Laurie had found it: the perfect apartment on the edge of downtown Bridgeport. The neighborhood was clean, the bar was within walking distance, and the rooms were spacious and sunny. Laurie had invited her all her new work friends to see it: in her new living room sat Harry and Pierce, both scientists; Isabella, the maid; and Mason, the security guard.
“So beautiful!” Isabella said, touching Laurie’s arm. “I’m jealous! Do you need a roommate?”
Laurie had been grateful to find one other female working in the mansion, and the two had quickly become friends.
Laurie shrugged. “I wouldn’t mind.” Her apartment had a spare bedroom for guests; she intended it for her parents when they came to visit.
“This place must have cost a fortune,” Isabella noted.
They should have seen her when she got her first paycheck online. She was at the library when she received the email on her phone… the first cut of her godly salary. “I AM ZEUS!” she had yelled, throwing her fists in the air. The other library dwellers had glared fiercely at her for that. “I’m not supposed to tell you guys about this, so don’t tell anyone else,” Mason announced. “But on Friday, Dr. Valentine told me to start planning for the fall Expo!”
Harry did a fist pump. “Women everywhere!”
Isabella’s head drooped. “I’m not allowed to go.”
Mason scratched the back of his head. “Well, you could go if one of us invited you…” he said.
“Yes, that would be nice. But who would take me?” she sighed. Mason turned red, even though Isabella wasn’t specifically referring to him. Laurie chuckled to herself—well, that was cute. She would have to tease Mason about his crush later.
Pierce was the only one who didn’t seem excited about Expo. Laurie bumped him in the shoulder. “Are you going to Expo, Edwin?”
He grimaced. “I used to take my wife to Expo. But we’re going through a divorce, now.” He seemed torn up about it. Laurie winced; she didn’t even know Pierce had been married. He didn’t wear the ring.
“Cheer up, buddy,” Harry said. “This is your chance to find a new girl.”
“Yeah, c’mon, Edwin! You have to go,” Laurie exclaimed, tugging Pierce’s sleeve. “Harry and I will make absolutely sure you have a good time! By the end of the night, you’ll have only good memories to look back on,” Laurie promised.
Pierce shrugged. “Well. I suppose I could use a fun night.”
Laurie’s work was going well. She made good time on her projects, and never gave Seth the opportunity to scold her again. That Monday, while she was working the ultra-high vacuum machine, Seth dropped by the lab to inspect her progress.
“Dr. Valentine,” she cried. “To what do I owe the pleasure?”
“Your reports are too good. I came to find the mistakes you’re hiding from me,” he stated coldly.
God, what a buzz kill, she thought. “You won’t find any here, sir.”
Seth went around the vacuum machine and inspected its parts while Laurie prepared to open the load-lock chamber. Seth looked up. “I wouldn’t do that if I-“
Too late. When Laurie opened a little door, there was a loud WOOSH sound and a series of little alarms went off. Laurie cried out in panic--What had she done?
Seth shut off the alarm. “Can you tell me what you did wrong?”
Laurie’s shoulders were up to her ears. “…I forgot to close the analysis chamber first, Sir.”
“Correct. And now, the entire machine is contaminated with ambient air and the vacuum has collapsed. It will take 72 hours to bake out and get the pressure down again,” Seth stated, tapping his fingertips on the control panel. “Not only have you damaged my fifty-thousand dollar machine… you’ve wasted your whole work week.”
The room was gravely silent for a moment while Seth waited for Laurie’s response. She was almost angry at how unfair this scenario had been. She couldn’t even please Seth when she did a good job. Now, she had to mess up right in front of him. That machine was so complicated to run, she was bound to forget one little step eventually.
“I don’t know what to say, Sir,” Laurie said, looking at her palms.
Now was his chance; he should fire her. It would be perfectly justified. Mistakes like this should not be tolerated under his watch. He opened his mouth to say it, but no words came out. A moment passed in silence
Just do it! he thought. Tell her. You’re done. You are a distraction and a nuisance. Get your things and leave.
Laurie’s head drooped, as if she could read his thoughts. “I’ll pack up my things and get out of your way, then. Sorry for wasting your time, Sir.” She turned toward the door.
“Where do you think you’re going?” he snapped. “I’m not going to sit here and clean up after you every time you make a mess. I’m going to teach you how to fix the machine.”
Laurie turned slowly, her eyes full of surprise. After all the stories she’d heard about how mean Seth could be, all the verbal abuse and angry looks… he wasn’t firing her?
“Dr. Valentine… thank you,” she said awkwardly. She wanted to hug him, but she thought he might change his mind about firing her.
“Pay attention,” he said, gesturing toward the pressure controls. “You want to make sure the nitrogen and helium valves are closed before you do anything…”
He stayed with her for the rest of the morning, teaching her the intricacies of the machine, which he’d built himself. Laurie caught his every word; she was so eager to learn, a fire alarm would not have distracted her. For years she’d only read about Seth in science magazines and publications, but now she was getting a lesson from the creator himself.
While he was going over the ion pump, he glanced over at her. “Why are you smiling like that?”
Laurie shrugged. “This is why I came to VT. I’ve always wanted to hear you speak about your work. It’s quite brilliant.”
Seth wasn’t sure how to respond to her compliment, so he went on about the machine. Laurie was an attentive student; she asked questions, made propositions, even suggested how he could improve his design. She had that geeky grin on her face the whole time. He wished she would stop; her smiling seemed out of place in his laboratories. By lunch time, Laurie had finished her lesson. She kept thanking him for his time and patience. He told her to stop thanking him.
“Really. Stop it,” he snapped as they entered the hallway. “You make me sick.”
Laurie was still grinning. “Are you going to lunch now?” she asked, unbuttoning her lab coat. “Would you like a piece of my chicken pot pie? I made it last night, and there’s plenty of it.”
Seth hesitated. Without meeting her eyes, he said, “That is a tempting offer, Miss Fell, but I now have work to catch up on. In the future, try to be more careful with my things.” He quickly departed for his personal lab. Laurie shrugged to herself.
Seth wasn’t sure how to describe what he felt. He supposed “emasculated” was a good word for it. He shook his head as he walked, expelling a sigh—it looked as if Laurie Fell would taunt him with her presence for awhile longer. “I don’t believe you!” Isabella yelled, gazing vindictively at Laurie. “That can’t be true! Dr. Valentine was nice to you?”
Laurie and Isabella were dress shopping downtown. Laurie had insisted that Isabella try on a few dresses, just for kicks. Laurie had every intention of buying one for Isabella with her serious salary.
“Well, he wasn’t exactly nice, per se,” replied Laurie. She was sitting on the bench usually reserved for bored boyfriends. “He just let me keep my job. I was totally expecting to be fired, right there. I could see it in his eyes.”
“That sounds pretty generous of him. He fires people fairly often. The last maid before me got fired after working only two weeks,” Isabella commented, observing her satin dress in the mirror. It complimented her figure nicely.
Suddenly, she gasped and covered her hand with her mouth. “Maybe he likes you. Like, maybe he really likes you!”
“No way,” Laurie cried. “He doesn’t like anyone!” She scratched the back of her neck, looking unconvinced of her own words. Well, she wanted him to like her a little; he was her boss. Or was there more to it than that? How gratifying it would be, to be respected, treated as an equal, by the great Seth Valentine?
As a romantic option though… no, no, and no. Firstly, it was flat out impossible; Seth wasn’t capable of feeling love. And second, it seemed like a really terrible idea to date her boss.
“Valentine loves you,” Isabella teased, waving her hands in Laurie’s face. “You should put out for him!”
“Stop it!” Laurie laughed. Eager to change the subject, she said, “That dress looks really great on you. You should get it.”
“But it costs a fortune,” said her friend, sulking. “And when will I ever wear it? I probably can’t even go to Expo.”
“Oh, you’re going to Expo,” Laurie said. “If Mason doesn’t ask you to be his date, then I will! Don’t worry about the money, I’ve got it.”
“Mason?” The look on Isabella’s face changed completely. “You think Mason wants to take me out?” Laurie nodded, and Isabella let out a squeal. She threw her arms around Laurie. “You are such a good friend!”
Laurie gasped for air. “You know what they say… friends don’t let friends go to Expo naked.”
She tried to forget what Isabella had said about Seth. She hoped her friend was wrong about his feelings. She really, really hoped.

I knew it, Seth and Laurie are starting to like each other for real (just the idea of seeing them together makes me chuckle of happiness xb) Oh, and I have I already said that I absolutely love the way you write?
