Dream as if you'll live forever, live as if you'll die today.
-James Dean
"Oh come ON!" I moaned to myself. He was waving around my camera. I decided I had two choices: 1-Turn my car around and grab my camera, feeling like an idiot, or 2-Keep driving and make forgetting my camera an excuse to see him. I decided with choice number two. When I got home my dad was browsing the computer for who knows what and my mom had fallen asleep on the couch while watching the cooking channel. I smiled to myself and walked over towards her. I glanced at her stomach, still trying to convince myself she was just gaining weight. I walked upstairs and painted for a while, then went in my room and finished my book, "My Name Is Memory". I'd been reading the book for a week and was so glad to finally finish it. I put the book back in its case and put a red sticker on its spine, something I do to every book I finish. I sat on my bed and stared at nothing. I was wondering what I should do now, since I wasn't in the mood for anything and my stomach felt queasy from the previous moment with Ben, when my phone rang extremely loud and I jumped. I ran to the other end of my room and stared at the caller ID, not recognizing the number. "Hello?"
I heard silence on the other end.
Someone cleared their throat, and then my ears tingled as Ben spoke.
"Naomii? Um, this is Ben. You, uh, left your camera here."
"Yeah I noticed. Could you hold onto it for me and then I can just pick it up next time I see you?"
"Sure. Just call me if you suddenly need it."
"Okay. Thanks. Bye."
I hung up the phone then threw it on my bed, thinking about how stupid I sounded. I wondered if he felt like he had sounded stupid, which was ridiculous because his voice was amazing. He couldn't sound stupid if he tried. I sunk into my bed and tried to take a nap but ended up walking downstairs and watching TV.
We ate dinner, my mom washed the dishes and my dad announced he was going for a late night workout. He kissed my mom on the cheek and was out the door. I sighed, extremely bored, then went upstairs and stared into the distance off the balcony. I loved this part of the house, mostly because I was the only one who really went up here and you could see all of our backyard. I lit the two pink candels and sat down, staring at the flame flickering back and forth. I watched a stray cat chase a squirell up a tree. It stared up at the tree, bathed itself then ran after a moth. I stared at the flower bushes that were swaying in the wind and would of fallen asleep there if my mom hadn't walked out. I flashed a smile at her. "Hey. I was just about to go to bed." I lied. She closed her eyes and sighed, holding up a hand to stop me before I went inside. "Naomii, we need to talk." "Okay. Sure. Whatsup?" I asked.
"Before I tell you, I want you to know that I love you and so does your father. We always have and always will, and we won't forget you just because of this...change."
I felt panic close my throat and my shoulders tense up. "You and Dad aren't getting a divorce, are you?"
She laughed, and I felt a bit more relaxed. "No no, we aren't getting divorce. I think we'd die if that happened." She sighed again, and held up her hands. "Thats not it. But Naomii..."
She drifted off and I was starting to get worried. "Mom?" I asked.
"Naomii, you're going to be an older sister."
I opened my mouth, but nothing came out. I just stood there in shock.
" don't...."
"I know this is kind of sudden but it's the truth. I'm pregnant."
" and Dad always said you just couldn't get pregnant, that you guys just couldn't seem to...Mom, how??"
"I don't know honey, just by God's miracle I guess." I smiled and hugged her. "I'm happy for you. And I'm excited to be an older sister." She hugged me back. "Good. Now you go get some sleep." She patted me on the back and went downstairs. I stood there, still in shock, then jumped and squealed. I couldn't contain my excitment. I called my best friend, Annabeth, and told her. She screamed with me and we talked for a while, then I headed off to my bedroom.
I took a quick bath and slipped on some lavender silk pajamas. I put my hair up in a bun and rushed under the covers. I was thinking about whether the baby would be a boy or girl and what we would do together when I fell asleep. I opened my eyes and noticed I was back in the fancy blue bedroom. I moaned and looked around me. Hilary was playing a game of chess on the computer. I got out of bed and walked over towards her. "Oh come on!" she complained and struggled to find the next move that wouldn't get her killed. "Hey." I said. "Whatcha doin?"
"Playing online chess with Andy."
"Who's Andy?"
She looked up at me. "Are those pills still making you loony?"
"Probably." I shrugged.
"Okay....Andy's my best friend. Oh yeah, he also wanted me to ask if he could come over and hang out for a while. So can he?"
"Uh, sure. I don't think we're doing anything today."
"Thanks. He'll be over in 2 hours."
"Yeah. And thanks for telling me ahead of time."
"Sure thing."
"Where's Benjamin?"
"Downstairs. Making soup I think. But he probably burned it."
I laughed and grabbed some clothes from the dresser then changed into decent clothes and did my hair in the bathroom. I walked out into the hallway, noticing there were a lot of doors. Ignoring the petty though, I headed downstairs and into the kitchen to find Benjamin staring into a microwave.
"Hey." I said. He looked at me then smiled.
"Why hello there. At least you remember how to get dressed." I laughed then walked over towards him and stared into the microwave with him. "So whatcha makin?" I asked.
"Burnt soup."
"Mmmm sounds amazing." I said standing up straight. I walked over to the island counters and sat in one of the bar chairs. He sat right next to me. We sat and talked for a couple minutes, and then the microwave beeped. He got up and examined the bowl, then smiled. "Okay, I know it was your favorite, but I messed up and made normal soup on accident."
I laughed, then ate the soup as he put it in front of me. He sat down and watched me eat. I pushed the away once I was halfway done, feeling pretty full. He smiled then stood up. I was going to go upstairs to check on Hilary when he grabbed my arm would have kissed me, but I put my hand in between our lips. He looked puzzled. "Soup breath." I explained. He laughed. "I don't mind. I like chicken noodle soup, and I love you. Twice as good." He kissed me before I could laugh. We stood there kissing for what seemed like hours when the doorbell rang.
I opened the door to a little boy with dirty blonde hair and bright hazel eyes. Before I could even talk, he started blabbing away. "Hey Naomii! Sorry I'm an hour early, but my mom has a doctors appointment later so she had to drop me off now. I probably shoulda called but hey, you guys don't mind. Do you? Because if Hilary isn't here I can walk home. might take a while but I don't mind. I like exercise. Do you need me to go ho-"
"Hilary's home." I interupted. "HILARY!! YOUR BOYFRIEND IS HERE!!" I screamed up the stairs. I smiled at Andy. His cheeks were red with embaressment and I laughed. Hilary stomped down the stairs. "He is NOT my BOYFRIEND!! He's just my friend!!! So shutUP!" She complained. Ben waked over towards me, trying to hide his smile but failing missrabley. "Come on Andy, let's go upstairs." Hilary said. She flashed us a look behind her back as she made her way up the stairs. "You two behave now!" Ben teased. Hilary rolled her eyes at us and ran upstairs with Andy. Ben and I started laughing histaricly as soon as we heard the upstairs door close. "You know, we should stop teasing her." I told him.
"What fun would that be?"
We walked to the couch and Ben flipped on the TV. A horror movie was on SciFi, and nothing else good on, so we watched the shopping channel. Ben scooted closer to me and put his arm around me. I shifted into his side until I was comfortable. I looked up at him and smiled, he smiled back. "So what do you want to do today?" He asked.
"Anything as long as I'm with you."
He squeezed my shoulder. "How in the world did someone like you end up with someone like me?"
"I know. You're so much better than me."
He laughed. "You know what I mean."
"Yeah..." I said. We were quiet for about 15 minutes, but it wasn't an ackward silence.
"You know, I was thinking-"
"Well that's a change." I interupted.
He laughed. "Anyways, maybe we should buy some new furniture. It's pretty...empty...compared to our old house. Maybe we should go get some new stuff while Hilary's at school tomorrow."
I gave it some thought. "Sure. Why not?"
He kissed me on the cheek and I snuggled closer to him. We spent the next couple hours just talking and kissing. Not a bad life, I thought.
I stood up and decided to go explore the house a little more. I found that we have 4 rooms upstairs, me & Ben's room, Hilary's room, a workout/hangout room, and an extra bedroom. Every room upstairs has a small patio. I was exiting the patio of our room when all of a sudden I got very dizzy and my vision went blurry. I put the back of my hand on my foreheard and almost fell back, but I caught myself. Ben walked in the room. He was smiling but his smile faded when he saw me. He rushed over to me and put his hands on my shoulder. "Baby, are you okay? Naomii, look at me. Talk, please talk. Your white as a ghost." He put his hand on my forehead and I tried to talk but I just got dizzy again. "Oh honey, you're burning up. Come on, lay down. Can you talk?" I was going to shake my head no but my vision went blurry again and my eyes fluttered close. I saw darkness for a long time then heard the faint sound of music. "Who...what..." I tried to talk but could still feel my head spinning. The music got louder and louder untill I realized it was my cellphone. I shot out of my bed and looked around, holding a hand to my head. "Oh crap!" I mumbled. I ran to my cell phone, which was still ringing loudly, and answered it. "Hello??" I asked. I heard a mumbled voice on the other end. "Ben?" I asked. "Hey Naomii." His voice was faint and sounded scared. Then again, I probably sounded just the same. "Hey. What's up?" I asked.
"Hey...and nothing much just...well...a little weirded out..."
"Oh. So let me guess you-"
"Had the dream. Yeah yeah yeah. Look, I'm still kinda freaked out about this all. Do you want to come to my house later and talk about it?"
It took me a minute to realize what he just asked.
"Well?" He asked.
"Oh. Um, sure. What time should I come over?"
"How about noon? You could have lunch with us."
I didn't even think about it. "Yeah that's cool."
He gave me directions which I wrote down and then we hung up. I stared at the note for a minute, then danced around happily. I put the note in my purse, showered and put on a dress that I haven't worn in a really long time. It was pretty short and black with silver/blue flower design on it. I slipped on a pair of flip-flops to make it look more casual. I stared at myself in the mirror, happy with my makeup and hair, then turned lefts and right to make sure I looked okay.
I turned on the fireplace and read a book for a while, but I ended up hanging around the house chatting with friends on my cell phone and watching TV until it was around noon. I jumped off the sofa, ran upstairs and grabbed my purse. I left a note on the fridge for my mom to say I was out and about, that I had my cell phone with me. She was still asleep, and I didn't think much of it. I turned off the fireplace. I made sure every small amber was burned out before I left. I grabbed my car keys and drove to down Maple Road, past the Middle School, then turned left three times. Just like he had told me. When I got to the house, I couldn't believe my eyes. His house wasn't huge like a mansion, but compared to my house it was pretty big. I grabbed a piece of gum out of my purse and started towards the door. Before I could knock the door flung open and I fell forward a bit. I looked up to find Ben with a toothbrush hanging out of his mouth and night clothes on. He looked at his watch and rolled his eyes. I tried my best to hold back my laughter, but as soon as he went in the bathroom I busted out laughing. Without anything else to do, I sat on the far left side of the couch. A woman in a walked into the kitchen a couple minutes later. She was wearing a white and pink nightgown and her long, blonde hair was in a ponytail. She had green eyes like Ben. Before she was through the archway that led to the kitchen, she stopped and turned around. "Hello. Um...who are you?" she asked.
"Hi," I said standing up, "I'm Naomii. I'm Ben's friend."
"Well hello Naomii. I'm Constance, Ben's mother. Would you like something to eat?"
"No thank you. I already ate at my house."
"Okay. Well, I'm making some brunch. It should be done in about 20 minutes. Come on in if you want."
"I will. Thank you."
She walked out of the living room and into the kitchen. A few minutes later, Ben walked back out of the bathroom wearing a red shirt with a plaid button up shirt (which was unbuttoned to show the red shirt) and jeans. "Sorry. I didn't know it was already noon." he said as he sat on the other far end of the couch.
"It's okay. I might have been a little early."
"No, I was just late."
"Again, it's okay."
He looked around confused. "Do you smell...eggs?"
"Oh, yeah. Your mom is making some food. I'm guessing eggs?"
"PANCAKES, EGGS, BACON, WAFFLES, SAUSUGE, AND OMLETS!" I heard Constance yell out of the kitchen. Ben rolled his eyes and stood up and held his hand out to me. "Come on, let me show you around." I took his hand, probably blushing, and followed him upstairs. He showed me through the house until we wound up in his room.
"Whoa." I said. His room was cool, but it wasn't amazing. It had a bunch of drawers and shelves and most of them had junk on them. He had a TV hanging from the wall near the ceiling and an Xbox underneath it.
"Take a seat." He said pointing to a polka dot beanbag on the other side of the room while he flopped on a blue one. I dragged it over a little closer to him and threw myself into it. He flipped on the TV and changed it to some action movie. "So I'm guessing you had the dream?" I asked after a long, awkward silence.
"Yeah. Did you have it?"
"Well...not last night but earlier this week, yeah."
"I just don't get it. What the heck does it mean?"
"I'm not sure. Maybe we're just crazy."
"Oh well I've known that for a while."
I laughed. "Well what do you think it means?"
"I don't know. Maybe we are crazy."
We were silent for a long time, but then I saw him look at me out of the corner of my eye. I looked at him and we stared at each other for a while. I looked away, and he did too.
"So..." he broke the silence, "Do you have a job?"
"Yeah. I work at the spa."
"Do you like it?"
"Well the customers are nice...sometimes...and I'm starting to get used to the heavy smell of perfume and nail polish. So I guess it's okay. Better than my old job."
He laughed.
"Do you have a job?" I asked.
"Yeah. The bookstore."
"Do you like it?"
"It's pretty quite. Not a lot of people read anymore, so I only get a couple customers."
"Wow. I love reading. I've been in the bookstore a couple times, but I've never seen you there."
"I work a weird schedule."
"Ah. I see."
Another awkward silence.
"Well I should probably be going soon." I said and started towards the door.
"Wait." He said and cleared his throat.
"Are...are you doing anything tonight?"
"I don't think so. Why?"
"Well, I was you maybe want to go to the movies with me?"
I stared at him in shock. "You mean, like, on a date?"
He blushed. "Yeah, pretty much."
I smiled. "I'd love to."
"I'll pick you up. Where do you live?
I gave him directions to my house and told him that he could come over around seven. He walked me to my car. I turned on the engine and smiled at him through the open window. "See you at seven?"
"See you at seven."
I backed out of the driveway and waved at him goodbye through the back of my car. When I got home, my mom was watching the cooking channel on TV and writing down the recipe. She looked up at me and smiled. "Hey you. What's with the big smile?"
I realized that I had been smiling ever since Ben asked me on the date. "Oh, um..."
"It's a boy isn't it?" she smiled deviously.
I blushed. "Yeah. He asked me on a date tonight. Can I-"
"Oh honey!" She paused the TV and walked over to me. "I'm so happy for you! What's his name? What does he look like? Is he nice?"
I laughed. "You sound like some actress. His name is Ben. You'll meet him tonight at 7. He's picking me up and we're going to the movies."
Me and my mom talked some more, then she went back to her TV. I walked upstairs and looked through my closet and dressers to find something to wear, and I eventually settled on a sleeveless polka dotted dress with a belt around it. I put on a pair of wedges and polka dot heart earrings, along with a couple of bracelets. I brushed my teeth until they were whiter than ever and my breath was minty fresh, then combed my hair until it was ultra shiny and silky smooth. I looked at my clock, realizing it was only 5:30. I sighed and watched some TV with my mom until my dad came home, which was 30 minutes later.
"Hey." He said. He laid his jacket over a dinning chair then looked at me and raised an eyebrow. "Well well, why are you so dressed up." Panic rose in my throat and I didn't want to tell him. I looked at my mom desperately. He took a cup and filled it with water then started drinking it. Bad timing dad...I thought. "She's going on a date tonight" my mom said. My dad chocked on his water a bit, then looked at me. "What?"
"Oh, don't make a big deal out of it Daniel."
"Who with?" he ignored my mom and walked closer to us.
"Benjamin." I said.
"Who's he?"
"You'll meet him in an hour. He's picking me up."
"Where are you going?"
"The movies."
"What movie."
"I don't know."
"Okay..." he said. He still seemed unpleased though. He walked into his room and I sighed once the door closed. My mom patted my knee. "Don't listen to him. You look amazing. He's just trying to protect you."
"Yeah I know. But still, he shouldn't worry. Ben's really nice."
"I believe you." she said. My dad walked out in normal clothes and watched TV with me while my mom made dinner for just her and dad.
I looked at the clock realizing it was 6:50, and I kissed my dad on the cheek and ran upstairs to fix my hair and makeup again. I looked at my clock, and the exact moment it turned 7:00 the doorbell rang. Wow, I thought, when you say seven you mean seven. I straightened my dress, took a deep breath, and walked downstairs. My dad was talking with Ben, and he didn't seem to hate him at all. He actually seemed to like him, but he tried his best not to show it. Ben was wearing a Abercrombie long-sleeved button-up shirt with aqua, navy, and orange stripes with grey pants. He looked amazing, and compared to my dad, who was wearing jeans and a t-shirt, he looked really stunning. He looked at me and smiled. "Hey." he said and walked towards me. "You look great." my dad coughed and I glared at him, then looked back at Ben and smiled. "You look great too. Come on, let's go." I said. He held out his hand and walked me to his car. It was an Infinity convertible, which made me wonder just how rich he was. He opened the door for me like a gentlemen and closed it, then went to the driver's seat. "Be back by eleven!" My dad told us. My mom hit him playfully and waved at us through the door. "Have fun!" she told us. As soon as we were out of their sight, I sighed loudly. "Sorry. My dad's kind of...well...protective."
He laughed. "Ah, don't worry. He wasn't a total jerk or anything. He didn't go right up to my face and say 'Hey, I hate you, and I don't want my daughter seeing you, bla bla bla'"
I laughed. "I'm surprised he didn't."
We came to a red light, and he smiled at me. "You look really amazing."
"Thank you. You do too."
We didn't talk too much on the way to the movies. When we got there, it was almost empty. "Well that's weird." Ben said.
"Usually on Friday nights people are crowding the movies."
We bought two tickets for an action/comedy, got two small drinks and a medium popcorn, then took our seats. It was a casual date. We held hands every once in a while, but we didn't kiss. After the movie, we were talking and laughing about who knows what.
He looked at his watch. "We still have two hours to kill. Do you want to go home?"
"We do?" I grabbed his arm and looked at his watch. "Wow you're right. Well, no I don't want to fo home. What do you want to do?"
He thought for a minute, then said "Wanna go to the park?"
I smiled. "Sure."
We hung out at the park for a while, just acting like little kids. We tried going down the slide, but it really isn't made for anyone over 10. So I sat down on a swing and before I knew it Ben was pushing me and we were laughing. We hung around there for 30 minutes, then Ben had an idea.
"I want to take you somewhere." he said
"It's a surprise."
He made me keep my eyes close as he drove, then we walked up a big hill, my eyes still closed. My shoes clacked like they were going up stone, and it reminded me of the stone sidewalk that lead up the hill to the telescope. "Please tell me we aren't going back to that telescope." I said.
"I wouldn't go back there if it was the only place in the world that wasn't covered in boiling lava."
I laughed. "Okay, good."
He led me further up the hill then stopped. "Okay open your eyes."
I did and caught my breath. We were at a lake on an extremely high hill and I could see the whole town. I looked up and the stars were brighter than ever. I looked at him. "Where are we?" I asked, stepping closer to him.
"I don't know what it's called. But it's a hill behind my house." he pointed to the left. "See?"
I looked at saw his house, standing there tall and proud. I smiled. "Why did you bring me here?"
He smiled back and slowly wrapped his arms around the middle of my stomach, making me nervous. "Naomii, I know we practically just met, but I feel like I've known you forever. And I really like you."
I blushed. "I like you too, Ben."
"Do you think we should go out again? Maybe to dinner next time?"
"Definitely. I'm having a great time."
He smiled. "Let's make it amazing."
I was about to say that was sorta cheesy, but he kissed me. He had a tendency to interrupt my thoughts with kisses, but this almost made me melt right where I was standing. I closed my eyes and kissed him back. His lips were soft and tender, and his breath was just as minty as mine had felt after I had brushed my teeth. I wanted that moment to last forever, but I knew we would have to go home soon. He didn't try to go any further then the kiss, which I really thanked him for, because I don't think I want to go further than that. When we parted I put my head on his shoulder. I closed my eyes and smiled. We swayed back and forth in silence then he finally started to pull away. We were both smiling. He looked at his watch and his frown faded, and so did mine. "Time to go?" I asked.
"Yeah..." he said.
We walked back down the hill and he drove me home, and we kissed one last time and my doorstep. I walked inside and waved to him goodbye, then closed the door and leaned against it. "I love my life." I said, smiling.
