Sims 3 Custom Paintings with EA Meshes

I will show you how easy it is to make your very own custom painting by your favorite artist using one of the very lovely frames that already exists in your game.

What You will Need:

• TSR Workshop (8.7 or latest release)

• Graphics editing program (I will be using Photoshop CS3 (a good working knowledge is a plus) or the program of your choice.

• DDS plug-ins for Photoshop, current version (installed)
(http://developer.nvidia.com/object/photoshop_dds_plugins.htm). Gimp and Paint Shop Pro also have plug-ins available on the internet.

• Good quality image of your choice or you can use mine. Just right click and save it. But, I do ask that you only use it for tutorial purposes as I’ve already uploaded it for publication on TSR.

I’ll be using one of my favorites, The Waterlily Pond with the Japanese Bridge, 1899 by Claude Monet.

Section 1 - Creating a New Project

We’ll start by opening Workshop (WS) and clicking on Create New Project

In the Create a new project screen select Object and then click Next

You will now find yourself on the Object Clone screen. In the Object By Category section on the left, select Décor/Wall Art. You will see workshop display all the paintings in the game. Remember the only paintings available to clone are the ones with a frame. I’ve selected the Painting still life for my painting. Click Next and you’re on your way.

At this point the Project details screen will pop up. Here you will type in your Project Name, Title and Description. When you are finished with all of your information go ahead and click Next

Your project has now been created and we are ready to customize it. As you can see from the screenshot, your project is opened on the Project tab. It’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with all the sections. It’s in this tab where you can change your project name and description if you find any mistakes and in game categories.

When you’re finished with the Project tab go ahead and click on the Textures tab. You will see a dropdown box called Variation. If you click on it you will see exactly that, how many frame variations (colors) this particular mesh has. There are 3 for the Painting Still Life. Make sure the first one is selected and move on to the next section.

Great tutorial. This will be my first custom object for Sims 3. I've taken it a step further and instead of having the same picture for each variation, I made multiple pictures, giving me a single package with multiple paintings (and thankfully, frames are CAS-able, so you don't need to make different frame variations). I just wonder if the sizes increase dramatically.

A mini-tutorial: At the "variations stage", select each variation except the first one and delete them. Then import a picture for the first variation as normal. Then COPY the first variation, and import a second DDS (a different painting). When asked, say "NO", and it will create a second variation with a new texture. Create as many variations as you want, importing as needed. I'm not sure if there is a limit on variations... I've tested it, and it works \:\)

On Nov 11, 2009 HKMark wrote:

@Fergus333I had the same problem, but have now fixed it. I was trying to edit the exported file using Paint.net, but did not have the same NVIDIA DDS Read Properties box open as in picture 4 on page 2 of the tutorial. I'm no expert, but I guess because the image was not opened in the default size, it didn't subsequently save in the default size, and could not therefore be re-imported successfully to the Sims 3 Workshop. So I tried it using Photoshop Elements instead. Again the NVIDIA DDS Read Properties box didn't show when opening the exported file. The image opened fine but that magic dialogue box didn't show. So I opened any image and clicked "File/Save As/.DDS" in Photoshop Elements which brought up the NVIDIA dds Format box (see the bottom picture of P.2 of the tutorial), and I clicked on the "Read Config..." button. This brought up the magic NVIDIA DDS Read Properties box, and I checked both "Load Using Default Sizes" and "Show this dialog" and then clicked "OK". I then cancelled the save and closed the image. After that when I tried opening my exported image in Photoshop Elements, the NVIDIA DDS Read Properties box opened correctly, and the rest of the process as described in the tutorial worked fine.I was not able to find a solution using Paint.net because the dialogue boxes were different.Hope this helps.

Hi, Robin and thanks for the tutorial. I made a collection of pictures using it, but they didn't all turn up in the game despite all appearing as Installed Items. So I guess there is a limit to the number of clones you can use. I'm going to try the solution set out by garbuckle3000 above and hope that solves the problem. Thanks again fro sharing your hard work with us all.

For those of you using Paint.net to edit (like me) I would recieve the "Error when loading preview. Index was outside the bounds of the array." when importing back. The way to fix this is when exporting choose these options: FileFormat - DXT5 (Interpolated Alpha) and check the box Generate Mit Maps. The rest of the settings at default should work.

Thanks again!

Index was outside the bounds of the array." when importing back. The way to fix this is when exporting choose these options: FileFormat - DXT5 (Interpolated Alpha) and check the box Generate Mit Maps. The rest of the settings at default should work
OMG! I did it! Thank you so much for this tut and the advice "TheSImpsons101". It was driving my crazy trying to figure out why the Paint.net would import it! YAY!

Help i am stuck.
Using Paint.Net, lastest release. the .dds is bundled with it as far as i can tell.
i start new project in tsr, pick a frame and export it to a folder on desktop, as a .dds file
i then open paint.net, press open file, find the picture and open it, and then nothing.
i don't get that "NVIDIA DDS Read Properties box."
been looking high and low for it, what am i doing wrong?

Thank you for the tutorial. I have a question, though. Why aren't the large paintings in the wall decor list? Such as the large green painting from HELS and the long + large Late Night painting? And what about paintings from Pets? I would so much like to use all those large paintings, instead of medium and small. Thank you.

I still haven't figured out how to use CC paintings, though.
