. . . . there was a general air of rushing about . . stable boys and grooms dashing here and running there, some with every appearance of great excitement, others more nonchalant. The horses' breath fogged in the early morning chill, shod hooves striking sparks from the cobblestones as they milled around while the two ostlers settled them in their harness. Commands were given in low voices, but they were barely necessary. These animals were seasoned carriage horses - they knew where they should be and it took very little more than a hand on a rump or neck and they moved into place. The carriage had been prepared for a long journey and, even in the dim light from the lamps, it's high sheen was visible. His Lordship was off to the City this morning, to return with his new bride in a week or so, and his staff had done him proud.
At that moment the Royal Mail Coach came thundering into the Mews. . . . it was running an hour behind and the driver was already calling for his fresh team, even before the old coach had rocked to a stop. . . . there was no time to lollygag around the master's carriage - some of the drivers could be a trifle testy so early in the day and that whip had a long reach! . . . besides, the Mail must get through and always had priority, so men and boys set to with a will. Since there were no travellers on this run, in no time at all the fresh horses were wheeling the coach around and setting off at great pace for the next staging post. . . . . . . . just the start of another day at Pennington Mews.
. . and only a memory.
There is no longer a cobblestoned stableyard at Pennington. In fact, there are no stables at Pennington. All the horses are gone. They have been gone a very long time. Progress and the passing of years has obliterated their traces. The nucleus of Pennington House itself is still in there somewhere, it's yellow sandstone walls standing the test of time - but the Mews was roofed over generations ago; many extensions were added, some were removed, some didn't survive the elements - until all that really remains of the old Mews today is a small garden retreat in the centre of the 'new' Pennington Mews.
Ah! the new Pennington Mews. It's just a name now - just something to give a semblence of grandeur to otherwise ordinary lives. It could just as easily have been called Pennington Close, or any one of a dozen other grand sounding adresses so sought after in today's real estate market; but Pennington Mews it was and Pennington Mews it stayed.
Pennington is a 4 bedroom family home - actually, 5 bedrooms if one counts the nursery - and one should! It's occupant is a VIP after all. Of the bedrooms, 3 are doubles and the other is a twin single. The master bedroom has a walk in robe, leading through to an ensuite bath. In total, there are 3 full bathrooms and a half-bath in the nursery - something of an innovation perhaps, but well received from all accounts.
The kitchen occupies the space of the orginal. It therefore has an agreeably generous floor space by today's standards, or indeed by any standard - and has all the mod cons considered necessary. An island bench provides casual meal seating for 4, but there is also a more formal diningroom in an adjoining alcove with seating for 6. A door in the rear of the kitchen leads out to the garden 'retreat' . . . a small fountain and comfortable seats are here to be enjoyed. A brick landing surrounds the sunken garden and provides entry, not only to the master suite and the twin bedroom, but also to the outdoor BBQ area at the side of the property. Here will be found a gas barbeque, picnic table and a porch swing with a difference! This one is slung from the sturdy limb of a handily situated black gum.
And there you have it! Pennington Mews, circa 2010.
Special Notes: One item sourced outside of TSR won't appear in the thumbnail credits. The backless shower came from HugeLunatic at ModTheSims [www.modthesims.info/] and credit is given.

I have had to settle for 3 bathrooms! There is a option for 3-1/2, but when I update the page, the box goes blank. Every time. Rather than leave it at that, I've entered 3, which is happily accepted!.
