Ava woke early the next day, a mixture of anticipation and fear of the unknown playing havoc with her stomach. She dressed quickly, not wanting to be late on her first day, and forced down some Cornflakes, despite her jittery stomach.
‘Come on, Ava. Pull yourself together. It’s not like this is your first job, anyway’, she tried to assure herself. It didn’t work. ‘Hmm, suppose it’s just first day nerves’.
Ava arrived at Cornerstone Highschool, a large multi-storied brick establishment, with no idea where to go. Thankfully the Reception was the first room located along the hallway, and an elderly woman smiled when Ava entered.
“Hello, you must be Miss Woodhaven. I’m Mrs Cornell, the principal here at Cornerstone High,” the elderly woman greeted her pleasantly.
“Yes, yes I am. Pleased to meet you,” Ava replied politely, returning the smile.
“I waited here in the Reception Office in case it was difficult to find my office on your first day here,” explained Mrs Cornell.
“Thank goodness,” laughed Ava. “I’m completely lost here. This school is so much bigger than my last!”
Mrs Cornell laughed. “I know that feeling all too well. Why don’t I show you around and introduce you to your classroom.”
“That sounds great,” replied Ava, and she followed Mrs Cornell out of the door.
Mrs. Cornell led Ava down the long, silent hallway lined with student lockers and into a generic looking classroom, nearly identical to the one Ava had taught in at her last school in SimCity.
“This will be your classroom for the entire year, so don’t worry about getting lost again,” teased Mrs. Cornell.
Ava smiled and nodded. “Where are the students up to in their classwork? Are they doing anything particular at the moment?”
“They are currently studying conventions of literature, and annotating a class novel, “Where’s Bella?”,” explained Mrs. Cornell. “I’ve taken the liberty of including everything you need to know and a copy of “Where’s Bella?” in a file, which I’ve placed in your personal pigeon-hole in the staff lounge.”
Ava sighed with relief. “Thankyou, Mrs. Cornell. I’ll get organised right away.”
“I know you will do a great job, your letter of recommendation from your previous school was outstanding. Good luck, Miss Woodhaven,” smiled Mrs. Cornell, and then she left Ava to get prepared for her first lesson of the year.
At 9 o’clock the bell signalling the start of the school day rang loudly, and Ava took a deep breath and swallowed loudly.
‘Ok, this is it. You can do it,’ she assured herself internally.
The students shuffled in slowly, yawning and mumbling to each-other as teenagers do. The eyed Ava with curiosity, and Ava smiled warmly at them.
“Well, good morning, class. It’s nice to finally meet you all,” Ava said brightly. “I’m Miss Woodhaven, and I’m your new English teacher.”

Ava’s warm introduction was met with a few mumbled greetings, but the class remained unenthusiastic. Ava bit her lip. Her previous English class had been eager to learn, but this class seemed indifferent about everything.
“Uh… maybe I’ll tell you a bit about myself?” Ava began. “Well, I’m very interested in English, and reading is my favourite past time. How many of you enjoy reading?”
Nobody said anything. Nobody even moved. Ava wasn’t sure if anyone was actually blinking anymore.
“Right. Well. How many of you enjoy English?” Ava asked.
Again, the response was absolutely overwhelming.
Ava sighed. “Well, don’t all answer me at once!” she thought.
“Ok, class. Just get out your novels and continue reading and making notes,” Ava sighed.
She sat down at her desk and put her head in her hands. “This is going to be a long year,” Ava thought sadly.
After her dismal first class ended, Ava was left to wander the hall searching for the teacher’s lounge. She wanted nothing more than to sink into a book to dissolve her anger, and knew that she had to read the class novel.
As she searched for the lounge, she was stopped suddenly by an eccentrically dressed woman with raven-black hair.
“You seem lost. Are you the new English teacher?” the stranger asked.
“Uh yeah. Ava Woodhaven. I am kind of lost, actually,” laughed Ava.
“Hey man, pleased to meet ya’. I’m Sienna Silverman, resident art teacher here in this rabbit warren,” explained the woman with a wide smile.
Sienna Silverman had an interesting aura about her. She was the kind of person who you took a liking to instantly, and her confidence was infectious and heightened your confidence instantly.
“Seeing as I’m such a nice chick, how ‘bout I show you where the lounge is. I won’t even charge you for it,” Sienna grinned.
Ava smiled. “That would be great. I could use a strong cup of coffee!”
“Oh no. What’s up? Bad class?” questioned Sienna.
“Yeah, you could say that,” laughed Ava. “My class is about as responsive as a group of marble statues.”
“Don’t worry man, it gets better. Well… sometimes,” Sienna reassured her with a pat on the shoulder. “Hey, how about you vent about it to me tonight. I know a really nice little club, and dancing is sure to cheer you up.”
“That sounds nice, I could use a good venting session,” smiled Ava.
Sienna gave her the club details, her phone number, and a time to meet that night. Then she showed Ava where the teacher’s lounge was, and some other important school landmarks such as the bathrooms and cafeteria, before leaving to teach her Senior art class.

As Ava sunk into the soft couch in the teacher’s lounge and opened her book, she smiled to herself. She was glad to have met Sienna and hit off with her so well, and was excited for her plans that night. Maybe things in Cornerstone weren’t going to be so bad after all...
