A thoughtful and family-friendly restoration of the abandoned Abbey at Montefiore.
Sufficient of the old sandstone bricks were salvaged - after cleaning and resizing - to restore a portion of the ancient Abbey of the Solitary at Montefiore.
Some of the outbuildings remain - the winehouse - with it's underground nectuary - and the potting shed are pretty much original in location and space, but the stables have been reduced to a couple of looseboxes and a feedstore, with the remainder of the old stable and carriagehouse converted to a 2-vehicle garage.
The main buiklding is now a 3-storey structure, incorporating many of the rooms of the original; enlarging some and amalgamating others. The roofline is therefore
rather eccentric.
The ground floor comprises a compact and convenient layout for everyday living. All wall and floor furnishings are deliberately light in colour to further enhance
the feeling of space. Here can be found livingroom, morning or sunroom, kitchen with dining area, master bedroom and the main bathroom. Large fireplaces are a feature in both the livingroom and the bedroom. A hot tub and wetbar are located off a short hallway at the end of the diningroom. The rear door also shares this hallway.
Up one flight and there are two single bedrooms [furnished for boy and girl, but easily adjusted to suit] which share a roomy full bathroom. The gallery surrounding the stairwell has been utlised for quiet pursuits - there is an easel, a draughtsman's table and a telescope on one side. a small study nook and a chess set-up on another.
One further set of stairs opens into what could probably be called the 'noisy' area. Here is the perfect practice space for the buddng band, but also a stereo system for more classic listening. This floor also includes an exercise zone . . . treadmill and weightbench provided. A full bathroom rounds out the facilities on the third floor, but there is room for quite extensive expansion on this level, still under the existing roofline.
In closing it should be mentioned that there was found to be a major error in the drawngs used during the re-construction of Montefiore. Not so much a structural error as an error of judgement The beautiful windows in the room designated 'morning room' looked out on the bare, brick wall of the stables/garage- across a distance no wider than a gardenpath. What to do? Too late to change anything architecturally . . . . then at long last, the builder himself was able to suggest the solution - a trompe l'oeil on the offending wall.
After a short search, suitable artwork of a fernery was used, surrounded by a pair of pillars, joined by a small fountain, some hanging pots and a narrow flowerbed . . and lo! the morningroom has it's view!
Meet Montefiore, version 2 - set for another century or so of solid protection.
