Happy New Year everyone! I hope you had a fantastic time seeing out 2009 and introducing 2010; let's all hope it brings bigger and better things :-D
This story has seen in a new year but only just...this is the finale to My Own..., so I really hope you have enjoyed riding the roller coaster which is Charlotte's life and are geared up to hopefully start enjoying another of my stories very soon...my first Sims 3 series!
I don't know what I'm going to title it yet (I've just started writing it) so I can't say what to keep an eye out for but just to watch this space :-D And thanks for all your overwhelming support for this story!

Sam A humid breeze swept through the house and I wiped my brow. It had been muggy all day and the dark clouds settling outside threatened a welcome release.
Washing my hands, I left the half stuffed turkey on the kitchen bench and went to call Derek inside. As soon as I stepped outside, I saw him across the yard playing contentedly with his beloved dog, Charlie. I couldn't help but smile, happiness pouring out of my heart.
"Sweetheart," I called. "It's time to come in. You have homework to do and then I would like you to have a shower before we have dinner, ok?"
"Ok, mum," he called back, throwing the stick to Charlie one last time.
"And leave Charlie out here," I added, "we'll bring him in when we have dinner." Returning to the kitchen, I continued stuffing the turkey and grinned as I heard footsteps rushing inside and up the steps.
I knew I had been blessed with my son, he was an angel. Ever since he was born seven years ago, which still felt like yesterday, he had never given me any problems. He was polite, helpful, caring and respectful, making me a very proud mother. It was impossible now to imagine what life would be like without my little man. Sticking the turkey in the oven, I let out a long yawn and looked appreciatively to the coffee machine. I couldn't imagine life without that, either.
I poured myself a cup, drinking it quickly but savoring every drop. Then I went to the study to check my emails. I was expecting some quotes from several travel agencies regarding a much needed holiday. I was slightly disappointed at an empty inbox but half an hour later, a quiet voice piped up from the doorway.
"Mum?"
I turned to meet the gaze of my beautiful boy. "Yea, honey? What's up?"
"I need some help with my homework."
"Ok," I replied. "You go on up and have a shower and I'll be there when you hop out." I sat there for several moments after he had left the room, staring at an empty space.
Memories of Derek flooded my mind as I thought how special he was to me. As a baby cradled in my arms; as a toddler taking his first steps; being read his favourite story; every moment with him was precious. I had never loved anyone so much as I loved my son. Reaching Derek's room, I found him already waiting for me, dressed in his pajamas.
"That was quick!" I laughed.
He smiled. "I wasn't very dirty today and I didn't want to waste any water."
I couldn't help but let out a little chuckle. His awareness of situations that some adults had no idea about amazed me everyday.
"That's very thoughtful," I replied. "Now, where's this homework?" We sat together on his bedroom floor and worked through the problems as a team. Every time he looked up at me, searching my face for the solution, I caught a glimpse of his father in his cloudy gray eyes.
"How about ten divided by five?"
Flash. Derek's arms were around me, there was a storm billowing outside, his eyes full of desire. Hours of making love was followed by a dreamless sleep, entwined in each other's bodies.
"Mum?" My eyes focused again and I blinked several times.
"Sorry, sweetheart, what was the question again?"
"What's ten divided by five?" he repeated, unfazed by my lapse in concentration.
"Well, how many times can five fit into ten..." Back downstairs, I went straight to the oven and removed its contents. The turkey was perfect; my mother had taught me well. Placing a serving on three plates, I called out to Derek that dinner was ready. He joined me in the kitchen in less than a minute.
"Can you go wake up Grandma for me, please?" I asked. "She needs to have some dinner."
He nodded and rushed back upstairs. Poor mum, I thought, I hope she gets better soon. She hadn't been feeling well for the past week but it didn't seem to be anything major. Just a tummy bug, we assumed.
I was glad that she was here with Derek and I, where we could keep an eye on her. All those years ago, after Derek was born, she had decided to move here with me which was the best decision for both of us. Once Derek had been born, I knew she had realised this was her chance to have a hand in raising her grandson since she had been deprived of that chance with her own daughters. I feel for my mother seeing as Grace has never tried to contact her even though she knows exactly where she is.
A fuzzy image passed through my memories which made me grimace; a photo I had seen under the 'marriage announcements' in the paper several years ago. Yes, Julian and Grace.
Although not a complete shock, I hadn't really expected that they would go as far as to marry. They deserved each other though, well and truly. It was only poor Brian, Grace's now ex husband, who my heart went out to. But none of this was important now, I had a new life, a new life which didn't involve any of those people. It was just a past life to me, something I had to go through to experience the bliss I was feeling now.
Derek was the main priority in this new chapter of my life, he had been from the moment he was placed into my arms as a tiny bundle of joy. His daddy's gray eyes, the sprinkle of brown hair, his chubby little hands; they had pulled on my heart strings instantly. The intensity of the love I felt for my son was almost unbearable at times. "Grandma will be down in a second."
I jolted, unaware of Derek's presence behind me. "Oh...ok, thanks, sweetheart. Your plate is on the table so you can get started."
I placed mine and my mother's plates on the table also and took a seat across from Derek. It was only a minute before my mother joined us, taking a seat next to her beloved grandson. "Did you have a good sleep, mum?" I asked, noticing a considerable improvement in the colour of her cheeks.
"I had a wonderful sleep, thanks," she replied, smiling. "And don't you go worrying about leaving us here tonight. Derek and I will be quite fine, won't we sweet?"
I chuckled as she winked knowingly at Derek to which she received a big smile.
I definitely wasn't worried about leaving them alone; they adored each other and loved spending time together. They knew how to contact me and I wouldn't be out until all hours, after all.
It was just a little thing called nerves. My mother continued. "It will be good for you, you know. It's been too long, much too long, since you have so much as given a glance to a lovely young man."
Moving the food around my plate, I felt like a teenager again. It wasn't just excitement and anticipation I was feeling, though, it was worry and uncertainty.
"Well, you know, these things take time," I said, stealing a glance at Derek who was oblivious to anything except his food. "I don't even know if I'm ready yet." I finished applying the last of my make-up half an hour before Tyson was due to arrive. I slipped into a sexy figure hugging dress and admired the view in the mirror.
"I'm like a whole new person," I whispered to no one but myself.
Was it too much, I wondered, for a first date? No, no, it's not a date, I reassured myself. And besides, I had already decided not to worry about what other people thought of me. I had done that enough in the past. If Tyson didn't like what he saw, there was nothing keeping him here. But what did I feel? That was a whole other story.
I definitely felt nervous, that was for sure. Even though I wasn't considering it a proper date, I guess it was in some way. I hadn't really even been on a date before! Seen as my father was so strict, I wasn't allowed a boyfriend until he arranged for Julian and I to get married. Talk about a shock to the system! Then I met the love of my life and my son's father, Derek. Falling in love immediately, there was no need for any awkward dates.
So, no wonder I was nervous right now! Just then the doorbell rang through the house. It gave me the shock I needed and I took one last look in the mirror. Smoothing down a few stray hairs, I moistened my already glossy lips and took a deep breath in.
I rushed downstairs and called out, "I'll be there in a second!"
Before answering the door, I found Derek and my mother watching TV and gave them both a quick hug and kiss.
"You look beautiful, mum," Derek said sweetly, a smile lighting up his little face.
Tears pricked my eyes. "Oh, sweetheart, thank you. Coming from my main man, that means the world to me." I couldn't help but give him another kiss. "Now, you know how to contact me so call if you need anything, anything at all. I love you both."
"Love you to, mum," Derek replied. I moved swiftly to the front door and opened it to a tall, striking man. Tyson. His piercing blue eyes shone brilliantly and I noticed they drank me in admiringly. It was his smile, though, that grabbed my attention. Perfect and bright...just like Derek's had been.
Stop it, I scolded myself, this is Tyson, not Derek.
His lips began moving and I had to focus on the sound. "...look beautiful, Charlotte. Are you ready to go?"
Plastering a smile on my face, I replied, "yes, all set." We didn't get back until almost midnight but when we did, I realised I was smiling and laughing, genuinely having a good time. It was much more than I had expected to get out of the night so it was a great surprise.
The hardest thing for me to overcome was the guilt I felt at moving on from my soul mate, Derek, even though many years had passed. Yes, he was gone forever but my heart was still very much with him. I knew no one could ever replace him even if I came to love them, but Derek would want me to move on, be happy, and I was going to try my hardest. I was already happy in every other aspect of my life but if a special man came along, I would give it a chance. And who knows? Maybe that man is Tyson.
