The house had settled for the evening after Aj had placed Hannah in her bed. He walked over to his wife who was sitting on the couch and held out his hand to her. With a switch of the remote, he turned off the tv and turned on the stereo to jazz in the room. There the couple began to slow dance in the living room. She giggled as he nuzzled on her neck and whispered sweet nothings in her ear.

Brooklyn: Long day?
Aj: As usual. Appearances here and there with the artists. But as long as I got to come home to my favorite family. It was alright.
Brooklyn: We better be your only family.
Aj: Well it was that one time... (he smiled)
They continued dancing and talking to each other.
They had not noticed that Sophia had walked into the house from hanging out with her girlfriends. She could hear the jazz playing at the doorway and knew what that meant. She walked into the living room and saw her parents in each others arms. She loved it when they were like this. So happy together. She leaned against the wall just to watch for a second. She really could not have imagined what it would have been like if anything else had happened years ago. Ryan: Want to dance?
His voice startled her. She had not noticed she was also being watched.
Sophia: What?
Ryan: I thought you needed a partner to dance.
Sophia: Why on earth would you think that?
Ryan: You looked a little lonely standing there like a wallflower.
Sophia: Do I look desperate or something?
Ryan: No, that's not what I's just you looked like
The look on her face went sour as she looked at him stumble at his words.
Ryan: I was trying...
Sophia: You are trying to get on my bad side.
She walked past him and up to her room.
It was early the next morning when Sophia smelled something unfamiliar yet delicious in the air. The smell woke her out of her sleep. She looked over to see that the sun had not even come up yet. And she walked down the stairs to greet her mother.
Sophia: It's a little early to be cooking breakfast mom. But it smells great.
Only it wasn't her mother cooking. It was Ryan.
Ryan: Thanks. I had the taste for something and needed to cook. It's one of the dishes my mother used to cook for me as a boy when I couldn't go to sleep in the middle of the night. I guess that is why I was such a chubby kid when I was little.
He laughed but noticed he was the only one doing it and quickly stopped.
Ryan: It's enough to share if you would like some.
Sophia looked over at the pot. She had to admit it did smell delicious and she would not mind a small taste. She bit her lip before responding.
Sophia: No, I need to watch my figure.
Ryan: You sure? I don't mind.
Sophia: I said I need to watch my figure. All that stuff looks like it will put too many pounds on me and I don't need to gain so much over break.
Ryan: Well you look alright to me.
She gave him another sour look at his compliment.
Ryan: I mean...nevermind.
Sophia: Yeah well, I'll let you finish making your stuff. I'll just get a piece of fruit instead.
As he removed the pot off the stove he rolled his eyes.
Ryan: Smooth move (he said to himself)
Just as Ryan was finishing his meal, Aj had come downstairs with Hannah.
Aj: Something smells delicious.
Ryan: It's one of my mother's meals that she would cook for me. I had a taste for it. I hope you don't mind me cooking it.
Aj: Not at all. I knew I remembered that smell. Your mother would cook it for us when Travis and I visited the girls in the dorms. And she topped it off with her honey biscuits.
Ryan laughed: Yep.
Ryan: Sir, may I ask you a question?
Aj: What's up?
Ryan: Say you are trying to be nice to someone, but every time you try to say something you end up sounding like a jerk and make things worse.
Aj: Easy, just don't say anything at all. Just stare at them.
The two men laughed.
Aj: No. You just have be cool first. Observe them. Find out about them before you speak. That way when you finally do say something they will listen. And if it's a female, I think some women appreciate the strong silent type. It means you are a good listener. Don't try as hard and things will run much smoother.
Ryan: Just be silent huh?
Aj: You become mysterious. And soon they want to come to you. Or learn more about you.
Aj: Why? Having women trouble?
Ryan: I wouldn't say women trouble. Just one.
Aj: Oh.
Ryan: Someone I met.
Aj: Someone at the gym.
Ryan laughed nervously. He was not going to say exactly who it was to Ryan.
Ryan: Well, I do see her at the gym from time to time. I just never had to try as hard to get someone to like me and this!
Aj: Well if she is worth it, it will take some time. Maybe more than you have left.
Ryan: I know.
Aj: If she is that stubborn you may just have to write this one off. Don't let one monkey spoil the show.
Ryan: Thank you sir.
Brooklyn and Aj were sitting on the couch one evening when he began to laugh to himself.
Brooklyn: What's so funny?
Aj: I just gave advice to Ryan the other day about women.
Brooklyn: Oh?
Aj: Seems like, he's taken an interest to someone he met at the gym and doesn't know how to approach her.
Brooklyn: Hmmm....
Ryan was at the gym as usual. Working out. He had thought long and hard about what Aj told him to do.
Ryan: Strong and silent. Strong and silent. I've never had so much trouble with one person before. Why am I letting this get to me so much?
Just as he was getting ready to finish, he saw Sophia walk up the stairs to the workout room. Their eyes met but he quickly looked away. Trying to make sure that he did not stare at her.
She rolled her eyes knowing that he was going to be in the same place with her. She just knew he was going to try and talk to her as usual.
As she began to walk closer, she noticed that he didn't even looked her way. She walked right in front of him to make sure but again, no response. It was as if she was invisible.
She looked back at him curiously but again, his eyes never once looked back.
Sophia: Hm! Rude (she thought)
She walked over to the treadmills and began exercising. She picked the machine that was directly in front of him but again, Ryan didn't even say a word to her.
Ryan gave a small smirk.
Ryan: I hope this works. Or I just made her my biggest enemy.
And when his workout was over he went over to the relaxation area to take a dip in the hot tub. It was nice and silent and he was the only person in the tub. He closed his eyes and began to sit and relax and allow the bubbles to massage his muscles. He heard someone enter the room from the back of the room. And when he opened his eyes, he saw Sophia getting into the tub.
He became a bit nervous. He didn't know what to say. And then he remembered again, "strong and silent".
Sophia: I don't mean to disturb your peace but the other hot tub is filled with old men and they have a tendency to hit on the girls around here.
Ryan didn't say anything. He barely even acknowledged she was talking to him. He gave a small smile to when she spoke and closed his eyes to relax again.
Sophia's face went sour again. Now she knew he was just rude. And to make things worse, she couldn't understand why she was getting so annoyed.
She tried a couple of other times to say things to him yet his answers were usually a nod and then he would go back to relaxing. It was as if she was talking to a wall.
Finally, she didn't say anything at all. But instead laid back to enjoy the hot tub.
Ryan felt he had finally figured it out. Aj was right. He placed his hands under his head and relaxed even more. He was content and for the first time in days, not worried about messing up with her. The only question was, what to do next? Ryan was like another member of the house. To show how grateful he was for the Allen's hospitality he fixed and improved many of the appliances in the house. He wanted to show how thankful he was for Aj and Brooklyn helping him. And when he wasn't in the house, he was at the gym or walking around town. Sophia was getting ready to hang out with her friends again as usual. Being the daughter of Aj Allen meant she was expected to follow in her father's footsteps and be the life of the party. Although she was not as outrageous as most celebrity kids and kept a low key, she was part of the who's who crowd.
Brooklyn: Why don't you take Ryan with you?
Sophia began to laugh: Mom, you can't be serious.
Brooklyn: I am. Since he's been hear, he hasn't met that many people and it would be nice for him to get out from time to time.
Sophia: That is impossible. I don't even know what he likes to do. What if going to hot spots is not his thing?
Brooklyn: Have you asked?
Sophia: Well, no?
Sophia: Look mom. I thought we went through this. He is the guest of you and dad. Not mine. And the sooner he leaves the better.
Brooklyn: Well he only has a little over a week left before he goes back to re-enlist. I thought it would be nice to make his last week fun. You two are around the same age.
Sophia: I can't believe this. Now I have to babysit him.
Brooklyn: All I am saying is get him out from time to time. You have been nothing but rude to him since he's been here. So showing him a little attention is not going to kill you. I can't believe how spoiled you are acting. This is not how I raised you. This is not how Travis raised you. To think you are treating someone like this. The mention of Travis's name shot a nerve. She knew that Travis would not have liked her acting this way. Especially to anyone that was close to the family. And no matter what she believed or how she was feeling, she knew her mother was right.
There was a look of shame on her face.
Sophia: Fine, I will try. I will try to be more nicer to him while he is here. And maybe......just maybe.....ask him to go out with me and my friends a couple of times.
Brooklyn: That's a start.
Sophia: But I am not promising anything if it's not his style.
Brooklyn: I know this is hard for you to come to terms with. But he is Travis's son. And no matter what, part of who we are. You don't owe him anything. But he does deserve better than what he was handed.
Sophia: I guess.
Sophia kissed her mother goodbye and walked out the house to join her friends in the car.
