just taken his first steps. "Jack, you did it!" he cried, scooping the little boy into his arms. "Who's a clever boy?" Jack giggled in his father's arms, enjoying the attention.
Nick couldn't believe it had only been just over a year since he and Zak adopted Jack, making them a family. So much happiness had flooded them since his arrival, they couldn't imagine life without him. And now he was walking...time just flew by.
Joining them in the living room, Zak was curious to what all the commotion was about. "Did I hear right? Did Jack just take his first steps?" he asked.
Nick beamed, unable to hide his joy. "He did! Can you believe it?"
"Oh," Zak replied, obviously disappointed. "I missed it..."
"It was only a couple of steps, you'll see him do it again," Nick said, reassuringly.
Zak frowned. "It was a milestone...his first steps." He paused. "Never mind, we can't rewind time. I'm glad he did it, though. Come and have some lunch and you can tell me all about it."
Placing Jack into his highchair, Nick could smell the delicious aroma of steak and salad surrounding him. He could never get enough of Zak's cooking. "Mmm..smells fantastic," he said, getting a bowl of food for Jack to eat.
"I hope it tastes as good as it smells," Zak laughed.
Taking a seat, Nick replied, "It always does."
They started eating straight away. After swallowing a mouthful of food, Zak said, "I have to admit, I cooked the meat to perfection".
Nick nodded. "Yes, just as I predicted," he replied, winking. "You know, I was just thinking before how great everything's been since Jack came into our lives. Don't you agree?"
"Definitely! He's made me feel young again and to be honest, I'm so glad I got the chance to be a dad again."
"Yes, and I got the opportunity for the first time," Nick said, cutting his steak. "Finally I wasn't just an uncle to four nieces...as happy as they make me."
Zak laughed. "Yes, all girls, and finally we brought a boy into the family. Mind you, he's going to be spoilt rotten. Not that he'll mind," he said, glancing over at their son who was eating his dinner ravenously.
"I don't think any child would mind being spoilt," Nick chuckled.
Suddenly, a noise from Jack interrupted them. It sounded too loud to have come from their little boy, but both Nick and Zak burst out laughing and Jack looked up, unaware of what he had just done.
"Excuse you, buddy," Nick said when he could talk, his ribs sore from laughing. "It's a great talent you've got there, but it sure won't attract the girls."
Zak turned to Nick. "I think he's learnt that particular 'talent' from you. If you're not careful, he'll soon be able to burp the alphabet!"
This comment only fueled Nick's laughter, and there were soon tears trickling down his cheeks.
After he could calmly talk again, Nick turned to Zak. "I'm so happy, you know that. I've got you, little Jack here, and both my sisters are doing well along with their daughters. I really couldn't ask for more, could I?"
Zak nodded and smiled. "Nor could I, we're very fortunate. And we've got Candice's birthday coming up as well. I feel like an old man now that she's turning twenty. She's got her own life now and I still remember when she was just a little girl."
"I know. Time flies and before we know it, Jack will be taller than us!" Nick replied, chuckling.
"No! Don't say that," Zak replied, his eyes full of horror, then laughed with him.
Undressing and stepping into the warm shower, Miranda closed her eyes. She had just got home from her day at court and it had been a long day. She loved her job, don't get her wrong, it was just exhausting. She had been working on this case for months now and she was very glad it was over and there had been a positive outcome for both herself and her client.
Steam filled the room, enveloping Miranda into a cloud of mist. She closed her eyes, savoring the relaxation she felt at that moment. Each drop released some tension as it made contact with her skin, then slid down her body, washing away the pressures of her day.
As she stepped out of the shower, feeling clean and rejuvenated, Miranda heard the unmistakable sound of her daughter's footsteps on the stairs. Jessica was home from school. Wrapping a towel tightly around her hair and body, she went to greet her pride and joy.
"Mum!" Jess cried, spotting her mother at the top of the stairs.
Miranda smiled. "Hey, sweetheart, how was school?"
"It was great...except for maths," she replied, making a face. "But we got a new girl in our class and she's my new best friend."
"That's lovely. I'm glad you'll make her feel welcome."
"She lives just across the street, mum, and she asked if I could come over to play. Can I, mum, can I? Pretty pleeease?" Jess looked up at Miranda with her breathtaking green eyes and delicate features, her blonde hair perfectly framing her face. People often commented how alike mother and daughter were, yet they didn't realise how deceiving Jess could be. She could be very crafty at times.
Miranda considered this. "Yes, ok. But just for an hour and then I will be over to get you. There will be no hiding, do you hear me? You've got homework to do and dinner will be ready soon."
Jess smiled, showing all her perfect teeth. "Yes, I know. Thanks, mum!"
She reached up and Miranda lowered down to wrap her daughter in a warm hug. She was grateful her daughter was so affectionate, it always made her heart swell. This little girl was the most important thing in the world to her and she wouldn't think twice about giving it all up to know she was safe and happy.
After Jess had safely crossed the road, Miranda towel dried her hair and clasped it back with a clip, loose strands falling across her face. She quickly dressed and went to make herself a strong cup of coffee.
With steam swirling under her nose, she brought the cup to her lips and took a sip. She flinched as the hot liquid burnt her tongue and placed the cup down to cool. Gazing out the window, Miranda reflected on the past six years. Six years...she couldn't believe it had been that long already.
It had been the worst time of her life when Mitch had left her. And Jess. It was just like a new Mitch suddenly took over, he didn't want any part of his old life any more. She hadn't understood it for a long time until about a year after their split...
Although she had been used to life without Mitch by then, had accepted it and moved on, it still came as a shock to Miranda when Mitch had walked into the cafe she just so happened to be in one morning. With another woman. She had already come to realise there had been another woman in the picture when Mitch left her, but she had never seen 'her'.
Sitting in a back corner, neither of them noticed her and for that she was glad. She couldn't help but observe this woman, the woman who had stolen her husband's heart. She was beautiful, there was no doubt about that; curvaceous, glamorous, confident, exotic looking. Everything Miranda wasn't. But neither did this woman exude what Miranda prided herself on; class, subtlety and dignity.
Shaking the memory from her mind, Miranda gulped down the last of her coffee. It's all in the past, she told herself, time to move on. She knew it would be hard to move on with someone else, though, as much as she wanted it. She had thought these thoughts many times, but they never seemed to change. At least Jess still saw her father, that was the main thing.
She cleared her mind and remembered the load of washing she had to do. That was one thing she could always count on to be there for her, no matter what - housework.
Later that night, as the full moon came out and shone brightly in the dark sky, Miranda and Jess slept peacefully. Both were having dreams, yet they were very different indeed. Jess was in a field of flowers, smiling and happy, running to join her mother and father who were holding each other, relaxed and content. Across the hall, Miranda was dreaming of a man. A man whom she could not see the face, yet could feel him all around her. A man who provided her with love, warmth and protection. Fifteen minutes away, another household was tucked away and sleeping soundly. While a big friendly giant visited little Jack in his sleep, his parents were just in the next room. Occasionally Nick stirred restlessly but Zak held him close, his arm around his waist. His dreams were full of house designs and blue prints of which his whole working day comprised of. Further towards the coast, lay a house with a full family inside. All the children lay sleeping, having been worn out from a long day. The youngest daughter, Sophia, lay in a dreamless slumber, the only sound being from her slight breathing. Downstairs, her older sisters were away in another world.
Madison's lips moved, her sleep talking barely audible. "I don't want lollies, I want ice cream!"
Her twin remained silent aside from a twitch in her left arm. She stirred, repositioning herself before laying still once more.
Out in the living room, their parents, Adriana and Jonas, sat entwined together. Jonas put a protective arm around his wife and kissed her cheek. "Everything's perfect, Ada, everything's perfect," he said. "You've given me everything I could have ever wanted."
Adriana didn't need to say a word, he knew she felt the same. Resting her head gently against his chest, she smiled as she thanked the heavens above she had been given the chance to learn to love.

Amazing, amazing story! I loved every minute of it and a wonderful ending! You are truly a wonderful story teller and your way with words is just awesome. I smiled often through out the whole story and a few times my heart sank, like when Adriana lost one of her babies and Jonas was in a coma and we didn't know if he was going to make it. Also the romantic parts were so sweet, if Jonas could be human then he would be the sweetest kindest man ever known! lol I would've liked to have seen more of Nick & Zak's relationship though. They are so cute togther. But I guess you can only go so far with them. \:confused\:  Awesome work Sam! \:wub\: \:\)
