Welcome everyone in the Legacy Over History! This legacy will continue through ages till we reach the present. Come join us on this journey from corsets to push-up, from long dresses to hotpants, from telegraphs to cell phones, from organised marriages to on-line dating...from 1870 to 2008.

London, 1870. This is the house of the Crawford family - a family that mean respect and fear...
Jonas Bradley, the butler gently pulled Caroline Crawford to his chest.
"I love you." he whispered into her ears.
"I love you too." she replied, gently kissing him.
"Let's get married then!" he demanded.
"You know how much I want to...but my parents..."
Meanwhile Marianne Crawford stepped to Albert Crawford.
"Caroline's wedding dress had arrived from Paris. Have you seen her? She has to try it on."
"She's in her room, reading I guess."
She slowly turned around.
"All right then. I'll go and speak to her." she suddenly stopped but didn't face her husband. "But Mr. Crawford, why do I feel that she doesn't want to marry Martin Rieke?"
"Marianne! She is just excited and worried if she will be a good wife! Give her some time!"
Marianne didn't respond. She quietly ran upstairs and was just about to knock on Caroline's door when she heard the strange noise...A man and a woman were laughing. Marianne's head turned red. She pushed the door inside as hard as she could. She was right. Her daughter was lying on the bed, wearing underwear. And then Marianne noticed the man who was lying next to Caroline.
"Oh, my god!" she whispered to herself as she recognised Jonas. She was shocked. Her noble Christian daughter was sleeping with the butler of peasant origins!
"Get out of bed!" she yelled. The lovers jumped up, scared and surprised.
"Oh, mother! Haven't you heard of knocking the door?" Caroline said.
"Am I supposed to be ashamed? It is you who... oh, my daughter, go and get dressed!" Marianne replied angrily. Caroline ran away.
"How dare of you to touch my daughter!" Marianne shouted at Jonas, then slapped him. "I don't want to see you here again!" But Jonas didn't move.
"Oh, my lady, please don't do that! Don't let our heart break!"
"I am not your lady! And that will be the best for both of you. There is no way you can be with my daughter. She is a rich girl, and you..."
"I don't care about money! I love her, and I know she loves me too! Please let us marry, let us be happy!"
"My daughter is engaged!" Marianne replied sharply. "She is engaged to Martin Rieke, who is the son of Lucien Rieke, the most powerful businessman of the world. Can you compete against him?"
Jonas lost his temper and burst out.
"But Caroline doesn't love Martin! Do you want your daughter to live sadly in an unhappy marriage?"
Marianne was surprised at Jonas' anger.
"i just want her to live in richness instead of the poverty you can provide her! That's why I will never let you marry her!" she shouted.
"But you'll have to." Caroline said quietly. She slowly walked inside, still wearing her underwear. She stared out of the window as she added: "I am pregnant."
Marianne quickly turned around.
"What? Are you sure?" she asked, and when Caroline nodded, she continued. "Get out of here! We will talk later!" Her eyes followed Caroline as she walked away, then Marianne turned to Jonas."Now you got what you wanted."
After that she left him and walked down to find Caroline.
"You betrayed me! You betrayed the family! You betrayed all the traditions that were alive for centuries! My marriage ws organised, but it is a happy marriage! I never even thought of another way of life! But you..."
"I am not like you! I wanted to have an exciting life!" Caroline shouted.
"You are not my daughter anymore!" Marianne yelled. "You will live in poverty forever with your 'love'! Is that exciting enough?"
"I will be happy, don't worry. Money isn't everything." Caroline responded without loking at her mother then walked away to get dressed. In half an hour Jonas and Caroline were gone, without saying goodbye.
"Marianne, what shall we do with the Riekes now that Martin's fiancée is gone?"
"I have no idea, Mr. Crawford. But it was my only chance! She is expecting Jonas' baby!"
Albert nodded.
"Yes, you were right. But I think Mr. Rieke will be mad at us..."
"Oh, I know. I'll write them a letter explaining the facts and sending my apologies."
Albert looked at her wife. They were not deeply in love, but they loved each other, after the decades they spent together. They were living a happy life. Maybe it was because Albert let Marianne do everything and didn't fight back.
"Fine, Marianne." he replied.
She quickly finished the letter, then went to the housemaid and nanny, Miss Milford.
"Miss Milford, take this letter to the Rieke family, and then wait for the answer."
Miss Milford arrived three hours later. The Rieke family's letter said:
"Dear Mr. and Mrs. Crawford! We agreed years ago about Martin and Caroline's marriage, and now you betrayed the agreement. If you want to make business with my company, you will have to have a connection with my family as well. I want to keep the compay in the family. In other words, if Lionel doesn't marry Helena two days later, our business deals are over! Lucien Rieke."
Marianne read the letter in shock. Lionel was only 18, and he was her favourite child, because he was so young, four years younger than Caroline, and therefore Marianne was still protective about him. She didn't want to let him go.
Albert, on the other hand didn't have concerns.
"Marianne, you have to understand that this is our only chance! If Mr. Rieke doesn't supply our store, then we'll have no money!"
"Yes, I know...but he's so young. He has just grown up...maybe he is still a child inside..."
"Then he'll need to get a little more mature. Soon he'll take over the family business." Albert said softly.
"Oh, I know. I know." Caroline replied sadly. But then she smiled. "But then I won't let them move away!"
Albert laughed. "If that's what you want..."
Lionel was playing chess in the salon. He loved playing chess, as well as riding horses, hiking and swimming. He was warm-hearted, generous and treated everyone equally despite their rank, so everybody loved him. But inside he was stilla little immature. "Lionel, dear, can we talk for a minute?" Marianne asked.
"Yes, mother."
Marianne quickly explained the situation that remained after Caroline left.
"It means that you will have to marry Helena Rieke." she concluded.
A worried look appeared on Lionel's face.
"What?"
"Look, Lionel, that's our only chance to save the family business..." Marianne desperately tried to persuade him.
Lionel stared out of the window for a minute. He was thinking. Marriage? With a girl he had never seen before? He didn't like to be forced into something, and he knew that an organised marriage was too much for him. "No! Mother, I can't marry an unknown girl! I mean, I can't marry anyone now!" he shouted.
"Marriage is not that bad. I'm sure you will be happy." she said softly.
"No way! I want to live a bit THEN get married! To the love of my life!"
"Please, Lionel, try to understand..." Marianne tried to calm him down.
But Lionel didn't listen. He walked away and ran upstairs.
The next evening the Rieke family were invited over for dinner. Everyone was at at the table...except for Lionel.
"Mr. Crawford, where is Lionel?" Marianne asked her husband surprisedly and angrily.
"I guess he is in his room." he replied then turned to Mr. Rieke and told him his favourite joke.
Marianne went upstairs and found his son lying on his bed.
"Lionel, the whole family is waiting for you! Helena is a lovely young lady! You have to meet her!"
"I don't care! I'm not going to marry her, so I'm not going down!"
"Yes you will! Do you want to be kicked out as Caroline?" she yelled.
"Why do you have to be so strict?" Lionel whispered, but he got up.
"So, Sir Rieke, Mr. Rieke, Miss Rieke, I want to introduce my son, Lionel Walter Crawford. Lionel, this is Lucen Rieke, our business partner, Next to him is Martin Rieke..." Marianne started to introduce everyone to his rather reluctant son. ...and over there it is Helena Rieke." she finished.
Lionel looked around the table. He didn't care about them, though. But suddenly his eyes reached the other side of the table...where Helena was sitting. She was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen. She had long black hair and white skin, and in her blue eyes he could see the ocean. He was lost.
The girl looked at him, and when their eyes met, she smiled warmly.
During dinner, they talked to each other most of the time.
After the dinner Albert, Martin and Lucien went upstairs to discuss the business, and Lionel could talk a bit more to Helena. Marianne sat down in the salon where she could see them but she didn't disturb them. Suddenly Lionel jumped up.
"Oh, Helena, do you know that your eyes are like the ocean? I got lost in them."
Helena blushed.
"Thank you very much, Mr. Crawford."
"Oh, Helena, your face is like the face of an angel..."
"Please, Mr. Crawford, stop complimenting! I don't want to hear more lies!" she interrupted, laughing but also embarrassed.
"These are not lies! And please call me Lionel!"
He grabbed her hand and gently kissed it.
"Dear Helena, you are the only woman that I could marry..."
"...I wish that you want to share your life with me...you are a wonderful girl!" he continued. "Please, be my wife!"
"Of course I will, Lionel!"
Marianne smiled.
"I told him they'll like each other, and I was right - again!"
The next day they got married in the garden of the Crawford Mansion, with the help of Father Cristopher.
Helena was wearing the dress that Caroline was supposed to wear.
All the members of the Crawford and the Rieke family were present...well, except for Caroline and Jonas... In the first month they didn't even want to get out of bed... Their life was perfect. Even though Lionel spent a lot of time working in the family store, he always bought a little gift for his beloved wife: chocolate, flowers or some jewellery. They were the happiest people in the world. But one day something happened.
Helena just finished dressing up. Lionel came in to say goodbye before going to work.
She nearly fainted, and fell onto the shelf at the wall. "Are you all right, dear?" Lionel asked, worrying. Helena didn't respond. Lionel gently put his hand around her and softly lead her to the bed.
"You need a rest, darling!"
Helena went to bed. Lionel watched every move she took, and after making sure she was safe, he left. In the afternoon Helena went down to the salon to read. Suddenly Marianne appeared.
"So how do you feel here, darling?" she asked softly.
"Wonderful! Everything is perfect in my life." Helena responded laughing. But she stopped suddenly.
"Are you okay?" Marianne asked.
"No. I feel dizzy. I have been like that all day."
Marianne looked at her daughter-in-law. Helena was pale. She knew it...she felt the same long, long ago...A smile appeared on her face.
"Just go to bed, dear. You need to relax as much as possible these days." she said softly.
Helena was still in bed when Lionel got home. "Mother, I am so worried about Helena. She is very tired and pale."
"You think she is ill?" Marianne replied smiling.
"I'm afraid that there's something wrong with her." he said, but then he noticed the smile on his mother's face.
"Mother, what's with you?"
"You know son...there is something with Helena...she is expecting a baby!" she said happily.
lionel sat there shocked.
"Are you sure?"
"Of course! I felt the same when I was expecting you and Caroline. I felt dizzy and was sick all the time. You know, Helena...hm...went to the bathroom. Pregnancy is like that."
"Congratulations, Lionel! You will be a father soon!"
Lionel's eyes opened wide. He kept shaking his head.
"A father? I don't think if I can be a good father!"
Marianne looked at him curiously.
"Remember what you said before your marriage...and now you are a perfect husband. You will be a perfect father as well."
"I am afraid that I'll do something wrong while trying to be perfect..." he said sadly.
"i am sure you won't"
Inside Lionel was happy that he was going to be a father, and by the end of the third month of Helena's pregnancy, he was very excited. Helena was excited too, but she didn't feel very well. The doctor claimed she was in danger, and ordered her to stay in bed. Lionel furnished a little nursery for the baby. He was very sad that Helena couln't help him, but he knew she would like the room. One day he heard music coming from the salon, and he went down curiously. He found Helena playing the piano. She was wearing a nightgown. "Darling, you shouldn't be here. You should be in bed." he said softly. "I am bored of spending all my time in bed. I want to have fun." Helena said raising her voice. "Why don't you draw something? I thought you liked drawing." Lionel asked.
"But I didn't leave my room for three weeks! Before that I went hiking or riding a horse every week! I feel lazy and useless here!"
Lionel leaned over and hugged her.
"I just want you and the baby to be all right." he replied.
He continued.
"After the baby is born, I promise to take you on a huge trip on horseback!"
"Oh, Lionel, I love you so much!"
"I love you too."
He gently kissed her.
By then he spent less time at work, and more time with his wife. He sat by her bed when she was resting, and talked to her to keep her entertained. They didn't notice, but the remaining six months flew away quickly...
It was a cold autumn day. Lionel was pacing the room nervously.
"Don't worry." Albert said.
"You know, when your sister was born, I was very nervous, because she was my first child, and I wanted everything to be all right. The time before the doctor came seemed like ages, but when he came down, I was the happiest man on earth. "Oh, I know, dad! But it is so hard to wait!" Half an hour later Marianne came down. Lionel's heart was beating loudly. "Come here, my boy! Congratulations! You are the father of a lovely boy!" she said then hugged him. Albert hugged him as well.
"Congratulations, my son!"
"When can I come up?"
"When the doctor comes down."
Albert kissed Marianne.
"Congratulations, granny!"
Lionel was thinking of Caroline and that his parents didn't even want to know how they were. He got a letter from her two months ago, after she gave birth. She married Jonas, and they moved to a small cottage house with their daughter, Rose.
He walked to the stairs. The doctor soon arrived. Lionel shook his hands.
"Dr. Peters, is everything all right?"
"Yes, the baby is fine. But..."
"But what?" Lionel yelled in anxiety.
"The pregnancy made Mrs. Crawford's body exhausted. Another pregnancy might kill her. Please keep it in your mind."
Then he left, and Lionel could see his little family.
Helena was in the nursery. The baby was sleeping.
"How are you, darling?" he asked.
"I'm fine. Look at him! He is so sweet, isn't he?"
Lionel looked at his son. He was really beautiful, and Lionel promised to himself that if he will be his only son, then he'll give him everything.
"Hello, Oliver!" he said softly.
"Oliver?" Helena asked surprisedly.
"I think he looks like an Oliver."
Helena laughed.
"Yes, that's true."
"Thank you for giving me Oliver!" he said.
"Did the doctor tell you..."
"Yes. And I don't mind. We will be very happy with Oliver!" he said and kissed her.
Soon the relatives came in, and the little nursery filled with life and love...
