It all came back to me on the last night of Summer. I couldn't sleep. The window was open and through the trees I could see the brilliant Summer sky. It reminded me of those nights on the roof...you and your telescope. We'd dragged it up from our small garden and, in doing so, one it's three legs had torn a hole in my thin cotten dress. Though I soon forgot that when you pulled me up onto the roof with you. You'd kissed me. Our first kiss...I remember now...I remember it all...

You were such a gentleman. You never pushed me into anything and even walked me to my door at night even though there was only a floor seperating us! During the months that we dated you always refused to step into my bedroom and instead you always kissed me goodnight and went to your own room. I remember how long we dated for down to the day: 6 months and 15 days. You proposed on the 200th day.

We were married in the white little chapel on the hill a few months later, just two weeks before your regiment was called off to fight. We had a little honeymoon by the sea in a small cottage and came back home a week before you were due to leave. Everything was going so fast...
Waking up is still hard. I always expect to see you beside me, sleeping, or standing at the long window waiting for the sun to rise. Though everytime my eyes open the bed beside me is empty and the view of the bridge is clear. What's worse is that you're not with me. You're not even whistling off-key in the shower. I'm alone. I remember the morning you left. I'd helped you pack the night before but it wasn't until I saw you standing in the kitchen wearing your new uniform that the realisation had really hit me. You were really going. That was it...we said goodbye and you promised to be back in 3 months. You got into the waiting car that had pulled up outside and I watched you drive away. 'Missing in action' they'd said. I thought they'd made a mistake. You couldn't be gone. When the day you had been supposed to come back home on went past. I realised that they hadn't made a mistake and you were gone. The worst part was when an officer handed me your pack of belongings and a small grey urn. You had come home but this hadn't been the plan. You said we would grow old together and every summer we'd go onto the roof and watch the stars together. Though in a way we will, I had a bench put on the nearby hill where the clearest views are. It's dedicated to you and its where I go to sit. Its where I went to write this...
