The beginning of a new journey:

There was a stranger at the Allen's door. The young man that stood in front of Aj and Brooklyn was like a blast from the past. Ryan Teer was the son of their late best friend Travis Rogers.
He never knew his father and was in town to find out his history. Left with nothing but pictures and a few letters by his recently deceased mother, Ryan set out to find out about his history and needed the help of Aj and Brooklyn to do so.

It was late in the morning and the young man was still sleep. Aj and Brooklyn felt sorry for the young man and allowed him to stay over the night to rest from his long trip. He planned to re-enlist back in the military so he didn't have long before he had to get back. Brooklyn had set Hannah in her chair before preparing breakfast.
The little girl began to fuss only to have her mother soothe her a bit.
Brooklyn: Now now little girl. Be patient while I make breakfast. We have a guest in the house and I want you to be on your best behavior.
Sophia walked into the room.
Sophia: Mom, is he still here?
Brooklyn: Yes, he's sleep in the guest room.
Sophia: I can't believe how you can let this stranger into our home. It just creeps me out how you two are so okay about this.
Brooklyn: Okay about what dear?
Sophia: That this guy, this stranger just walks in, says that dad is his son and you are so okay with it. Doesn't it bother you at all?
Brooklyn: Honey, we have no reason to not believe him. Travis and Betty were an item back then.
Sophia: So that's it. A letter and he is automatically Travis's son?
Brooklyn: He is not trying to harm anyone Sophia. He just has questions. He's not asking for money, just our memories and our time. No harm.
Sophia: I just don't like it.
Brooklyn: It's not for you to like Sophia. Although I wish you would just be supportive. He doesn't have anyone Sophia. Travis's parents died not too long ago and so there is no one to tell him about where he came from or who he is. To Ryan there is a part of him missing and we are going to help him as much as we can. I would hope that you would understand that.
Sophia: I just can't. The two of you are so trusting of people. He could be a con or something like that. He doesn't look much like dad anyway.
Brooklyn: Come now child.
Just as the two were talking, Aj walked into the kitchen.
Aj: And how are the three most loveliest ladies in the world.
Brooklyn: Aj, how can you be okay with this too?
Aj: Okay, just when I was beginning to be called dad. And when she's upset I'm back to Aj. What did I miss?
Brooklyn: Your daughter wants to know why Ryan is still here.
Aj: Where else is he going to go?
Sophia: Where ever he came from.
Aj: He's like family.
Sophia: He's not mine.
Aj: Sophia!?
Sophia: Well he isn't. There are people all over the world trying to make fools out of rich people with deep pockets and he could be one of them. I just don't want anything to happen to this family just because someone says he's the son of your best friend and made up this story.
Aj: You can't look at him and say he is not Travis's son.
Sophia: Plastic surgery.
Brooklyn: That's enough young lady. No matter, your dad and I have welcomed Ryan into our home. He has not asked for anything more than information about someone he has not met. He is not asking for money. You will be nice to him while he is here and that is all I have to say.
Sophie had never heard her mother be as stern as she was. She walked out the kitchen and went back to her room.
Aj looked over to Hannah.
Aj: Women.
The little girl reached for her bowl of cereal that he was holding and laughed at her father.
Ryan had come down just in time for breakfast. Afterwards he helped with dishes and the kitchen area with Aj.
Sophia noticed that Aj and Ryan were talking to the side of the room. She could barely hear what they were saying but knew that Ryan was making Aj smile.
Suddenly Aj called her over to them. She knew that tone. It only meant that she was going to have to do something. She rolled her eyes as she walked over to them.
Aj: I have some things at the studio this morning I have to do but I want you to entertain Ryan for me.
Sophia tried not to look irritated at the thought. Instead she just looked blank at her father.
Aj: Take him around town. Show him what Starlight is like in the summer. At least where all the young people hang out now. It's been a few years for me.
Sophia did was she was told and took Ryan around town. She felt uncomfortable taking the young man to somewhere private and so decided to take him to a more public place. She was going to do her own investigation. To find out more about this stranger's past. She past by all the hot spots in town and the studio where Aj worked when he was not working from home.
Ryan: Must be something being the daughter of a celebrity like Aj.
Sophia: It's something.
They parked on the side of the plaza and walked the rest of the way through town. And when it was getting a little tired, the two settled at the pond in the town park. They watched the fish swim and fed the ducks that swam nearby. It was silent, and peaceful.
Sophia: So what do you want to know?
Ryan: What?
Sophia: You have all these questions you are asking my parents? What do you want to know about Travis?
Ryan: Well, what kind of a person was he? Your mother told me they were married for some years before he died. So he would have been your step-dad.
Sophia: He was my DAD!
Ryan: Well what kind of a dad was he?
Sophia: He was the best dad a girl could ask for. He always made time for me. Took me to plays, the park. He loved me so much and I loved him. He always made me feel like I was number one.
Ryan: I saw you were a dancer.
Sophia: I took ballet until I was 13. I just grew tired of it. I wasn't going to be a professional.
Ryan: And he didn't mind.
Sophia: Not at all. He never missed a show, sometimes working extra shifts just so he could take time to come.
Ryan: Must have been something.
Sophia: He was....
Ryan: Was he funny?
Sophia: Yeah, yeah he was funny. And caring, and intelligent.
Ryan: Yeah, your mom told me about him becoming fire chief right before he died.
Sophia: He took his group to help fight in the forest fires. He always felt it was his duty to help those in need. He always believed in helping those that need it. He was my hero. (laughing) He was everyone's hero.
She started to drift as she thought about him more. Sophia couldn't remember the last time she just sat and thought about Travis and soon grew guilty that she waited this long.
She began to remember their last time together just the two of them at the park. She remembered his smile when she cracked jokes and the way his clothes smelled when he hugged her. A tear fell down her face. Ryan: I didn't mean to-
Sophia: It's time we go. I need to get some air.
Ryan: But we are outside.
Sophia: SOME DIFFERENT AIR. (she snapped)
Sorry. I know mom can answer more questions for you.
She drove him back to the home without saying another word.
Later that evening, Brooklyn sat with Ryan and looked at old photo albums of the three best friends.
Every now and then she would get a small glimpse of Travis in Ryan's smile or the way he laughed. It was amazing how he never met Travis but had so many of his ways and habits.
Ryan: Man you three were really best friends.
Brooklyn: We were. We had been friends since I moved into town when I was a little girl. They were like brothers to me.
Ryan: I still don't understand how you ended up marrying both of them.
Brooklyn: Well that is another story. So long I could make it into a book.
Brooklyn went on to explain it to Ryan. She kept out the more personable parts of the story but gave him the most important pieces.
Ryan: Man, that is a book.
Brooklyn: I love them both.
Ryan: You were just meant for Aj.
Brooklyn: Yeah. We were.
Ryan: And Sophia?
Brooklyn: What about Sophia?
Ryan: She was really close to Travis huh?
Brooklyn: They were. He was the only father she had known for most of her life. They were closer than any father and daughter I know.
Ryan: I could tell. He really means a lot to her.
Brooklyn: You will never know.
Ryan: So is she always so....so....
Brooklyn: Uptight.
Ryan: Well
Brooklyn: It's okay. She just takes a little longer to warm up to people. I think she gets that from Aj.
Ryan: I just hope she doesn't hate me that's all.
Brooklyn: Nonsense.
The two of them looked at more pictures and talked more about Travis.
The next day Ryan and Aj went to go shoot some hoops and get out of the house.
Ryan: I want to thank you and Brooklyn again for opening your home to me. I only have two weeks left before I go back on duty. It's good to spend it with people like you all.
Aj: Well, you are like family. Travis and I were more like brothers than best friends. We had been best friends since we were babies. Womb to tomb is what we would say.
Ryan: My mother said that it always seemed like it was you and Travis, then everyone else.
Aj: Well it was at times. Don't get me wrong, I love Brooklyn. But it was something about the relationship between two bros that is much different than a man and his woman.
They played a couple games of one on one before calling it quits.
Aj: I am not as athletic as I used to be. Besides, Travis was the athlete between the both of us. He was All-American. I was the singer and lady lover. Or at least one lady lover. (laughing to himself)
After retrieving the ball he looked over to Ryan.
The young man's expression had dropped. Aj could tell that he was thinking about something and took a moment before interrupting his thoughts.
Aj: You okay.
Ryan: Yeah sure. It's just everyone has these wonderful memories of him. How much of a hero he was, how great of a person he was, and yet...he is still a stranger to me. He made such an impression on everyone else.
Aj tossed him the ball.
Aj: I know if had he known about you things would have been different.
Ryan: I know. I just feel like I missed out on so much. I hope you don't mind, I am going to take a walk.
Before Aj would say anything else, Ryan left the court and began to jog.
He ended up at the 24 hour gym.
He went upstairs to work out in the fitness area and to be alone. He wanted to let out his frustrations.
Thoughts of Travis flashed in his mind.
Ryan: Why? Why couldn't I have known you?
Would things have been different? For me? For everyone?
It was while working out that he noticed that he was not the only person at the gym that evening. He slowed down as he watched her swimming in the pool below. She moved so fluidly in the water as if she was doing a ballet. She looked happy and pleasant in the water. As if she did not have a care in the world. This was a different side than Ryan had been seeing the last two days. And when she was done, Sophia squeezed her braid and walked towards the other side of the gym. She had not noticed that Ryan was there or that he was watching her. And when he noticed that he was staring, he started back on the treadmill. A little embarrassed that he was watching her, he shook the thought out of his head.
