Ava Woodhaven, despite being a teacher, has a lot to learn.

Ava Woodhaven, despite being a teacher, has a lot to learn. Ava Woodhaven sat dejectedly atop a box amidst the clustered sea of packages containing all of her personal belongings. She barely noticed the cold rain that steadily drenched her through to the bone, as she was buried in deep thought. This was the last place she wanted to end up – back in Cornerstone, the small country town that had been the setting of her miserable childhood. Ava tried not to think too much about the past at the moment – that could wait until after she’d gotten her belongings out of the rain. Ava’s belongings were scant, but the cottage she’d moved into did not take much to fill. Advertised by the real-estate agent as “cosy” and “petite”, Ava discovered that the place was just downright small. She’d been so desperate to leave the city after her messy breakup with her long-time fiancée that she simply hadn’t cared where she’d gone or what she lived in – a sewer pipe would be fine, anywhere if it meant she could escape. As she prepared a basic meal of Ramen noodles, Ava thought back to her childhood in the dead town, memories she had tried so hard to repress, and unwillingly began to cry. As a child growing up in Cornerstone, things had not always been tainted with misery. Ava and her sister Mina, younger by two years, had been firm friends, and spent countless hours lost in imaginary worlds together. The small home that the girls shared with their parents, Addie and Ronald, had been a warm place full of harmony. All of that changed, however, when one morning Addie and Ronald called their girls into the kitchen, stating that they needed “to talk”. The tension was palpable as the girls took a seat at the kitchen table. The room seemed to grow colder, a clear reflection of Addie and Ronald’s negative moods.
“Now girls,” Addie began softly. “You know that your father and I love you both very much, right?”
Ava bit her lip, feeling nervous. Something was definitely wrong.
Neither of the siblings dared to utter a sound, and simply nodded in reply.
“Your father and I have decided to… spend some time apart,” Addie said quietly.
“Wh-what do you mean?” queried Mina innocently, as both sisters began to sob.
Ronald, who had remained silent up until this point, managed a wan smile at his daughters. “Your mother and I are going to be living in different places from now on,” he explained.
“But that doesn’t mean we don’t want you to visit both of us,” added Addie quickly, pointing at the girls.
Ava and Mina could do nothing but cry.
Time passed quickly after Addie and Ronald’s divorce, and he remarried and began a new family. He continually claimed that there would always be room in his home and heart for Ava and Mina, but after the arrival of his new twins, his time was always occupied.
Addie coped with the turmoil in her life by throwing herself into her work. She was a sharp and savvy businesswoman, and began to work longer shifts as to avoid her home life.

Times were difficult, and Ava and Mina felt like they had lost both parents for good. Mina coped by acting out, and her once sweet nature seemed to shift to the other side of the spectrum. She became surly and disobedient, and purposefully tormented Ava whenever possible. Ava, however, retreated from reality by escaping into books. From that time forward, she was never without a book in hand, and spent hours tucked away in her bedroom soaking up literature like a sponge. She developed a passion for English, a passion that followed her into adulthood. She decided to utilise her skill for language as a career, and became an English teacher. As she was fresh out of college, she had only worked at one school so far, a large high school in Sim City, although she had left that position following the demise of her relationship with her fiancée.
Ava had found new employment in Cornerstone, having been hired as the new English teacher at Cornerstone High – a job that she was to begin tomorrow.
