Blaze slumped down on the bed, "Is that what you want Samantha? To throw away our relationship because someone else has the nerve to interfere?"

"Blaze, I.."
"I don't know what I want." I scratched my head, "I just want to be happy, and lately I'm just...not."

"You aren't happy?" he layed back on the bed, "that's why I want to get away from this place, so we can be together and I can make you happy."
"Why can't we do that here?" I asked crossing my arms.

"Because, well...because of Gary and Angie," he gestured toward their room again, "I can't live near them anymore, I don't want anything to do with them."
I let out a large sigh, "I don't have time to talk about this anymore. I'm already late for class."

"Fine," he said, "I'll see you later." Blaze then turned his back to me as I walked out of the room.
All I could think about all the way through history class was the dissalving relationship I had with Blaze. We'd never had an arguement this in depth before. We've always given-in to eachother. Scratch that, I'VE always given in.

I needed to clear my head, so I turned to the only friend I knew that would listen to me vent about all of this.
"Hey Sammie," Gary said putting down his book, "you okay?"

I shook my head, "No...I'm not okay." Tears started to well up in my eyes.

"Whoa, why don't you have a seat?" Gary said patting the other side of the bed. His face showed some deep concern.
I layed on the bed next to him and started to whimper. "Sam, tell me what's wrong," he said and then with a grin added, "I promise not to laugh if it's girly"
"I think I'm at the end of my arrangement with Blaze," the whole thing just started to pour out of me, "We had this huge fight. He wants to leave Steinhurst and move back to Alphalville where we can get married. He said that he's going to make his family insist on it."

"Hmm," he thought for a moment and then said, "Sam, what do you want to do?"
"I want to stay here. I have friends here, people I care about. People that care about me," I replied.

"Did you tell him that?" Gary asked.

"Well, sort of. But he didn't want to hear it. Sometimes with Blaze, it's his way or the highway, you know?" I sniffed.
"Well, then maybe you should end your contract. I mean, you want to finish school right?" "Gary, I can't just up and leave him. If I do I'll be no better than his first fiance. She was going to leave him almost the moment they got engaged," I said, "Not to mention you're a little bias in this situation." He laughed, "Yeah, I am a little bias. But not in the way you think. I'm just looking for happiness, just like you. It's really too bad that we are both having so much trouble finding it," he shrugged, "Plus you're really hot, who wouldn't want to be with you?"

I grinned at that last comment.
Then he scooted over and wrapped his arm around me saying, "I'm not so blinded by this crazy tradition that I've failed to see how special you are Sam. You're very special to me, just looking at you makes me happy." We sat there in silence for a moment and then... He slowly leaned over and pressed his lips to mine. I gave myself up to his comforting embrace, kissing him back for the first time. "Samantha, I've wanted to be close to you for so long," he whispered before leaning back down for another soft kiss. It wasn't long before we began surrendering to our deep desires. Gary pulled away for a moment and whispered, "Sam, we're only going to do this if it's what you really want."

I pulled him closer as we melted into this desperate love.
Afterwards Gary was brushing his lips across my forehead when we heard someone come into the room. "Oh my God, what is going on here?" screeched Angie throwing her books on the floor. "Gary..how...why?" Angie couldn't make a complete sentence. "Oh...this is totally what I deserve," she finished throwing her head into her hands. "Hey, wait..." Gary stumbled out of bed, "Angie, you're back early...um."

"How long has this been going on?" she demanded, "I thought that you and I were going to actually try to have some kind of relationship. I mean...in a few years we are supposed to get married!"
"UUUHHHAH" she let out a frustrated sound through her teeth, "I broke up with the only person I ever loved for you and this stupid tradition." "I don't believe this..." she said rubbing her temples again.

"Angie, listen..." Gary began, "I'm sorry you had to see all this. We both know that you and I could never have a real relationship. We don't even like eachother."
"Yeah, but what about you're crazy family?" she crossed her arms and grimaced, "They'll never let us out of this contract, not in a million years."

"Maybe it doesn't have to be up to them," Gary said, "I'm almost twenty-one, and so are you. It's about time we start making our own decisions."
"You mean you want to cancel our arrangement in front of the council?" for some reason Angie's face lit up.

"Well, it's probably the best thing to do, right?" Gary nodded, "We hate eachother, we'd never be able to create a good family and that's what this whole tradition is all about."
Gary continued, "You could go back to Pleasantview and find your boyfriend. You know, the one you broke up with because of me." "Hmm," she said crossing her arms and looking over to where I sat still in my underwear on the bed. She glared at me convincing me that now would be a good time for me to leave the room. I started to get dressed and try to quietly leave the room. Angie kept going, "Well, Tommy did offer to let me live with him in Pleasantview, we wouldn't have to worry about all this crazy tradition anymore."

"It's settled then, finally, I'll contact the council tomorrow," Gary said as I slipped out the door.
I spent the next several weeks sleeping in Gary's room. Angie had quickly left Steinhust after her arrangment to Gary had been cancelled. The whole time I had been trying to avoid Blaze at all costs. He seemed to be doing the same with me.

One day he walked into the study, saw me on the couch and began to leave when I stopped him by saying, "Blaze, when are we going to figure this out?"
He let out a sigh. "We can't avoid eachother forever," I continued, "We are still engaged you know." He turned and sat down next to me without a word. "Okay Samantha, you're right. We need to talk about this," Blaze started, "I have to ask you one thing though."

"Go ahead," I replied.
"Do you have any feelings what-so-ever left for me?" he asked searching my eyes.

"Blaze...." I started, "I um.."

He let out another sigh, "You're in love with Gary now. Aren't you?"

"Yeah, I guess I am," I said.
"I honestly don't know what to say, Blaze," I continued, "It just kind of happend."

"Well," he slumped his shoulders, "I guess I should tell you something then."

"What?" I wondered.

"Samantha, I've had our contract revoked. We aren't engaged anymore," he replied looking at his lap.
My heart leapt in my chest, "Seriously?" I asked. (a little more joyfully than I should have).

"Yeah, about a week ago. I talked it over with the council. They are going to give me a year to find another arrangement. Heh, maybe I'll actually find someone before I get kicked out of town," he said with a half smile. "Seems like I'm always getting the short end of the stick."

"Blaze, why did you do that?" I asked him, hoping not to hurt his feelings. After all, I still cared for him.

"I just want you to find happiness, Samantha. It's rotten that your happiness no longer includes me, but in the end I'll be alright I guess," this time he really smiled at me, but the twinkle I had come to expect in his eyes must have dissapeared along with the diamond on his finger...
