Hello there and welcome to Part 4 of the PlumbBob Quest. Thanks for all your lovely comments, hope you enjoy this part. Now on with the story! The next day, we arrived at Whitworth University and asked for directions. We soon found Dr Quackenbush leaving the library. "Hello, are you Dr Avalanche Quackenbush?" I asked politely. "We would like to talk to you." "We want to study physics too," Jasper added. Dr Quackenbush cheerfully showed us to the cafeteria where we sat down. "What is it you would like to know?" he asked kindly. "Could you please tell us about your work on the virtual reality theory with Dr Jenkins and Dr Hogg?" Jasper requested. Dr Quackenbush stiffened. He sat there, rigid, and said finally, "How do you know about that?" "A banned book," I explained. "Well... I have nothing to say on that subject. If, however, you would like information about what qualifications you -" "We don't want to be study physics," Jasper interrupted. "At least that's not what we came to you for." "We want to know about your work on the virtual reality theory," I said slowly and firmly. "We've been doing research and we want to know the truth," Jasper explained. "Please," I added softly. Dr Quackenbush sighed and glanced around. Then he stood up. "Follow me. We have to move to a quieter place." We followed him to an empty section of a computer room. We all sat down at a table together and eventually Dr Quackenbush said,
"You don't want to get involved in this."
"We have to know," I protested. "We have to know if our entire lives are being controlled. It wouldn't be fair to let us live our lives always uncertain if someone is directing our every move." Dr Quackenbush gave us an ominously dark expression and said finally, "Listen. Listen to what happened to Dr Jenkins and Dr Hogg. If you want to know the truth, listen to the consequences." "The young Dr Jenkins had a theory that the world was a virtual reality. Dr Hogg and I, Dr Quackenbush, were his assistants. "We helped him research and conduct many experiments. "But we discovered something terrible. "I tried to stop him. I tried to tell him that it was dangerous and it wasn't worth the risk. "Jenkins said to me, 'Don't you want to find out why you're named 'Avalanche Quackenbush'?'" "'I just assumed that my parents had extremely bad taste.' "But he told me that wasn't true. 'No! There's a reason. The same reason why she's called Ima Hogg. A reason for everything! Haven't you ever wondered?'" "I told him, 'Well, yes, of course...'" "And that was that. My curiosity got the better of me and I agreed to help him with his experiments. "We discovered that our world is, indeed, a virtual computer game. "We put forward our discoveries, even though we were terrified of them. "But Ima Hogg couldn't live with the knowledge that someone might be controlling her and she lost her mind. She was eventually put into an asylum. "As for Dr Jenkins and I, the university tried to cover up our discoveries. They knew that what we had proved would cause mass hysteria. They wanted to keep the research from the public in order to prevent the madness that would follow from those who believed, and the ridicule from those who didn't. They refused to publish our findings. "But Dr Jenkins wouldn't give up. He thought he might have found a way to be released from their control, and he believed the people had a right to know the truth. So he was fired and banned from teaching at universities or any other schools. He was almost arrested. "I was an up-and-coming young scientist. I was afraid of losing my position like Dr Jenkins so I agreed to keep my mouth shut in exchange for keeping my job. They gave me a raise too. "I couldn't forget about the virtual reality theory, but there was nothing I could do about it. That was years ago. I haven't seen either Dr Jenkins or Dr Hogg since." Jasper and I gaped at him for a long time. Finally Dr Quackenbush spoke again.
"Now you know what happened and you know how dangerous your discoveries are. I am warning you. You should forget about it all."
"We can't do that!" I exclaimed. "Not now!" "Dr Jenkins said he had a way to be free," Jasper agreed. "We can't give up!" Jas composed himself before asking, "Do you know what he discovered to become free from their control?" Dr Quackenbush shook his head. "He discovered that alone. He never had a chance to tell me or Ima, since Ima was in an asylum and he was banned from the university. But I suspect he didn't discover a way at all, he simply said he had in order to reassure everyone that the situation wasn't hopeless. And taking into account what we discovered, I don't think becoming free is possible." I glanced at Jasper. We both knew what the next step was. "Do you know where Dr Jenkins is now?" I asked. "No," the doctor replied, his voice becoming stiff and cold again, losing the tinge of concern and possibly panic that had crept into it when he told his story. "Are you sure you don't know where he lives?" Jasper insisted suspiciously. "It sounds like you were friends," I added. "And you don't know?" "We haven't spoken in years," Dr Quackenbush replied frostily. "He has probably moved by now. He might on Twikkii Island for all I know." "Well, can you tell us where he lived when you were still in contact?" Jasper pressed. Dr Quackenbush sighed.
"Young people are so stubborn nowadays. I'll tell you, but remember, I am in no way responsible for what happens to you... "
