Chapter One:

I stood up from the table and cleared away the uneaten food. Joshua had not arrived home yet.

“He must be buried in work”, I thought, and then chided myself for being so stupid.

“I am a woman, not a doormat”, I thought. “A simple phone call to say he would be late, is not too much to ask for!”
After wrapping his plate carefully in tin foil and putting his dinner in the fridge, I stared at the fridge door for what seemed like forever.

Then suddenly, without letting myself think about what I was doing, I opened the door and took his plate back out, grabbed my car keys and headed out the front door.
Fifteen minutes later I pulled up outside his office building.

After checking my reflection in the rear view mirror, I grabbed Joshua’s dinner and headed inside, took the elevator up four floors and walked down the corridor to Joshua’s office.

Then, I stopped.

I stood, frozen and so unsure of what I was doing.

“We have hardly spoken to each other in two years and now, here you are trying to act like nothing is wrong here” I angrily thought to myself, turning around to leave.

Then I stopped and stood there for a moment, eventually deciding that it didn’t matter what happened next, at least I was trying.

I opened the door and entered without knocking.
Joshua was at the floor to ceiling window, staring out at the view.

He stood there with one hand up against the glass and, for a moment, he looked relaxed. Then he slowly turned at the sound of my entry.

His sleeves were rolled up and his shirt unbuttoned and I caught my breath at how handsome he looked.
When he saw me his body tensed up and he began to frown angrily at the intrusion.

His mouth opened to form words but if he spoke, I didn’t hear him because I was mesmerized by his eyes.

His eyes were completely contradicting the rest of him. While his face was angry, and his body tense, his eyes were sad and full of remorse.
I was confused by his reaction to see me and was about to ask him what was wrong when, from his private bathroom, I heard the shower turn on.

Joshua glanced quickly from me, to the bathroom door, and then back at me and the anger left his face, replaced by hopelessness.
I gazed stupidly at him, still confused and then, when I heard the sing-song voice of a woman call out “Josh, I thought we could have a shower before we went out for dinner?” followed by a sexy laugh, I suddenly knew what was happening. My confusion turned to shock, and I stepped back so suddenly that I backed into the door frame and dropped the plate.

Waiting for the sound of the plate breaking, I was so confused when I didn’t hear it, that I glanced down. I just knew that it broke, I felt it break.

Only when I saw the thick shag carpeting on Joshua’s office floor did I realise that it wasn’t the plate I felt breaking.

It was my heart.
I let out a sob, and clutched the door frame behind me, suddenly unable to breathe.

Joshua took a step toward me and reached out, concern and guilt written all over his face, but I couldn’t bear the thought of him touching me, and I didn’t feel that I had the stomach to hear his explanations so, I turned and fled.
After escaping the building I started running to my car, then I realised that when I opened the office door, I had rested the keys on the top of the plate of food I had brought.

They were now lying on the carpet with the plate.

I ran straight past my car and down the street. I just ran, and eventually I had to stop when I could no longer see through the tears.
I struggled to get myself under control, and gradually I managed to turn the stream of tears into a slight trickle.

I started to walk in a daze, down random streets and across empty lots.

I didn’t know where I was going or how far I had walked, until I stumbled out of some bushes and came upon the back entrance of a bar.
It was a familiar bar, with a handsome, very familiar face gazing at me in shocked recognition. I pulled myself up straight, wiped the tears from my face and began to stride straight up to Markus.

He stared at me like the ghost from his past that I was, but then pulled himself together quickly and when I reached him, he smiled sexily and said “Well, of all the bushes in all the world, you had to stumble out of mine”.
I reached up and kissed him hungrily, taking us both by surprise.

He kissed me back for a moment and then pulled back.
He gently cupped my face in his hands so that he could examine my tear stained face.
“Rough night, huh?”
I ignored the question, cleared my throat and asked “Does your offer still stand?”

“Huh?” he asked, surprised.

“The offer you made me, right here in this spot ten years ago, does it still stand.”

He stared at me for a moment, then caressing my face gently he said “Yes, it sure does.”
Thank you for Reading.

It's really good!!
I like how you make short chapters but submit them regularly

Thank you!
I have read all previous comments about chapters being too short as well, and I have tried to make the next ones longer, but I kind of like to get to the point of the chapter and not ramble on. I fear that if I try to make them too long, then I might lose track of the story I already have written in my mind.
My goal at the moment is to try and make them at least 20 pages long for now, although some might be a tad shorter.
