Thanksgiving was at Don’s parent’s house. Paul always decorated for every holiday and this year was no different. Paul’s mom, Kumi, served the turkey buffet style and everyone rushed to get in line. After dinner we gathered in the living room. The only topic of conversation that year was our upcoming trip. We all knew there would be many challenges. This was the first settlement on the moon and none of us could say exactly what would happen. Soon it was Christmas and we would be leaving in a few days. Time to say good-bye for now. What we could take with us was minimal. Equipment for the Brandywine, clothing and a few supplies. Everything else would be provided by the military. We would be building our homes with many resources that would be available on the moon. We did bring seeds to garden but until our gardens were grown, we would be eating military rations. Mmmm! NOT! It was a long time before our home was built. Much had happened. Our spacecraft had problems in landing and it was severely disabled. As was our communication system. We were completely shut off from earth. While the military worked on re-establishing communication, they also were trying to repair the spacecraft. Some were assigned to gathering natural resources to build homes. There was no wood here, but there was an unlimited supply of metals. That is what we built our homes with. There were trees, but there “wood” was more like rubber. So even our furniture was made with metal. Gino was settling in nicely. He had his doll, Buddy, that my great aunt had given to him when he was born. He played with Buddy all of the time. And Snowpea was able to hunt for lizards and snakes. That kept him busy, too. Fishing was supposed to help supply us with food, but we found the fish to lack in the nutrients that we expected. In fact, food was becoming a problem. The soil for our gardens was different as well. The scientists were working on a solution for that. I had come here as a scientist but they needed doctors, too. So many of us were getting sick from the lack of nutrition and trying to adjust to this new world. I took on the role of doctor and a hospital was built. I worked on many projects at once. There was a lot on my plate. Many people were depending on me and the other scientists and doctors to find solutions to all of these problems.
