Chapter 2:

Deeply depressed by the days events, Lennon walks aimlessly around town for a couple of hours after school trying to gather his thoughts.

His girlfriend was the first person on his mind each morning and the last person he thought of at night, he cherished her and could never imagine himself being apart from her. But now he was, he didn't know how he was going to cope.

Eventually he finds himself at his local Pizzeria with the intent to bury his sorrows with some serious comfort eating.
"Okay, I want a pizza, and I want everything on it. And lady, I mean everything. Last time I was here you guys were tight with the cheese and the crust was too burned for my liking. That would never happen in any Stalinsky restaurant, may I add.

Add a large soda with that and some icecream for afters, and make it quick. I don't like to be kept waiting!...Come on, get to it"
After eating a couple slices of his pizza with everything on it, Lennon begins to feel a little strange. "What's going on?" he asks himself, confused. He quickly convinces himself that his imagination is playing tricks on him and continues to over indulge. He's had a rough day, of course he isn't feeling on top of the world.

After finishing his meal he walks out of the pizza parlor and catches a glimpse of his reflection in the glass door.

What he see's horrifies him.

What is happening to his face?

He runs home straightaway, panic growing by the second. He can hear his heart racing in his ears each time his feet hit the sidewalk, he runs faster than he ever thought he could.
Meanwhile in the Stalinksky household, Grace and Autumn settle down for an evening in front of the television with a DVD of their choice.

Of course it's ''Mama Mia'' yet again, their favorite movie.
Before the title screen even starts rolling they are suddenly interupted.

"MOM! Mom! What's happening to me? Help me Mom!!"
"Oh good heavens Lennon!!! What on earth....what....what the.....wait right here!!!" "I need an ambulance right this minute, my son needs to get to the emergency room immediately. His face has swolen up like a balloon! Please, come quickly!!" "Mommmmy, he's frightening me, what happened his face??? Is he turning into a monster??? He's scarinnnnnnng meeeee"

"Autumn! It's me! It's Lennon!...Stop it, stop crying, it's me - your brother!!"

And right then, for the first time in his life Lennon knows how it feels.

He knows how it feels to repel others, to be made a spectacle out of solely for how one looks, to be looked upon with disgust. He has done it to other people many times, but now he knows.

He finally knows.
3 long hours and a vast number of tests and probing later, the Stalinsky's finally recieve the verdict.

"Lennon, what we've found out is that you've taken an allergic reaction to anchoves. Often they are found on pizza's. As you mentioned, that is what you were eating when all of this... unpleasantness.. came about.

The good news is that you are out of any danger, you're going to be fine...."
"..and the bad news? Is, well, you are going to look like that for up to six weeks, possibly longer. You're also likely to develop a lisp temporarily due to the swelling in the mouth. And your body will remain swolen around the stomach as though you've gained a sudden ammount of weight''

But don't panic. You WILL, eventually, resume your normal appearance"
"Ma'am please! There must be something you can do!", his mother pleaded.

"My son looks hideous for crying out loud

................ no offense, son.

He graduates in five weeks! He has prom! He can't look like THAT in his photographs!"
"Forget it Mom, come on, let's just go home. I want to go to sleep and forget this day ever happened....I don't care about my dumb prom photo's or anything else, all I want to do is put a paper bag over my head to hide me from the world. I'm repugnant..." "Oooh, speaking of photographs, that reminds me. Stand there Lennon. I need to take your picture for our national medical journal. We like to document extreme cases. Give me a smile and try to look your best then, lot's of people are going to see this in the medical world! Here comes your 15 minutes of fame, buddy!"

As if things weren't bad enough already, insult was added to injury. He wished a hole would open in the ground and swallow him up right there where he stood.
Soon a week passed since that dreadful day. Lennon's morning routine no longer consisted of admiring himself in the mirror; he couldn't bare to look at himself now.

Instead he spent his days sulking on the sofa, stewing over what had happened to him and wishing desperately to return to his old self.
His Father had become tired looking at him lying there like a lump of lard every day as he passed through the livingroom while leaving for work.

"Okay son" he began, "this has gone on long enough, get up. It's been a week, you have to go back to school today. I'm not going to argue with you, go and get a shower and get dressed while I have breakfast and I'll give you a ride to school on my way to the restaurant. I don't pay your school fee's for you to lie on the sofa all day like a deflated beachball! Come on. Get up, now!"
"Dad! Gee'z. LOOK at me! Would you show your face outside if you looked like this? Naw I don't think so. Gimme a break!" "Lennon! You are GOING to SCHOOL and that's that!

Nobody will even notice what you look like! You're overreacting!"
"Nobody will notice? Nobody will notice?? Dad...it's HIGH SCHOOL. Everyone will notice!"

Lennon begs, he reasons, he yells, but his pleas fall on deaf ears. It's useless.

He is going to have to show his face in public again, whether he likes it or not.
The walk into the hallway was a few yards but it felt like a thousand miles. Thankfully he was late for school and nobody else was there. Or so he thought.

"...Lennon?...Where have you been...you've been missing for days?"

Her voice was just a whisper. She was the very person he wished never to see him in this state. He couldn't even bare to turn around and face her.

"Zara just...just go, okay? We're not even together now, why do you care where I've been? Please, just leave me alone. Go on.." he responded with a heavy heart.
Zara was a stubborn character, but so was Lennon.

She refused to move until he spoke to her. He, in turn, refused to speak to her.

They could stand there til the death, but eventually someone would have to give in. One of them would have to back down, they couldn't both win this battle of wills.

Eventually and after much thought Lennon decided to cut his losses. She would see him eventually anyway. It might as well be sooner rather than later, he finally decided.
How will Zara react to the drastic change in Lennon?
