Sophia Rogers.
As a child she was always getting into messes and getting herself out of trouble. She was an only child and enjoyed every minute of it. She wasn't spoiled, but she was a little bossy.
But most of all she was well loved by her parents Travis and Brooklyn.
She was also loved by Aj Allen. A successful musician turned producer who was the best friend of her parents. But what Sophia didn't know, was that he was her real father. The three parents felt it was too complicated to tell the little girl and so they kept it a secret. Hoping to one day be able to tell her the truth. But the days turned into months then years. And soon the 6 year old child was becoming a 14 year old teenager.
Although she resembled her mother, she was beginning to show features of Aj. The ebony hair and dark almond eyes. It was so hard for Brooklyn to look at her and not think about her high school love.
Sophia was your normal teen. She had a clique of friends she grew up with in town. They were all getting ready to finish middle school and get ready for their first year in high school.
Sophia's best friend was her dog Pal Jr. He was offspring of her original dog that Aj brought when she was younger. She barely went anywhere without Jr. on her heels. Travis Rodgers had recovered from his coma and within months went back to work at the Fire Station. The family had gone into debt from paying for hospital fees and therapy bills. Brooklyn continued sculpting. Although she had given up her craft for years. The family could not afford to pay for the material so she would sculpt every once in a while. Since learning that Sophia was his daughter, Aj would send money every month for her. But Brooklyn kept the money in a savings account for her college education. She felt bad using the money for anything else. Aj was back in Starlight Shores, a suburb of Sim Angeles. He kept in contact with Brooklyn and Travis over the years. He didn't have the heart to come back to visit. He wasn't sure how he would react, so he felt it would be better to stay away. He didn't know when would be the right time to tell the little girl that he was her true father. Especially since she had grew up thinking it was Travis all these years.
Brooklyn often sent him pictures of Sophia and he watched her growth from far away.
Aj lived in a big house looking onto the town. He tried to fill it with collectables and other pieces. But the one thing he was missing was a family. The hardest thing he had ever done was stay out of Brooklyn's life. To let her and Travis raise Sophia.
No matter how much he had or people he met in the last 8 years, he was still alone.
Sophia: Please mom!
Brooklyn: What are you trying to do again?
Sophia: (she sighed) This summer, before we go to high school. Chelsea, Grace, and a couple of other people want to go California.
Brooklyn: I don't know Sophie. That's such a far place for a couple of teens to be going.
Sophia: Please mom! It's only for a week.
Brooklyn: But you all don't know anyone in California.
Sophia: Well.....we were going to Sim Angeles. I figured I could visit Aj.
Brooklyn: AJ?
Sophia: Yeah, you know. Aj Allen. Chelsea's parents are coming with us. I figured while I was in town I could visit him. It's been 8 years.
Brooklyn didn't know what to say. She began digging more in the garden.
Brooklyn: Let's ask you father
Sophia: Aww Man!
Brooklyn: Until then, come and help me.
Sophia began picking the vegetables from the garden along with Brooklyn. She hated to admit it but she did enjoy being in the garden with her mother. Besides, Brooklyn needed to think.
Travis came home as usual that evening.
Travis: And how are my ladies doing?
He kissed them both as he entered the kitchen where they were making dinner.
Brooklyn: Fine. I think there is something our daughter wants to talk about.
Travis: Oh? And what is it.
Sophia looked at her father. He was smiling back at her.
Travis: Is everything okay?
Sophia: Everything is fine. It can wait until tomorrow.
Travis: Really? We can talk about it now.
Sophia: No, I'd rather talk about it when you're fresh.
It was Saturday morning when Sophia finally got the courage to ask her father. She knew Travis was always protective of her and wanted to have a plan B, C, and D in case he asked a lot of questions.
Sophia: So dad, the girls and I thought of a fantastic way to celebrate us going to high school.
Travis: Oh! I thought about it too. I thought going to the Razzle Dazzle Land.
Sophia: Well, dad. We thought about something else. Chelsea's parents are taking her to Sim Angeles for a few weeks and wanted to invite me and a few other friends.
Travis: I don't know about that Sophia. A few weeks in Sim Angeles? Who else is invited.
Sophia went on to name the 4 other people coming. She hurried and rushed through the 3 boy names, hoping he would overlook them.
Travis: Boys? Oh no!
Travis: You almost had me. There is no way 2 adults can supervise the raging hormones of teenage boys. No. Maybe as a high school graduation gift. But right now you are too young.
Sophia: Please daddy. I really wanted to go. Besides I figured I could visit Aj while I was there.
Travis: You don't understand honey. You're too young for this kind of trip. You can always visit Aj with us. But for now, I don't want my little girl taking a trip that is just not right for her. Not now.
Sophia began to look sad. She began to use the same look on him that she had done many of times. His face softened.
He raised up from his chair. Travis looked guilty for telling his daughter no. He hated disappointing her. He kissed her on the forehead. Let me think it over a bit.
As he walked out the kitchen, Brooklyn turned from the stove.
Brooklyn: You and that look girl.
It was the same way Aj would look at her.
The next night she sat on her swing in backyard. The breeze was cool and the air smelled like grass and fresh flowers. She heard her parents talking about her hopeful trip to Sim Angeles, so she decided to wait outside as they talked. She didn't want to be tempted to ease drop. There she thought about how great her trip would be. Her friends, Chelsea's cousin, and a few other friends from the country club. Sophia didn't know them but didn't care. She was going to get out and see the big city. If only her parents agreed. Travis and Brooklyn had not come to an agreement about the trip but instead decided to wait awhile to think it over more. Besides they had three months to decide. It was hard for Travis to tell Sophia no. She was his baby girl. She little Sophita (as he called her at times).
She looked up to her father. Sophia knew he cared for her and wanted what was best. But if only he wasn't so over protective. She knew he was going to let her go. She just had to wait. It was that night when she received a call from a familiar friend.
Sophia: AJ! Mom, It's Aj!
She called her Brooklyn who was in the living room.
Sophia: You got email about the trip. You will be, GREAT!
Sophia went on to talk to Aj. Brooklyn had walked into the kitchen by then.
Sophia had explained to Aj that Brooklyn and Travis were still deciding whether she could go.
Aj: Well, should be in town around that time. The summer is a busy time for touring but I will be fine.
Sophia: That's perfect. Thanks alot. Bye.
Sophia hung up the phone.
Sophia: He told me to give you and dad his love. He said if I can't come with the girls then he would invite all of us to come later. Isn't it great?
Brooklyn: The best.
Travis had took Sophia to her favorite park as a kid. Lately when she went there with friends it was just to hang and talk.
Travis: Remember when I would bring you here as a little girl. You always wanted to swing higher than all the other children.
Sophia: Yeah. And you always did. No one could push me better than you.
Travis: You know, there are times that I wish that I could keep you that little girl.
Sophia: Dad
Travis: I know, I know. You have to grow up.
Sophia: Well if mom and you would have just had other children, you wouldn't be so worried about me all the time.
Travis laughed.
Travis: Oh I always will be.
Travis: I talked to your mom again and we decided that it would be alright if you went.
Sophia nearly jumped out of her swing.
Travis: One condition. You call us daily.
Sophia pretended to think about it. She knew there was no arguing about it.
Sophia: Deal!
They both hugged each other.
After talking more about the trip, Sophia heard the sound of the ice cream truck.
Travis: The usual?
Sophia: You know it.
Travis and Sophia walked up to the truck and ordered their ice cream. They sat on the bench together and enjoyed the treat under the sun.
Weeks had passed and the day had ended just like any other day. Sophia had just gotten out of swim practice and was riding the bus home. Aj was on the other side of the country. He had just left the studio working with a new artist. He had showered and put on some new clothes to go out. He had just finished looking in the mirror when his cellphone went off.
Aj: Hello. Mrs. Rogers?
It was Travis's mother.
Aj: What?
There was a long pause as he listened more
Aj: Where is Brooklyn?And Sophia?
It was as if his entire world had stopped. His throat was stiff and it was hard to swallow.
Aj: I'll be there. Just give me a few days and I will be there.
He hung up the phone and made a few phone calls.
Aj: I know D. But I have to go. My best friend needs me right now. I don't know how long I will be gone. You can take care of the studio time for me.
Aj made other calls for the travel back to LakeView.
Once he finished making all the calls, his thoughts finally settled. He tried to wipe the tears from his face before they could fall.
Aj: Womb to tomb.
