Elanor spent a few more days alone in her house before a single thought about venturing outside even crossed her mind. She was getting tired of daytime T.V, and she longed to wear something besides track pants.
Sam's number sticking out from a magnet on the fridge had caught her attention several times, but she hadn't gained the courage to call him yet. Maybe tomorrow, she said over and over again, and it never happened.

One particular day she stumbled down the stairs during the early afternoon hours. She flopped into her armchair by the T.V and turned on the romance channel, as if to remind herself of her late husband.
a guitar serenade filled the air, coming out through the surround sound speakers that Kyle had set up. Elle sighed, everything reminded her of him. She just needed to get away, even just for a night.
She stood up and rubbed her neck. Sam's number was on the fridge. Did she dare call it?
What would people say? Dating so soon after Kyle's death? What would Kyle think?
Every part of her brain yelled 'No', but her heart was saying something different. Sighing, Elanor relented to the tugging inside her chest and crossed to the phone in the kitchen.
She picked up the handset and, with a shaking hand, dialed his number.
Pressing the phone to her ear, she listened to the gentle ring coming from the other end of the line. She kept her breathing steady and closed her eyes in concentration. She couldn't freak out when he answered.
Finally, a distracted voice answered. "Hello?"
Elanor swallowed. Summing up all the courage she could muster she answered. "Hi."
Silence passed between them before Elle blinked herself back into reality.
"Hi, it's me. Elle... from the grocery store."
"Oh," Sam said, stuttering a little. "H-hi. How are y-you? "
Elle laughed a little. "I'm OK."
"Listen," she said, cutting to the chase. "I was wondering if your offer still stands."
Sam was quiet for a while. Then he answered. "You want a date?"
Elle shivered, looking down at where she used to wear her wedding ring. "Yeah," she said softly. "Yeah....I'd like a date."
Sam smiled. it was practically audible over the phone. "Great," he said. "I'll see you at six. At that Bistro by the grocery store."
Elle hung up the phone, grinning ear to ear. She raced upstairs to her dresser. She was back in the game again. Now all she needed was something to wear. Six o'clock rolled by and Elle's taxi pulled up at the Bistro. She leaped out of the car to find Sam saving her a seat at an outdoor table. She felt alive again. Adjusting her dress, she bounded through the bistro gates and took a seat across from Sam.
"You look amazing," he said, admiring her beauty.
She blushed under the candlelight. "Thanks."
She picked up a fork and poked at the food on the plate in front of you.
"I ordered for you," Sam said, noticing her expression. "I hope that's OK."
Elle lifted a forkful of food to her mouth and tasted it. "Mmmm...." she said. "This is great! What is it?"
Sam chuckled. "I'm not actually too sure," he replied. "It was chef special. They said it was good."
Elle grinned. "It is," she said.
"So," Sam said, swallowing a mouthful of food. "What made you change your mind?"
Elle shrugged. "I don't know. Meeting you the other day..... it made such a difference. You really cheered me up."
Sam nodded.
"I guess," Elle said, looking down at the candle flickering in the glass jar at the center of the table. "I just needed someone like you." She smiled and something in Sam's eyes glittered.
"Do you believe in fate?" he asked quietly.
Elle thought for a second. She nodded. "I believe we all have our destiny... that we live to fulfill."
Sam smiled. "Me too."

Elle finished her meal and a passing waiter took her plate.
"Come on," she said. "Hurry up and finish. There's somewhere I want to take you."
"Wow," Sam said, staring out at the empty beach in front of them. "This is beautiful!"
Elle squeezed his hand. "It is, isn't it?"
He nodded and turned to face her. "Why did you bring me here?"
She looked at he white sand around her. "Kyle brought me here after our wedding." The memory made her sad, but she didn't feel like crying anymore. Suddenly, she felt happy again.
"I felt like I should share it with you. Like it was fate..."
Silence filled the empty beach, and the couple paused for a few moments.
"You don't think we're moving too fast?" Sam asked cautiously.
Elle shook her head. "This is perfect," she said, feeling herself falling for him even more.
Sam smiled. "Does this mean you'll go out with me again tomorrow?"
Nodding, Elle reached for his hand. She looked deep into his eyes, and slowly they each leaned forward, sharing a kiss under the starry sky.
