Chapter 3:

Having finally found the courage to turn around and face his ex-girlfriend, Lennon is met with a horrified gasp.

Zara wasn't used to seeing him like this. He was always such a goodlooking guy, full of confidence to match. But now? Not now. He was a shadow of his former self; unsightly, meak, deflated.

This wasn't the Lennon she knew at all.

Chapter 3:

Having finally found the courage to turn around and face his ex-girlfriend, Lennon is met with a horrified gasp.

Zara wasn't used to seeing him like this. He was always such a goodlooking guy, full of confidence to match. But now? Not now. He was a shadow of his former self; unsightly, meak, deflated.

This wasn't the Lennon she knew at all. "I...I...need to get to class Lennon, sorry...I need to go"

As Zara flees at the sight of him, he feels at his lowest yet. Life has changed so drastically for him in such a short space of time. "Well, well, well...Lobster-lips-Lexi, huh, isn't that what you used to call me?

Now who has the lobster lips, huh Lennon?"

A voice appears behind him, ready to rub salt in his wounds. "Do you think this is funny Lexi? Get lost!" he snaps.

She waves her hands delightedly. Karma has finally come back around.

"Funny? Funny? No, man. I think it's dang HILARIOUS! Look at you! Oh how the tables have finally turned. Oh how they've turned!!", she laughs, a hearty delighted laugh.

And she wouldn't be the last person to do so... Lennon's first class that day, geography, was a nightmare. He was met with laughter and taunts, followed by more laughter and taunts, right throughout his class. Feeling increasingly self concious he was glad to see the lesson end.

Tate & Lennon had been friends for a long time, or so he had thought.

"Tate buddy, are you still up for going to the Madison Arcade over lunch hour? I hear they have a couple new racing games installed?". He knew some time with his friends and a bunch of video games was bound to cheer him up, at least momentarily. "Uh...uhm....erm....Lennon. There's no easy to, um, say this" Tate stuttered. "But, there are girls there from the Lady of Lourdes school. You might...you know..they won't wanna hang out with us if they, well, see you...

Don't be upset, it's just that I don't have the same appeal with the ladies as you do, well, did, you know my track record, and there's this one real sweet girl who I really like..." "I get it, Tate. You're embarrassed to be seen with me. Save your breath man, you don't have to explain"

Lennon was crushed inside. He tried to put on a brave face, but in reality there was nothing to smile about.

He felt betrayed. The O'Connor triplets were known far and wide in the East Calderwood community for a number of reasons. None of them positive.

Not because they were triplets, and the only ones in the school, but because a person could smell them before they saw them. There was the added factor that their mother still picked their clothes for them.

They were an unpopular bunch to say the least. "Geeee'z! Look! Look at him! Look guys!", yells the eldest brother by 6 minutes, he stares in disbelief.

He has just caught sight of Lennon, one of his arch enemies. Lennon could never resist but to make the boys lives a misery.

 "Hi guys. What's up?" Lennon tries his luck. Perhaps the boys will befriend him. He has nobody else left right now, after all. Maybe they will forget all he's said and done in the past. The O'connor triplets are better than nobody, he reasons with himself. Will they take pity on him?

A simultanious chorus of ''get outta here's'' quickly answers his question.

Even the most unpopular guys in school don't want to know him. Things are not looking good. After a night of feeling sorry for himself, Lennon convinces himself the next day will be different. He goes to school early and heads for the gym for boxing practise. Everything will be okay after all, that's what he tells himself.

Surely he will be accepted here, he has to be. He is their best athlete.

Sport was always his forte. It always had been, and once again would be a solace for him. He couldn't have imagined the fury he was going to be greeted with as he went through the gym doors. Inside the hall the boys talk amongst themselves while waiting to get started with their practise.

"Word has it that Stalinsky is gettin' thrown off the team'' one says to the others. They nod in agreement, they've heard the same thing.

Their coach is far from impressed with him, evidently. Unknown to Lennon, his days as East Calderwood's champion boxer are numbered. "Alright!", the coaches voice booms, "enough of the chit-chat, gather round here and let's get started, let's see if we can salvage this mess!!

Who's missing? Let me guess, oh, it's Stalinksy!! Surprise, surprise, surprise!" "I'm here Coach. Sorry I'm late, I could find my gym kit..." "SO. The wanderer has finally returned. Finally recovered Stalinksy? Finally quit sulking about your swolen face and decided to come back to the real world? Well it's too late!

That week you just took off to cry like a little baby about your precious face, do you know what you cost us? Yeah that's right. Wednesday was our big match. Our big match against SOUTH Calderwood. The big match we'd been training for for months, and YOU.WEREN'T.THERE!!" "Wow coach I'm so sorry, I forgot all about it. My head was all over the place, I took an allergy to anchovies and..." Lennon protested.

"You forgot? YOU forgot? Well forgot isn't good enough!!" the coach barked, his face seething with rage. "We lost! Not only did we lose, we were a laughing stock. East Calderwood hasn't lost a match to South in its 32 year history. You let us down. You let us all down! Your team was depending on you, while you were whining at home about your stupid face, South Calderwood wiped the floor with us!!

Just get outta here. Go on! I can't even bear to look at you!" "Coach, please. You can't do this to me. Please, boxing is all I have left now. Don't do this'' "GET.OUT.STALINSKY!"

"But, but, but Coach?"

"You have 5 seconds to get out of my sight, son! And I mean it! You let us down when we needed you most, get outta here and don't bother to ever come back! There's no place here for people I can't depend on! 5....4....3...".

The coach meant business. Just as he thought things couldn't get any worse, they did.

His coach and his teammates were disgusted by him. Everyone was, it seemed.

Later that day:

"Lennon? Is that you honey? How was school today? Any better than yesterday?", his Mother asks with concern. "Let's see Mom. I got called all the names under the sun, you name it, they called me it. Yeah. Pretty much another normal day in my new life. Oh and I'm not on the boxing team anymore but I really don't even wanna talk about that. Now if you don't mind, I'm going upstairs to bury my head in some comics and loud music..." "I do mind, Lennon. You're not going upstairs to read comics and wreck your eardrums, you're going to Pearl Ocean Island with your Father, sister and I for the weekend. It's been months since you've joined us in our holiday home and we think it'd do you the world of good to get away from here for a few days.

Go pack your stuff. I don't want any arguments, just go do it. We're leaving tonight"

Upon noticing that her son is falling further and further down in the dumps, Mrs Stalinsky knows it's time to take action. Lennon loved Pearl Ocean Island as a child, she knew him better than he knew himself right now. It was the best place for him. "Whatever, I don't care anymore. If you want me to go to Pearl Ocean Island, fine. People stare at me here, they'll stare at me there too, it'll be no different, but I guess it beats staring at my own 4 walls all weekend. Call me when we're leaving"

And so he agrees to go, reluctantly none the less, off he goes to pack his suitcase. The Island was a place of great beauty and tranquility, skies shone blue each morning and brought with them the promise of a warm sun-filled day ahead... ..stars sparkled high in the night sky like sequins... ..fire flies danced and fluttered amid the trees, content in the simplicity of their existence.

Would Lennon finally find enlightment here? Would he finally find some solace? And finally that light at the end of the tunnel he'd been so desperately searching for lately?
