Chapter Two of the Classic novel remake: The Count of Monte Cristo. And yes, back then brain fever was an adequate disease! Forgive me for so much text to each picture, but I'm a writer...I write alot. :) Also, back then, there was a shipowner, a trade company that employed the ship, and the crew, sometimes with investors. So don't be alarmed that there are so many people "owning" or involved with the Phaeron, because that's how it worked.

In Chapter One, Edmund and Mercedes met after a long separation and renewed their love. Mercedes' mother, Collette, is trying to arrange a marriage between Count Fernand Mondego and her daughter. Mercedes, in love with Edmund, avoids any opportunity to meet the count. However, after many blissful days with Edmund, Edmund is dispatched to SimCity to bring cargo(gold) and to have the ship slightly repaired. When he leaves he tells Fernand about Mercedes, which piques his interest, and suddenly the Count wants her-mostly because he can't have her. Both men set sail for SimCity, Edmund as third-in-command, and Fernand as the shipowner.

Now, read on for Chapter Two!

Now, read on for Chapter Two!
Three days after they were scheduled to arrive, the ship Phareon coasted into the bay of Sunset Valley. Unfortunately, all who watched could tell that a melancholy air had encompassed the ship, and Morrell, owner of the trade company that managed trade goods whenever the Phareon carried them, rushed to meet the crew. However, Edmund met him just before Morrell entered the docks.

"What is it? What happened?" Cried Morrell. "Was there a storm?"

"No, said Edmund soberly. "Captain Renauld is dead. We buried him at sea just after we left SimCity. He contracted brain fever just out of the docks, and died two hours later."

"Oh, no..." Said Morrell. "Where's Danglars?" Morrell referred to the right hand of Captain Renauld, Commander Danglars.

"Danglars," Edmund began, "Did not want to turn back to get Captain Renauld help at SimCity. I attempted to turn the ship around but Danglars and I fought, but I was restrained by the men." Edmund smiled softly in gratitude, for his coworkers had kept him from punching Danglars and ruining his Naval career. "Afterward, Danglars wouldn't leave the helm, and I returned down to tend to Captain Renauld. By this time, he was dead. Danglars allowed us only an hour to put the Captain's body out to sea before he forced us to set sail again.

"If Danglars was in such a hurry," Morrell asked in annoyance,"Why wasn't he here sooner?"

Edmund suppressed a smile. "Well, Danglars isn't nearly as good as navigating as Renauld. When I realized what was happening, I told him the right direction- but Danglars ignored me until it was clear that we were nearly two days too late. Once he went in the right direction, we were back here within hours. I wanted to tell you all this to your face, for Danglars..."

"Would have embellished your mistakes. Well done, boy. Danglars is not worthy to inherit the Captain's mantle. You, however, are."

"What?" Gasped Edmund.

"You're the new Captain of the Phareon." Morrell grinned, patting Edmund on the back.
Edmund was shocked. Mr. Morrell had just passed over Danglars for the Captain of the Phareon and Edmund was now Captain Edmund Dantes.

Edmund couldn't believe it. But he hailed a taxi and as he leapt out, he saw his father tending to his garden. "Father!" Called Edmund.

"Edmund!" The old man cried. "What happened? Where have you been?" Once the questions ended, Edmund relayed the account of the trip to his father, adding that he was the new Captain of the Phareon. He also showed his father the ring he intended to give Mercedes.

Edmund's father grinned, for though Mercedes' mother Collette didn't know about their relationship, but he did. "Excellent! She's been sneaking over here to help me with my garden, or clean the house for me. She's a wonderful girl-I'm glad you intend to keep her." He looked past Edmund, and grinned. "And here she is." He slowly made his way inside the house as Edmund turned and Mercedes leapt into his arms.
Edmund relayed again how the Phareon was delayed, also adding that he was now Captain. Mercedes was sad for Captain Renauld's widow, but was overcome with joy. "This is wonderful, Edmund! My mother will view you as a man of promise and I can finally tell her about our relationship! A Captain will surely fit her vision of success!"

"How is that going, by the way?" He asked.

Mercedes looked at her feet. "Count Mondego was with you on the ship, but she wouldn't let me leave the house. I wouldn't have even been able to come out at all if she didn't own the bookstore. Whenever she left, I visited your father." She sighed. "But this news! I can introduce you to her tonight!"

Edmund grinned, fingering the ring box in his pocket. "Well, in that case, let's jump right to the next step, and introduce me as your fiance."

And Edmund got down on one knee.
Mercedes' eyes widened and she looked at Edmund in absolute surprise. When she tried to speak, only a squeak escaped her lips.

"Mercedes," Edmund began. "I'm so glad we found each other again. These past few months have been the brightest of my life. I intended to make you my wife regardless of what happened on my return, and this promotion is further proof that fate has smiled upon us." He paused for dramatic effect, and pushed as much emotion as he could into the following words: "Will you marry me?"

Mercedes nodded, unable to speak. He slipped the ring on her finger, and she fell to her knees next to him. They hugged for what seemed like an eternity, knowing nothing but each other.
Later that night, Mercedes and Edmund were cuddling in bed. They had just finished with a particularly painful display of family camaraderie with Mercedes' mother, Collette. "I don't think she liked me much," Edmund said lightheartedly.

"It doesn't matter." Mercedes replied with a smile. "I loved when you told her that Count Mondego was your personal friend, and that he gave us his blessing." She giggled.

"Yes," Said Edmund with a slight smile. "I hope you weren't angry with me for that, but it made sense that she know."

"Angry? I was elated. She's my mother, and I love her, but sometimes she needs to accept that I'm not like her." She cuddled closer to Edmund. "I have a surprise for you, by the way."

"What is it?" Edmund grinned, turning his face to hers.

"It's a surprise. I'll tell you after the engagement party."

After that, Edmund descended on her in frenzied tickles in an attempt to make her tell him , which switched into something more romantic, and the matter was completely forgotten.
In the days leading up to the engagement party, Edmund stopped by his friends' opulent home and asked him to be his best man. His reply was stiff and cold in the affirmative, but Edmund could sense something was wrong. He asked his friend what seemed to be troubling him.

"Your promotion." Said Fernand. "It's caused a few waves in the crew. I just hope that Morrell made the correct choice, because Danglars attempted to raise a mutiny about it." Before Edmund could speak, Fernand waved his hand and said, "It's taken care of. The men refused to participate and Danglars was left alone to pout about it. But Danglars will try for more trouble. I just wonder if Morrell made the correct decision in promoting you instead of him. He was obviously the next choice in line."

"But...I told you why I was promoted. Danglars lost out course and refused to let us find port for Captain Renauld. Morrell said that a Captain needs to care for his crew, and that I did."

"No Doubt of that. But Danglars told me that some of the shipment of gold from your previous voyages dissappearred during the trip. It wasn't accounted for at the destination, and Danglars may attempt to pin it on you. It would explain why Morrel promoted you- that he was bribed." Fernand glared at him. "If you did steal gold, I can protect you. For a cut."

"I didn't!" Insisted Edmund. "I would never! And Morrell promoted me on merit, not money. I would never bribe another person, and Morrell surely wouldn't even take it if I did!"

Fernand shrugged. "If you say so."

Edmund went home after that, upset by the confrontation.
While Edmund was on the ship late one night forcing the new recruits to scrub the deck with toothbrushes(as was Naval tradition), Fernand crept around to Mercedes' house. Instead of knocking and introducing himself, he settled below a window and watched her clean up after dinner, then paint on the easel in the living room.

It wasn't that he was shy, for Fernand wasn't. However, he needed to be delicate in their introduction, or else there was no hope of tearing her away from Edmund. Even if the plan he set in motion were to succeed, there was little hope she would abandon her love.

So, Fernand had taken to watching her when Edmund was gone, so he could observe her doing chores, hobbies, and miscellanous. If Edmund was there, they often were so sappily in love that Fernand couldn't help but want to vomit. So he only watched her when she was alone, or if Collette was there.

After she wentto bed, Fernand went home to do the same, his head filled with ideas of how to make Mercedes his.
The next day, Fernand was visited by Collette. He had barely climbed out of his pool before she began her rant.
"I'm trying to put an end to the engagement, but there's nothing I can do to stop her! She doesn't even care if I disown her! I had to put up with that insufferable peasant for a whole hour the other day! And you! Why did you tell him that he had your blessing? What is the meaning of this?" She paced back in forth as Fernand looked on in amusement, still in his swim trunks.

"Don't fret, milady. I meet her tonight, formally, though I have-"He decided to keep the fact that he watched Mercedes late at night a secret, it could be considered in bad taste. "Though I have decided to make her mine. There are things in motion that will make it difficult for them to continue."

"What plans?" Collette asked.

Fernand smiled, "If I told you, it wouldn't be a surprise."

Collette was downcast, and muttered. "Just do it before the stupid engagement party. I can't stand the thought of pretending to be happy about this for three hours."
That night, Fernand was invited over to Edmund's for a dinner party to introduce the bride to the best man. When she opened the door, Fernand wasted no time in speaking with her.

"What a pleasure to meet you, Mercedes," Purred Fernand Mondego.

Mercedes smiled and they shook hands, but as food was already on the table, they were separated. Mercedes giggled as Edmund nearly dropped the plate of freshly caught fish, and helped him clean up some of the tartar sauce that had splattered all over the floor. Fernand stood behind her as she did this, and admired her toned rear.

Throughout the night, when Edmund was attending to his father or Collette, or other members of the wedding party, Fernand attempted to brag to Mercedes of his money, title, standing, even his possessions. But each time, though she grew more and more suspicious of his motives, she rebuffed his interest. However, this intoxicated Fernand, and made him try even harder.
At one point, while Edmund was in the bathroom and his father was staring at a grain in the wood with fascination because his medication made him incredibly absent minded and thick in the head, Mercedes finally blew up at Fernand, though in a whisper as to not disturb the elder man.

"I don't know what you're trying to do. You give Edmund your blessing, then spend all night waiting on me and bragging about yourself and your money. If I was interested in either, I wouldn't be marrying Edmund. I'm sorry if my mother put you up to this, but I love Edmund, and no one else. I want you to be in our wedding because Edmund loves you like a brother. But please stop trying to tear me away from him."

Fernand leaned close. "You'd be a Countess if you married me. The best Edmund could give you would be fresh fish for you to clean and cook- but I have five cooks. You-"

Mercedes slapped him. "Get out." She whispered in fury.

Fernand stormed out and snapped Edmund's father out of his reverie. "What was that you said, dear?" He asked of Mercedes. "What happened to that man you were talking to?"

Mercedes sighed and buried her head in her hands.
Later that week, the two were cuddling in bed when the subject of Fernand came up. "I don't understand why he left so suddenly that night, and he won't tell me. He hasn't even talked to me much since, but he promised to be at the party tomorrow."

"Edmund..."whispered Mercedes. She wanted to tell him what had happened between herself and Fernand, but was frightened to ruin such a long-lasting friendship. Especially since he was to be their best man. But with Edmund's attention on her, she backed out and instead decided to tell him happy news instead of the sad variety, spilling the surprise she would have told him during the engagement party. "I'm with child."

Edmund blinked then grinned, and crushed her into a hug. "Oh, Mercedes. I love you. Will you want to push up the wedding?"

She smiled and shook her head. "It will be after the baby is born any way. I prefer it that way."

The rest of the night was spent in bed in passionate celebration.
Unfortunately, the next day Fernand met with Danglars in the final stages of their plan. Danglars was furious for being overshadowed by a man half his age and Fernand wanted his woman, so both men were equal in their hatred of Edmund. Danglars arrived early in the morning before the engagement party was to begin, and Fernand met him by the entrance to his estate, not bothering to invite him in.

"I have everything set with Judge Villefort. It just so happens that the gold belongs to him so he is happy to believe that Edmund took it. However, that gold sits in my cellar and for your part of the operation, you get thirty percent of the reward for finding it."

"Fifty." Replied Danglars.

"Forty." Said Fernand in irritation.

"Agreed." Said Danglars.

"You need merely go to the police and tell them that Edmund took the gold. I have hidden part of it in his fathers' house and some in Morrell's. Morrell will likely be able to bribe whatever judge he gets, but he'll be forced to take a partner in his business to keep it afloat. I, in all my generosity, leave that to you. I deposited five million into your account, and that will more than cover the legal fees that Morrell will face."

"What about you? It sounds like I do all the work."

"And you get a lot of money for it too. I've already done my part in hiding the gold in Edmund's house and paying some of your crew to witness that they saw him take it. I spent time with that horrible Judge Villefort to make everything fall into place. I deserve more money than you, because I gave you the money to buy the partnership on top of the reward Villefort has promised us."

"Fine,"Said Danglars, his eyes glittering with greed. "Then I'll be Captain and Partner...Or maybe just partner."

"Be what you like." Said Fernand, waving his hand dismissively. "Just go to the police now, or they'll never arrive before the party is finished."

"Why do they need to show up at his engagement party?" Asked Danglars.

Fernand's smile looked more like he was bearing his teeth than showing joy. "Because that is when he will be the happiest. And that is when we rip everything from him."
A few hours later, amidst the revelry of the engagement party, Edmund tapped his glass to get everyone's attention. He intended to share the good news of Mercedes' pregnancy, but was quickly interrupted by the wailing of a police siren. He smiled sheepishly to wait for it to go by, but it stopped at the curb, followed by another. "What on earth?" He said to himself. He set down his glass and walked to the curb.

Mercedes ran out from inside the house as she saw a policewoman approach Edmund. She looked over to Fernand, whose acting skills only told Mercedes that he was confused and concerned.

"Edmund Dantes, you are accused of theft. I have a warrant here to search your home. If I find anything, you are to be arrested."

"Theft?" Edmund asked. "Theft of what? Search my house. You'll find nothing I've stolen, for I'm no thief."

The policewoman went inside, and two other officers surrounded Edmund just in case he attempted to flee. He called over to Mercedes, Fernand, and his other guests, "Don't worry, this is all a mistake."

However, all hell broke loose when the policewoman came out of the house with a large satchel filled with several bricks of Courthouse-stamped gold.
Edmund was immediately handcuffed and shoved into the police car, but wouldn't stop yelling that he was innocent. Mercedes and Edmund's father appealled to the officers that Edmund couldn't have possibly stolen that money, and that there was some logical reason to his having it. Fernand stayed aside until Mercedes began to cry, then rushed to her and wrapped his arms around her.

"Officer." Said Fernand, loud enough for everyone to hear. "Is there nothing we can do? Edmund is innocent!" He wore a mask of concern and fear, all for the sake of Mercedes, who continued to cry into his chest.

"Take it up with Judge Villefort." Said the officer, then walked away.

The car with Edmund peeled off and Fernand said to Mercedes and Edmund's father, "We'll go talk with Villefort as soon as I can arrange it. He is innocent! He would never steal!"

And Edmund, still insisting upon his innocence, was carried away to the jail to await his hearing with Judge Gerard Villefort.
Thank you for reading the Count of Monte Cristo, Chapter Two. It's difficult to write the adequate betrayal of Danglars and Fernand, but I figured gold and theft would be up their alley, so I rolled with it. In the novel there is a separate participant, Carderousse, but there's so many characters in the novel that a lot of them will get cut. :/

The next chapter will be out next week, and includes Edmund's trial.
