Here we are at Part 3! Thanks for all the wonderful feedback on this story so far and I hope you enjoy this new installment. I also want to thank all the wonderful artists of the cc in my stories, as always. Nearly everything in my stories is usually custom so I would be lost without it! Looking into his kind eyes, I still felt uncomfortable. "Uh...that didn't really answer my question," I said with less confidence than usual.
"No, I'm sorry, it didn't," he answered smoothly. "I apologise. My name is Derek Shultz and I work closely with your husband, Julian, at Montrachet Industries. He has asked for my assistance during the problems the business is experiencing. I believe he has an office here that he uses frequently?"
I suddenly felt very relieved. "Oh, yes. Is the business ok?"
"I'm sorry, I can't pass on any information at the moment. Even to you."
His eyes showed genuine regret. "It's ok, I understand. Business is business," I said. "You probably don't want to be standing out there all night, come on in."
Standing aside, I let him pass and led him to the sitting room. It felt less sterile than the other rooms, more welcoming.
"Would you like a drink of anything?" I asked.
Looking around the room, he replied, "No, thank you, I'm fine."
Suddenly I felt very aware that I was dressed in my pajamas, ready for bed. Not a very good impression.
Flushing a little, I walked towards the fireplace and lit a fire, staring into the flames licking out at me.
"I, uh...wasn't really expecting anyone tonight, as I'm sure you have noticed." I didn't turn to face Derek but felt his gaze upon me.
"Yes, I was aware you weren't expecting me," came his reply. "But the last thing I would want you to feel is self conscious. If this is what you look like ready for bed, I can't imagine how much more beautiful you are when you try."
Had anyone ever said sweeter words to me before? I couldn't recall any such times, unless someone had wanted something from me. No one had ever been genuinely kind to me.
"Look, if you want something - "
Derek cut me off. "No, I don't want - or need - anything from you. I was just stating what I believe is true. I apologise if I've made you uncomfortable. The purpose of my visit is purely business."
I turned to face him. "So Julian sent you?"
"Yes," he replied. "He asked for me to work from here while he is away. I will be conversing with him during this time as he needs access to files here."
I simply nodded.
"He has given me permission to occupy his sleeping quarters while I'm here," he continued. "But if you would prefer, I can find accommodation elsewhere."
Who was I to challenge Julian's requests? I had no authority, I was a nobody in this matter.
"I assure you it's no problem." I gave him my warmest smile. "If you're going to be around for awhile yet, I had better introduce myself and show you where you're staying."
"Charlotte, right?"
I let out an embarrassed laugh. "I should have known you would be two steps ahead of me."
Half an hour later I was back in my bedroom, alone. After giving Derek a quick tour of the house and showing him to his room, I had left him to do as he pleased.
I wasn't expecting to have much more to do with him. He was only here for a short time, after all.
A week later, I found myself eating dinner alone at the kitchen table when I heard someone enter the room behind me. A smile played about my face when I heard his voice. Derek.
"Do you mind if I join you?"
Without turning, I replied. "Not at all. Make yourself at home, I'm almost finished anyway."
After retrieving his dinner plate from the oven, which the cook left for him, he took a seat opposite me.
"Please, don't hurry because of me," Derek said, looking straight at me with those piercing gray eyes. "I enjoy your company."
Looking up, I merely smiled at him.
As we both ate in silence for the next few moments, his words put my mind into gear.
I enjoy your company....
For the past week we had eaten numerous meals together, engaging in several conversations, and I found myself feeling more and more comfortable around Derek. More comfortable than I had felt around anyone else in my life, more comfortable than I should have felt around him. I couldn't understand these feelings and the guilt that came with them. Was it wrong that I enjoyed another man's company while my husband was away in another country?
Feeling myself blush at the thoughts running through my head, I swallowed what I was eating and looked up at Derek.
"So, how's everything going with the business?" I asked.
He met my gaze and frowned. "Not so good. Especially based on how long it's taking to sort everything out. I had expected everything to be returning to normal by now."
Moving the food around my plate, curiosity got the better of me.
"Are you able to tell me anything yet? About the problems in the business, I mean?" I hadn't asked since Derek had first arrived and the question was gnawing at me.
He looked at me silently for what felt like a lifetime, taking in all my features as if my face could tell him whether I was trustworthy or not.
Finally he replied. "Look, I believe I can trust you but none of this information can leave this house, ok?"
I nodded. "I swear I won't tell a soul."
"Things aren't looking too good, as you know." His voice was barely above a whisper. "It was discovered that an employee with a high ranking in the business has been dealing in some dodgy business. A lot of money has gone missing and if word gets out to the press, Montrachet Industries could lose a lot of their shareholders."
"Oh...that is serious." I couldn't think of anything else to say.
"Yea, that's why Julian had to go over there straight away," Derek continued. "But they keep finding more and more missing money by the day. Obviously this guy had an accomplice in the finance department who was turning a blind eye on all the disappearing money."
My mouth gaped. "Why would they do that?"
"Personal gain is my guess, but the amount missing is running high into the millions already. It's going to be hard to keep this under wraps."
Millions? Someone had stolen millions from the business? It was hard to wrap my head around.
"Well, my lips are sealed. You have my word."
Derek gave me one of his million dollar smiles. "I know."
That night, as I lay in bed unable to sleep, I couldn't get Derek out of my mind. He was kind, considerate, and he trusted me completely. He treated me like a person, which is more than I can say for Julian.
He seemed to genuinely enjoy my company and respect what I had to say. He smiled and laughed with me, and when I spoke, his eyes never left mine.
He caused my heart to beat faster whenever he was near and I longed for our conversations to go on forever.
I felt like Cinderella and Derek was the prince who held my missing slipper; just waiting to find me.
I must have drifted off to sleep with that thought in mind, because I woke the next morning feeling like I had exited a fairytale. I felt beautiful, loved, special...
Until I realised I was Charlotte Montrachet, not Cinderella. I had no Prince Charming about to sweep me into his arms and put me on the back of his pure white horse, riding off into the sunset. I had no one.
After eating some breakfast, I showered and put on my swimsuit before lounging outside by the pool. The sun's rays had a magical effect on me, warming my body and soul. Just what I needed. By midday, though, my throat was as dry as a desert. I woke myself up enough to go inside, before returning to the pool with a drink much stronger than the water I had previously intended on retrieving.
I did deserve it, after all.
I found myself in the sitting room later that afternoon with another empty glass beside me. I was feeling quite drowsy and closed my eyes as I lay back on the couch.
I heard someone come in a few moments later and opened my eyes. Blonde hair, beautiful smile; Derek.
"Feeling ok?" his voice echoed through my head.
I smiled. "I am now."
Before I knew it, he was in front of me. "Charlotte..." his voice trailed off.
Putting my finger to my lips, I stood. "Shhh...you don't need to say a word."
Before either of us knew what was happening, our lips were touching...our bodies entwined. The passion, the desperation between us, was expressed in that moment. I needed Derek, wanted him so much. I forgot about any feelings of guilt in the heat of that moment, I just wanted Derek to want me as much as I wanted him.
I didn't care for the consequences of our actions.

Ahhh... Sam!!! beautiful screens!!!! It's almost the world upside down. He, the complete stranger walks into her house and stays and finally he's telling her something because he trusts her... What about her trusting him to be all that he says he is? I wouldn't trust a complete stranger like that before calling Julian and ask about it... He is very handsome and a gentleman though. I wish she would pack her bags and LEAVE that house and her husband! Intriguing story!
