Hi all! Thank you everyone for your very kind comments on the first part of this story. I hope you enjoy this second installment just as much... Reaching the top rung of the ladder, I shook off the excess water dripping down my body. Swimming is, and always has been, the best outlet for my wavering emotions. I am never quite content, what with unhappiness and soul searching often clouding my optimistic outlet on life. But as soon as I dive into the pool, with the water caressing my skin and the pure silence reverberating through me, I finally feel at peace. It cannot always last as long as I wish it would, though.
"Mrs M?"
Turning, I met Lucy's gaze. "Yes?"
Looking flustered, she replied, "We require your assistance inside as soon as possible."
"Of course, Lucy," I said calmly. "I shall be there in a moment."
After she turned and rushed back inside, I let out a long sigh. Every Christmas was the same; the hustle and bustle of preparations, everyone stressed and frustrated, and something always went wrong. Yet it was meant to be a happy occasion... The next day I woke drowsily. It was Christmas day. All I wanted to do was wrap myself in the sheets and sleep all day. That was my idea of heaven. I knew, though, that I had to get showered and dressed and head outside.
Just like every other morning for the past year, I was grateful I had the room and en suite to myself. Julian and I no longer share a bed, much to our relief. For the first four years of our marriage, we had felt compelled to pretend we were just another married couple...happy in love. Nothing could have been further from the truth.
I must be honest, though. We did share several intimate nights together at the beginning of our marriage. No humans are perfect and we all have our needs, including Julian and I. I am just so grateful I never bore his child. If I had, I would never have forgiven myself. To bring a child into a loveless marriage, as my parents had done, is a crime to the innocent, little soul which is born, and I could not permit it. Now there could be no chance at all of that happening, thank heavens. I sleep in the main bedroom on the bottom floor; Julian sleeps in one of the bedrooms upstairs. The decision to separate our sleeping quarters had provided us with the perfect solution. Whilst family and friends are none the wiser of our situation, we can spend most of our time apart. After a shower, feeling refreshed and ready for the long day ahead of me, I headed outside. Immediately I was encircled by the Christmas atmosphere. A dreaded, yet necessary, occasion.
As it was only 9am, I had a few hours yet before our guests started arriving. My father, Grace and Brian, and Julian's parents were all expected around noon and probably wouldn't leave until late tonight. Oh, the joys of family, I thought sarcastically.
In need of breakfast, I walked towards the kitchen and was greeted with a plate of pancakes. I thanked the young maid and took the plate outside where I could have some peace and quiet whilst enjoying the beautiful morning. Half an hour later, with a stomach full of pancakes, I was surprised to see Lucy walking towards me.
"Lucy! You were meant to be taking the day off to see your family," I exclaimed.
"Yes, I know," she replied, unfazed. "Mr M called me last night and asked if I could come in today."
I frowned. "Julian? Why ever for?"
"He said he didn't want to wake you, that there was a problem with the business. He took the first flight out to America very early this morning," explained Lucy. "He's not sure when he'll be back but definitely not for a couple of days."
"Oh," was all I could manage. What had happened, I wondered, that it could be so urgent?
Lucy continued. "He also wanted you to know that his parents won't be attending the lunch today as they have decided to accompany him. He does apologize." She was obviously feeling awkward being messenger between a man and his wife.
I smiled. "That's not a problem. Thank you for informing me."
For the remaining hours before my family arrived, I continued to wonder what had happened in the business that it was more important than Christmas.
Right on noon, the doorbell rang. Shaking thoughts of the business from my mind, I told myself it wasn't my problem.
"Merry Christmas, father," I greeted politely after opening the door.
He leaned in to place a kiss on my cheek. "Merry Christmas, Charlotte."
It was half an hour later before Grace and Brian arrived. After letting them in the door, I led them through to the living room, where our father was waiting. Grace looked around expectantly.
"Where's Julian?"
Of course. I knew it was coming.
"He's had to fly to America urgently for a business matter," I explained in a matter-of-fact voice. "He sends his apologies for his and his parent's absence today."
Grace looked devastated for a moment before pulling herself together.
"Oh...well, I hope it's all ok. Do you know what it was regarding, seen as it was so urgent?"
I restrained myself from rolling my eyes. "I'm afraid not," I replied. "I'm sure he'll be back before we know it."
Sitting down together for a delicious looking lobster lunch, it seemed strangely quiet. I could not remember a time when it had been just us four at Christmas lunch. Julian had always been a prominent member of the family on these occasions, boasting of his recent successes in all areas of his life. Grace, too, could usually be heard chattering excitedly, mostly to retain her dearest Julian's attention.
The thought almost made me want to vomit.
"The lobster is just beautiful, Charlotte," Brian stated, breaking the silence.
I swallowed the mouthful of food I was chewing and nodded. "Yes, the cook has done an amazing job."
"It's a little too salty for my taste," Grace had to interject. Just to be different.
No one said a word for several moments, and even then only small talk resumed.
It was 7pm before I had finally said good bye to my family and seen them out. It was quite early compared to the Christmas celebrations I was used to, yet I still stifled a yawn. There was hardly a noise in the big, two storey house I called home. All the maids had gone home after cleaning the lunch dishes to spend what was remaining of the day with their families. I was completely alone. Not wanting to be alone in such an open space, I made my way to my bedroom. Not bothering to change into my pajamas, I laid fully dressed above the covers. It wasn't long before my mother entered my thoughts. It was almost like a ritual every Christmas.
What was she doing right now? Had she had more children? Was she spending time with them right now? Was she thinking about me? And more importantly, did she miss me as much as I missed her?
All these questions flooded my mind.
Sitting up, I decided enough was enough. I needed my mother more than anything I had ever needed before. She was the key to my happiness and I would not rest until I found her. Any relationships I lost along the way weren't worth my time. Slipping into my pajamas at last and loosening my hair, I was startled to hear the doorbell. Who could be visiting at this time on night on Christmas Day? I was all alone...but the image of my mother pushed me to the front door. Miracles do happen, after all. Opening the front door, I came face to face with a blonde haired, gray eyed young man with a mouth full of perfect teeth.
"Merry Christmas," he said, his voice full of kindness.
I was surprised to see this stranger on my doorstep but returned his smile. "Merry Christmas to you, too," I replied. "I don't mean to be rude but...who are you?"
The stranger let out a deep, husky chuckle. "I would be surprised if you didn't ask. A beautiful woman like yourself can't afford to be letting strange men in, especially when you're home alone."
My heart began beating very fast. I felt very vulnerable standing there in my pajamas, home alone and talking to a man I didn't know. How did he know I was home alone? Was his visit innocent or did he have sinister intentions in mind?
