Chapter One:
As I lay on the strange bed in a borrowed shirt and gazed up at the ceiling, I listened to Markus’ soft snoring coming from the room next door.

How strange that I would run into him tonight, of all nights. He was either my Knight in shining armour, or my worst enemy.

I still wasn't sure I should have taken him up on his offer to spend the night, but I had no other choice.

My parents had moved to Sunny Vale years earlier, and my one and only friend was out of town. If I stayed at a hotel, it was too easy for Joshua to find me there and I just couldn't face him tonight. I had nowhere else to go.

This was the perfect hide out. The only place Joshua would never look.
Joshua didn’t know of the choice I had to make all those years ago.

As far as he knew, Markus was an old friend who I’d had a falling out with.

He had held me and comforted me while I cried over my lost friend but had never asked why we had fought or what he had meant to me, and I never told him.
I closed my eyes and my mind drifted back ten years….. “For crying out loud Quinn, would you just stop” Markus snapped. I shot out the back door of the pub and then spun around to face him.

“You’re being ridiculous”, he stated.

“Ridiculous!” I shouted at him.
“I ask you why you had never asked me out before last month, and you tell me that the only reason you asked me now was so that I wouldn’t go out with, what did you call him, ‘that jerk’. Joshua just so happens to be a really nice guy. He cares about me, unlike you”.
“Hold on a second there Quinn. I didn’t say it was the only reason I asked……”

“I don’t care”, I interrupted him.
“I only ever thought about us as being friends, sure we flirted, but it was all innocent fun. But then you had to go and ruin it by letting your stupid ego rule the show. Do you have any idea how confused I was? Confused that you’d asked me out, then confused because I realized I was happy you had asked. Confused, trying to decide whether I would risk my friendship with you by dating you. Then you just go and admit that it was nothing more than a……..a………..what was it Markus? Entertainment?”.
I turned on my heel and stormed off around the side of the building, but he followed me and quickly grabbed me, spinning me around to face him. “Innocent fun?” he scoffs, “are you serious? You call batting your lashes at me for the last three years, innocent fun? Licking your lips every time I smiled at you, begging me to kiss you with your eyes? You call that innocent fun? You knew I wanted you, how could you not know it? I think about you all the time. I never asked you out before because I thought we had all the time in the world. The reason I asked you out then was because yes, I didn’t want you to go out with him.” He turned me and pushed me gently back against the wall, holding me there with his body, his hands on the wall either side of me.

“But only because I wanted you for myself” he said softly, his eyes burning into mine.
“You’re too late”, I whisper back.

I struggle to get out of his grip, but he presses himself more firmly against me, gives a frustrated groan, and then dips his head quickly to mesh his lips with mine, moving his hands to cradle my face.

His mouth is firm and insistent, and as I open my own to gasp, his tongue snakes in to massage mine.

I almost give in to him, to his delicious smell, his delicious taste, and his delicious touch, but determination sets in and I bite down, just hard enough to make him stop.

He jerks his head back from mine, cursing softly under his breath.
“You’re too late” I repeat.
“You've had three years to make your move Markus, and you hesitated. Joshua knew what he wanted, he was certain of what he wanted and he wasn’t afraid to go after it. I care for you Markus, a lot, but as I said, you’re too late. I’m going out with Joshua and I want you back off.”
Markus backed away, releasing me from his prison, and nodded.

“That’s fine. You’ve made your choice. I will back off and not just romantically. But I want you to consider this offer: When he does you wrong and breaks your heart, and you decide that you need me after all, I’ll be waiting for you Quinn.”

He extends his left arm out to his side inviting me to leave and I, Don’t Hesitate.
......... Jolting awake with a start I looked at the clock and saw that it was 9:00am.

Cursing softly under my breath, I threw back the covers and leapt out of bed.

I walked quietly down the hallway and when I passed Markus’ room, I saw that his bed was empty.
After quickly searching the house I found that Markus wasn’t there and I breathed a sigh of relief, glad that I wouldn’t have to deal with the inevitable questions from him about what had happened the night before.

I did, however, find a note by the coffee machine informing me that he had gone to get us some breakfast.
Realising that I didn’t know how long he had already been gone, and how soon he would be back, I quickly dressed myself and rushed out the door.

Grabbing a taxi I headed home to change, then I went to pick up Charlie, “The one honest and reliable man in my life” I thought to myself.

Charlie and I spent the day exploring our town. We made a game out of it and we both had fun, with me even managing a laugh or two.

I didn’t let on that anything was wrong.
That evening after eating out at a local cafe, Charlie and I caught a taxi home and I noticed my car in the driveway.

I opened the front door with the spare key I had hidden and we went inside. Even though the lights were all off, I was so nervous that Joshua would be there.

I wasn’t ready to have that discussion yet.
But I needn’t have bothered.

Joshua, as usual wasn’t at home.
Placing my bag on the kitchen counter I saw my car keys, along with a folded piece of paper, a note.

I picked up the piece of paper and, without reading it, put it in my pocket.

After helping Charlie with some homework that he had ‘forgotten’ until now, we watched a little television and then I helped Charlie into bed.
Finally exhausted from the last few days, I went up to my bedroom and sat on the bed.

Pulling the note from my pocket, I took a deep breath, and I read:

I know there is nothing I can do or say to make this better. I have gone to our apartment in the city for a few days, and hopefully when I return, you will let me explain.
I’m so sorry.

When I finished reading the note I put it in the top drawer, laid down, and I cried myself to sleep.
Thank you for Reading.
