Welcome everyone in the Legacy Over History! This legacy will continue through ages till we reach the present. Come join us on this journey from corsets to push-up, from long dresses to hotpants, from telegraphs to cell phones, from organised marriages to on-line dating...from 1870 to 2008.

London, 1870. This is the house of the Crawford family - a family that mean respect and fear...
Helena was a wonderful and loving mother, and despite they had Miss Milford as a nanny, she spent most of her time with her son. Oliver was growing extremely fast, and she wanted to see all his movements, because she didn't have a chance to experience it again... Lionel gave them everything they needed. He felt a little guilty that he worked so much, but when he was at home, he didn't let Oliver out of his hands. All his concernswere gone when he first held his son in his arms, and now he was a caring but also playful father. But Helena and Lionel tried to spend time together as well. Their love was still deep, and it grew even deeper as time went by. Years flew away like minutes, and soon Oliver became a toddler. The little family often took long walks in the garden, and even darkness didn't disturb them. Helena tried to teach Oliver how to walk and talk, and as the little baby became more and more clever, she became prouder and prouder. They loved lying in the grass, gazing at the stars. Oliver was amazed by the tiny shining spots on the sky.
Everything was so calm and peaceful around them.
Everyone agreed that Oliver was beautiful. He had his father's snow white skin, but he had black hair and ocean blue eyes that were always staring far away..., and he inherited them from his mother. Slowly Oliver grew into an extremely playful boy, and then he became a good-looking, well-built young man. One day they were sitting in the salon.
"Lionel, don't you think so that Oliver should get married?"
"Well, that's true that at his age I had an eight-year-old son, but it is a different age. Soon a new century will come, and maybe marriage is not that important anymore."
"I know. But I just want to hear a little baby's voice in the house."
Lionel looked at her.
"He had met dozens of girls. He is constantly in love, and you can't expect him to settle down now."
"Do you think that he will ever settle down?" she asked anxiously.
"Yes. One day he will find his love and get married."
Then he added.
"Maybe it will be in a few years...He is such a restless boy. But one day everything will change, believe me."
"I hope so."
Lionel pulled Helena closer.
"But I promise that I will let him choose his wife, and whoever he chooses, I will accept it. I know how important it is to marry your love."
Helena hugged her tightly.
"Thank you. It means so much to me that you don't force him into an organised life!"
Helena spent most of her time reading catalogs of French department stores and ordering fashionable dresses. The world was changing as the 20th century was coming, and so did fashion. The clothes became simpler and narrower, and of course, more comfortable now that huge skirts were gone. Time went fast for Albert and Marianne, too. They slowly became old and weak, and they talked more and more about death. One day the Rogers family visited the Crawfords. The Rogers' were the owners of a rival store, but while the Crawford store grew into a department store, theirs lost more and more money every year.
The Crawford family wanted to buy their store, but they weren't so keen on selling their property to their rivals. Helena and Lionel asked Oliver to take part in the business meeting, as he was supposed to take the store over someday, but he wasn't very interested. He was sitting next to Sarah Rogers, the daughter, and she seemed more interesting to him
"Mama, I am bored." she yawned then she noticed the swing outside. "I am going out."
Oliver jumped up.
"I'll go and show her the garden."
"So, why did you come out with me?" she asked teasingly.
"I just needed some fresh air." he replied quickly.
Sarah smiled.
"Of course." she said, rolling her eyes.
She didn't behave like a lady. In fact, she was fiery and always honest. She was different from the vain girls around Oliver, and he knew he wanted to marry a girl like her. "What does your mother say that you are behaving like a man sometimes?" he said suddenly.
"What is that supposed to mean?"
"You are not a lady. I like it." he smiled.
Sarah didn't smile back.
"I am a lady!" she shouted.
"If you say so. But you are definitely not an ordinary girl."
"Why do you, men want us to be ordinary, in other words, boring?" she asked then walked away angrily.
'Oh my, what have I done?' Oliver thought. 'I have to be more cautious next time.'
Oliver got even more interested in her. She was not easy. She definitely was a challenge, and he loved challenges. She wasn't angry if he heard a good joke, and she never tried to follow the rules all the time.
It became colder and darker outside, but they didn't move.
"I just wondered if marriage can tame you." he said teasingly.
"Try it." she replied misteriously.
"No way." he claimed quickly.
"I knew it. You are coward! All of you are coward! You men are all afraid of marrying a girl who can talk and who has opinion!" she said then turned away angrily. "I am not afraid of you!" he replied angrily. Then he asked softly: "Do you really want me to try?"
"It depends."
"On what?"
"On what you want to give me if we get married."
"Whatever you need"
"Just give me an example."
"I can give you love." he said.
"Love? that's all?" she asked, but oliver knew she was joking.
He kneeled down.
"I can give you all my love if you marry me."
"Oliver, it is unnecessary! Get up! You don't have to be like all these gentlemen!"
"I am a gentleman. As much as you are a lady. Now be quiet and listen to me. Marry me if you want to be happy for your whole life!"
He took a little velvet box out of his pocket and opened it. Sarah noticed a small diamond ring inside.
"How come you have a ring in your pocket?" she asked curiously.
"Dad told me to do so. You can't know when you need it, can you? Now, what do you say?"
She took the ring and pulled it on her finger.
"This ring is beautiful. Does it mean that I'll get more of it after we are married?" she asked jokingly.
"I take it as a yes." Oliver said. "Let's go inside and announce our engagement."
"Hey everyone! I have to announce that Sarah and I got engaged!"
Samaire Rogers jumped up in anger and turned to Helena.
"Your son engaged my daughter? That's unbelievable!"
"Why? It has nothing to do with the store!"
"Oh yes it has! You planned it before to get my store!" Samaire yelled.
Lionel jumped up.
"No, Madame! You planned it before to stop us from buying your store! I don't let them get married."
"Thanks for understanding!"
Helena whispered.
"Lionel, can we have a word?"
"You told me that he can choose whoever he wants."
"I know, but...look, I can't let them get our store!"
"But can't we tell them that we are not interested in their store anymore?"
"Oh, come on! We need that store!"
"No, don't need it!"
"Well, but we just have to make sure they don't get strong and stop us!"
"But there is still a way to separate business and private life and prove the Rogers' that we didn't plan the engagement."
"What is it, dear?"
"Oliver won't inherit the business. After that we still can try to deal with them, but it won't disturb Oliver's marriage."
"Hm, let me think...good idea. But then who will get the business?"
"Rose. We have to take care for her as well."
"Okay. Then I'll go and tell him the facts."
"Oliver?"
"Yes, daddy?"
"You can marry Sarah."
"Thank you so much, dad!"
"Wait!"
"If you marry her, I can't give you the family store!" "Oh, dad! That's all?"
"What do you mean that's all?"
"Sorry to disappoint you...but I have never been interested in the business." oliver stopped. He was sure his father would be angry.
But Lionel wasn't."Fine then. I hope you will be very happy with Sarah." Then he headed to Samaire.
"Mrs. Rogers, would you let them marry if they are not interested in the business anyomore?"
"But you would still try to get the store!"
"Mrs. Rogers, that is our business, and it doesn't depend on our children's engagement!"
"But I wanted a better husband for my Sarah."
"Oliver is a wonderful man. He can give her everything she needs."
Samaire was thinking for a long minute. Finally she nodded.
"Well, if they want to, then I will let them get married!"
Meanwhile Helena looked at Albert. He looked so pale and weak.
"Are you okay?" she asked him anxiously.
"Yes. Well, it is just the age." "But you are not that old!"
"Oh, yes, I am, and I know my time is over. Oliver, my grandson is getting married, and soon he will have children. I have to give my place to them.
His eyes lost their shine, his skin was full of deep wrinkles. He got old, Helena had to notice, and when she looked at him, she could feel death. Sarah and oliver got married two months later.
Father Cristopher was helping them again, and the ceremony was held in the garden, where Helena and Lionel got married years ago.
Samaire was still angry at the whole Crawford family, but she slowly realised that their love was bigger than anything else... Now that they were married, they didn't have to hide their love from each other nor make fun of their feelings. They were happy together. Sarah still wasn't a lady but she didn't take everything so easily now. Deep inside she was a romantic girl... Soon she got pregnant. One day Helena was staring out of the window. lionel quietly stepped to her. "Are you all right?" he asked gently.
"Well...I was just thinking. We are getting old. our son is becoming a father, and our life will come to an end soon." she said sadly.
"We are definitely not old." he replied. "And we have plenty of time left. Now that our son is standing on his feet, we can have more spare time. Imagine what we will be able to do! Go hiking, travel!"
Helena hugged him tightly. She promised herself that she would enjoy the time that was left for her.
Albert and Marianne spent a lot of time together.
"I've read about a new investment today in the Times. It is called automobile."
"What is it?" Marianne asked curiously.
"It is like a horse carriage, but it doesn't need horses to go."
Then he stared out of the window.
"The world is very different than it was in my time, and I don't fit in here anymore. I have to go."
"That's not true." Marianne quickly interrupted.
But Albert shook his head.
"It is only a matter of time." he said. He didn't seem to be sad, though.
Miss Milford was getting old, too. She was too tired to work, but the family didn't fire her. They treated her as a family member. Marianne gave her old gowns to her, and she could spend her time reading and playing the piano. Albert died shortly after their conversation, peacefully. He went to bed the previous evening, and didn't wake up.
Lionel couln't accept it, and was crying for hours. Only his wife could calm him down.
Albert was buried on the bank of the lake in the garden - a place that he loved. The Crawfords gave him a tombstone made of marble and gold to show their respect and love. He was still alive in their heart, though. It was hard to forget him, because he was a wonderful person, a loving husband, proud father and grandfather, but also a strong businessman. Now that he was gone, Lionel was the head of the family.
"I will try to make him proud." he promised to himself. He felt sad that Albert couldn't meet his great-grandson, though.
But life went on, and one evening, oliver was standing in the salon in anxiety. "Don't worry!" Lionel tried to calm him down, but deep inside he was thinking of Albert, who did the same twenty-eight years ago.
Suddenly Helena arrived.
"Mama! What happened?"
Helena sat down. She looked very tired.
"Just give me a minute to catch my breath!"
Oliver's heart was beating loudly.
Helena slowly started.
"Congratulations, Oliver. You are the father of a beautiful daughter. Oh, my, that was a hard labour, but now both of them are fine."
She hugged him.
Oliver wasn't disappointed at all that he had a daughter. He knew that they can have more children. He wanted to have a dozen of them.
"Lionel was so proud of his son, and he was happy to be a granddad, too.
"You can come upstairs." Helena said.
Oliver rushed upstairs.
"Oh, thanks god, thanks god!" he was shouting.
"Do you remember?" Helena asked softly as she held Lionel's hand.
"How can I forget it? It was the most wonderful moment of my life!" Lionel said.
"How do you want to call her?" Oliver asked Sarah.
"Olivia. After her father." she smiled.
They both were happy that they became a family...

Excellent job with staying true to the time. I don't know exactly what they wore in the 1870s, but the fact that everything, even the rooms they are in look older creates an 1870s atmosphere. If you are going to create a legacy that spans from that time to the present then you are in for a long legacy. Should be interesting to see you stay authentic in the other time periods. Very nice job. I also did enjoy the story.
