Eliza sits down at an available park seat and places her laptop on the table. Even on her days off she is working. She's got a presentation to give at work on tomorrow afternoon and has been putting it off for the last couple of days.
Working for a major corporation has it's benefits, a comfortable salary and wonderful travel opportunities. But it also has it's downfalls, working long hours and putting in 110% all the time.
With dusk setting in Eliza makes a few last finishing touches on her presentation.
She lets out a small sigh in relief as she pushes her laptop closed. Happy to have completed her task she heads home for dinner and a night in front of the TV.
Casually waking up the next morning to the sunlight streaming through her bathroom window Eliza takes a glance at her alarm clock. It reads, 8.40am.
"Darn it" she says jumping out of bed.
Eliza has never been late in the 6 1/2 years that she has worked at Doo Peas Corporate Towers and being the disciplined person she is she doesn't intend on this being the first.
"No time for a run this morning" she thinks rushing off towards the shower.
Pushing the chest draw closed, she grabs her favorite lipstick and quickly applies a smudge of color. Rushing over to her beside table she splashes on some perfume.
"Hmm, is there time for a coffee?" she asks herself grabbing her watch off the table.
Remembering before she went to bed last night that she added fresh coffee beans to the espresso machine, she decides that there is time for a coffee. Adding more milk than usual she downs her coffee as quickly as possible while still trying to enjoy it. Arriving one minute to nine she brushes away a few spots of lint from her black skirt and faces the working morning with a brave face, ready and prepared to give her presentation. After staying back at work for an hour Eliza stops by the book store on the way home to grab a new recipe for dinner.
Walking up to the entrance Eliza stops for a moment as she smells the aroma of a man's cologne. It's a musky but sweet smell and it makes her feel light on her feet for a second.
She can't remember the last time that the smell of a man's cologne made her feel like this. She looks around but can't see anyone so proceeds into the book store.
Throwing her new recipe, and a few other books she decided to buy, onto the passenger seat she starts to drive off. She see's a man staring at her on the side of the road and looks back in the revision mirror. He crosses the road so she thinks nothing of it. Arriving home Eliza takes a warm bath and changes into something comfortable. Eating dinner at the kitchen counter alone she enjoys the peacefulness of her home after a hectic day at work. Putting her dinner dishes in the dishwasher she retires to the lounge to watch her usual romantic channel. Pulling her legs up onto the couch she leans back and relaxes for the night. As the credits roll up the screen scenes from the movie run through her head almost taunting her of what she doesn't have.
The last man she went out with was much too clingy for her. Always calling her at work, coming over unexpected. She's not asking for much in a man; someone who is loving, handsome of course. A free spirit is what she likes.
Thinking that she'll be unable to sleep tonight Eliza grabs a bottle of wine and a glass and wanders out onto the balcony.
She pours half a glass and takes a small sip. The wine is cold and tastes fruity. Looking through the telescope she wonders if there is such a man out there for her.
Watching the sun rise the next morning his thoughts are flooded with her pretty face. Who is this young woman that he saw the other day in the park?
Why can't he stop thinking about her?
Most women approach him, due to the size of his yacht, but he knows what their intentions really are.
He doesn't know how or why but he thinks that this young woman might be different.
After taking a shower and having a quick breakfast he decides to explore the town a little bit. Riding all the way up into the hills of Sunset Valley he locates the waterfall that he saw when sailing into town. Finding the best spot right next to the waterfall he applies some bait to the end of his line and casts out. The fresh water here is alive with fish and it's not long before something takes the bait.
Bending his knees to compensate for the pull on the line he reels in his catch.
Holding up a medium Tuna, he admires the fish. Gently taking the hook out he places it in the esky he brought with him. Speeding down the hill with his esky full of fish he sees a clearing on the right hand side and thinks that this would be a nice place to live if he were to live on the land again. Dropping off the fish he caught this morning at the market he walks out onto the street and glances towards the local restaurant. He see's the same young woman he saw the other day seated at one of the tables outside. He walks a little closer and stops at the curb.
Why would she be sitting alone? he wonders.
A girl like that would definitely have a male companion, he thinks.
His thought's are interrupted by a woman speaking behind him. Turning around he notices how this woman is dressed. Skin tight dress, heels, bright red lipstick. Not exactly the attire you would wear grocery shopping.
"Oh, hello" the young woman says smiling seductively while taking a step closer to him.
"Err...hi" he replies unenthusiastically.
"I saw your wonderful boat when I was sun baking at the beach the other day. You might have seen me, I was wearing a yellow bikini..." she pauses to see any recognition on his face, "...anyway, I think I saw you looking looking towards my direction and well I was thinking..would you like to go out for dinner one night or maybe we..." she continues to babble on for several minutes.
He dazes off for a moment thinking that the women who approach him are all the same, always straight to the point. What ever happened to getting to know someone these days.
She flutters her eyelashes at him, " what do you think?"
He breaks from his daze and laughs uncomfortably, "Um..actually I'm really busy, so maybe some other time."
"Well I'm always free, so here's my number...I'm Bebe by the way" she says grabbing his hand and placing a small piece of paper into it.
Watching her walk off he feels a little taken back by how quickly she moved in on him. He looks at the phone number on the piece of paper. If he were into one-night stands then maybe he'd consider calling her. His best mate Connor would defiantly take up the offer, maybe he'll pass her number on to him. Enjoying a light lunch at her favorite local restaurant Eliza scoops up the last of her Key Lime pie onto her fork. Just as she's placing it into her mouth her mobile phone rings. Eliza says a muffled hello into the phone.
"Hi honey, it's your mum" replies the voice on the other end.
"Hey mum. How's things?" Eliza asks her mother even though she knows what this phone call, like every other one, will be about.
"Everything's good here honey. Your father has taken up another hobby, it's collecting would you believe? I honestly don't know where he's going to put all these rocks & pieces of metal he finds" Eliza's mother says hastily.
"Well that sounds like fun, maybe you should go collecting with him?" Eliza replies sarcastically.
"Ha, never darling! So how's work? Are you still seeing that lovely man...what was his name?"
"..Thornton Wolff" Eliza says finishing her mother's sentence.
"..yes that's it! Well how is he and when are you two..." Eliza annoyingly cuts her mother off.
"...ah, mum, we haven't been together for several months now. Remember? I already told you?"
There's long pause before Eliza's mother starts talking again."Well, come on honey, your not getting any younger. You should be married with kids and a...."
"Mum! I'm not going to explain to you again. He just wasn't the right man for me. Look I've gotta go...I've got...a lot of work to do. Give my love to dad, I'll come and visit soon" Eliza abruptly hangs up the phone.
Feeling slightly irritated Eliza hears someone calling her name.
"Eliza? Hello?" says the woman.
"Oh..hi..Jocasta" Eliza says startled.
"Are you alright?" Jocasta Bachelor asks.
"Yes..fine, fine" Eliza says trying to shake off the conversation she just had with her mother. "How are you? How's the family?"
"Everyone is well, although we haven't been into town lately due to the recent burglaries. They say that it could be the drifter?" Jocasta says suggestively.
"The drifter?" Eliza asks puzzled.
"Oh, you haven't heard, well there's been 3 at the theater, the book store and another at the Day spa. The sheriff said he's been keeping an eye on things but apparently they don't have any leads yet" Jocasta smiles knowingly.
"So what about this drifter then?" Eliza asks curiously.
"Well people are saying that it could be him doing the burglaries. We don't get many new people in town, you know that, and it seems like such a coincidence that all of a sudden we've had these burglaries and he is here at the same time and..." Eliza lets Jocasta' voice trail off. She knows better than to listen to Jocasta' gossip, after all she is the town's queen of dirty laundry. Although she is right that they don't get a lot of new people in town.
"Eliza, do be careful won't you? I've seen you running late at night after I pick up the kids from their swimming lessons" Jocasta says in a motherly tone.
"I always am. Thanks for your concern though" Eliza replies knowing that she is quite capable of looking after herself.
"Maybe I'll bring the kids over for a visit. You must get lonely living up on the hill top by yourself?" Jocasta says gently probing for information.
"No, I have plenty of things to keep me busy. Speaking of busy, I've got to call by the office on my way home so I'd better get going. A visit from the kids would be if I'm home, maybe call before coming over" Eliza says smiling, starting to walk off.
"Of course. Take care then" Jocasta replies.
Driving by the office on her way home Eliza can't help but think what Jocasta said about the burglaries and the drifter that's in town. Who could he be?
She did see a young man yesterday afternoon that she hadn't seen before.
With her curiosity aroused will Eliza investigate a little further or leave it up to the sheriff of Sunset Valley?
