I dressed quickly and grabbing my cell dialled Cornelia’s number. “What did you do?” There was silence for a moment then “What time is it?” I replied a little after nine in the morning. “Ergh, daylight, call back later when it’s dark.” Like I could wait till then “You did something, what was it, am I a vampire?” I blurted, could I believe it – vampires. “Okay” Cornelia’s voice drifted down the line “Yes and yes.” What? “Yes I did something and yes you’re a vampire.” I started to have trouble breathing, did I still breath? “Welcome to the club” she hung up. Music and drama clubs yes even the secret society at Uni was a club but this…. That night I slept badly. I dreamt of fangs and blood, of shunning daylight and worse – of being alone. How could I carry on at work? Did I want to live in perpetual darkness? Questions ran round my head along with images of my family. Would I be welcomed by my mum and dad, would I see my brothers and sisters grow up? On the other hand, there were plus points to this life for instance I looked fantastic and my strength and abilities were far better especially at night. And the need to sleep in a coffin was just stories. A few nights later Cornelia met me after work. I discovered that sunlight was okay in small doses although it was uncomfortable. “It’s different alright” said my friend and maker “but it’s a good way of life.” I was still trying to see the good points as the bad ones far outweighed them but I’d decided to give it a go but if it didn’t work then there was a cure at the science station on the hill. Cornelia said she hadn’t heard of anyone taking it but as far as she knew it was available at a price (figures) and that it worked. “Just try it Sam, it’s an honour to be one of us and the benefits – wow” she gave me the thumbs up. Deciding to give vampirism a go I agreed to attend a party that weekend. I met a lot of new people including a man called Ethan Bunch. We clicked right away and spent the night chatting. He was between jobs and spent most of his time reading or gardening. He was really sweet. We spent the evening together and before I knew it the party was over and I was heading home. Now I had a problem, while Conner was hot he didn’t like company much and we only talked over the phone but Ethan…. Mmm! A few days later I got a promotion. Dashing out the shop I saw Conner and yelled at the top of my lungs. Stopping he turned, grinning at me “The whole of Sunset knows about it now, well done.” I suggested going out to celebrate “Sorry but I have things to do at home perhaps another time” I headed home feeling flat and dejected. Conner was a hottie but his dislike of company was a letdown. My mind wandered back to the party…and Ethan. Things became a steady routine of work, sleep and more work. I was starting to feel really low when an invite to another party gave me a boost. The weather was hot and sticky so the dress was casual. I’d been there an hour watching everyone dancing and have a good time. They were nice enough but all seemed to know one another and I was feeling like the spare wheel. “Hi Sam.” Jumping as I nearly spilt my drink “Ethan, how are you?” The night looked better. I had just got dressed the next morning when my phone went. “Hi Sam its Ethan…” My heart started to thump wildly (yes my heart still beat) “Ethan how nice….”
“Will you go out with me?” Okay that did make my heart stop, stutter then start again “Yes” excitement built until I was practically jumping up and down “I’d loved to go out with you Ethan. We arranged to meet after I finished work.
The night was beautiful. Stars shone brightly in the inky sky while the gentle breeze sent the lovely scent of flowers and hot dogs – well I was getting hungry. Ethan was a gentleman, opening doors and taking my arm, could someone really be this good. I had a lovely time, talking and joking. We laughed when Vita Alto suddenly produced flowers for Malcolm Landgraab; the poor man’s face was priceless I mean Vita was old, really old.  A commotion had as turning. There was Caesar Perkins happily walking down the street when BAM Grim is in front of him. It was kinda creepy watching the shrouded man of death standing coldly with old man Caesar begging for his life. That put a dampener on our night but Ethan asked me to see him again and I said yes.  Do you know how difficult it is to brush your teeth when you have a set of fangs permanently hanging from your gums? If I’m not knocking the brush against them I’m scrapping the stupid brush across them…cringe, the feeling is something like running your nails down a chalk board then there’s the fact you need to pay them attention to. Still I had a great night if you don’t think of old Caesar. Ethan is really nice, good a genius and someone I could spend the rest of my existence with, if he doesn’t have a problem with vampires.
