Here it is!

Here it is! "Kayla Alice Douress," he smiled, "Will you do me the honor of..."
"YES!" I screamed without a moments hesitation. He didn't need to finish his sentence- I knew what he wanted. "Oh God, yes!"
He laughed and slipped the ring onto my finger. His face glowed with happiness, and he seemed much more calm than he had 20 minutes ago. "Oh Jack, I... I couldn't have expected this in a hundred years! We've never even talked about it."
"I know. I've had the ring for months now... I just didn't know what to do."
"It's beautiful!" I felt myself starting to cry and had to somehow keep the tears back. Never had anything so wonderful happened in my life. I jumped on him and squeezed him tightly. 'I love you Jack, I do I do!"
"I'm glad," he laughed, "I love you too."
We spent the next few weeks planning and setting things up. Making invitations, deciding where to have it and who to invite. Jack tried to convince me to invite my parents, and that was the first real fight we ever had. I won without a doubt- he had no chance. There was no way i was ever going to get into contact with them if i had a choice. Jack seemed to want to do a lot of the planning himself. He insisted most of it be a surprise. Most girls, I imagine, would have thrown a fit- but i loved the mystery of it all. This was a true test of his love- to see how well he knew me and what i wanted.

The wedding date was set to exactly four months from his proposal.
About three weeks prior to the wedding, just about when Jack had finally finished booking and setting up things, he got a late night call. "Valont," He answered, " Yes sir. I thought that Fred..." A pause for an interuption, "Well that's not what i was told. Yes. Yes. No Sir. What? Uhhmmm," he glanced at me, "I'm not sure I..." The voice on the other side of the phone became louder, but unclear to me. "I'm sorry, sir. Yes." He sighed, "I'll be there tomorrow. You too, good night, sir."
He hung up the phone with a sigh and glanced back at me.
"I have to go up to base. Tonight"
"There's been an explosion and a lot of the planes have been damaged and need immediate repairs."
"But you said tomorrow."
"It'll take me all night to drive up there."
"No one else is up there to help?"
"I thought Fred was supposed to be up there this weekend, but apparently he's on vacation!"
"I don't want you to go," I crossed my arms.
"I don't really have much of a choice..."
He kissed me lightly.
"I'm gonna go pack some things."
When the taxi pulled up he hugged me.
"Don't worry, it's only the weekend. I'll be back Monday night."
He kissed me goodbye and left.

I hadn't slept alone in months- not since he had his last call to the base. It felt so empty and cold in the house with him gone.
I went for a swim -early- the next morning before work. I was hoping it would wake me up a little from my lack of sleep last night. When I got home from work around noon my phone rang before i even had a chance to change my clothes. I'd gotten into a bad habit of not looking at the ID before i answered my phone.
"Hello?" I asked with a yawn.
However sleep deprived i was before, I'd never sleep again with the adrenaline running through my system now. This was a voice i hadn't expected to hear, one I'd tried to forget about.
"Kayla?" The voice asked again, "Kayla Douress?"
My mouth went dry as i tried to answer, but i felt as if i was choking on my air.
"Yes," I finally choked out, "yes, it's me..."
