Back in the 1950's Montez Montgomery was a star on the international tennis circuit. . .. THE star in his,
not in the least humble, opinion. It can be said quite without fear of contradiction, that Montgomery was not popular. Not with his peers and not with the public. Granted, he was an exceptional tennis player with an uncanny knack for anticipating his opponents' every shot, but he lacked even the most basic sense of . . . grace? humility? Yes, humility. He was totally lacking in humility and apart from a few 'glad handers' who followed him around the world, he had a very small cheer squad whenever he appeared on court.
Montgomery must surely have been aware of this lack of vocal support, but he only once acknowledged it.
Not in the 5 years he was No.1. Only after he had retired and even then, indirectly. He refused to allow an
official biography to be written, and his autobiography was scant in all but statistics - and a good serve of
self-praise.
Montez Montgomery acquired a nickname around the middle of his term at No.1 - it couldn't be called a 'pet'
name because it was bestowed more in derision than in respect or humour. Montez could not pass a reflective surface,be it a mirror, windowpane, even a rainpuddle on the pavement, without stopping to admire his image therein.
It almost bordered on obsession.- He was a very ordinary looking man - not ugly, but with no outstanding features of any kind. So, he became Mirror Montez - first to his local Tennis Club group, then gradually that widened like a ripple on a pool, until he was openly referred to by the name in the world's media.
Mirror Montez invested most of the prizemoney he acquired over his tennis career, into real estate. Lots of
real estate, but his favourite residence was one he purchased in his last tournament season. This actually
comprised of 2 blocks of land, only one with a house on it. Montez had the house extensively remodelled and used the vacant land to build his own tennis facility. There was only one court for the very good reason that Montgomery had to be one of the players - always!
Montez being Montez, his plan included a glass-fronted viewing box, courtside, and also a player's equipment room
at one end of the court. His preferred surface was grass - so this, his personal court, was also grass.
In perhaps the most illuminating act of his life and one that seemed to say that he wasn't unaware of his
public persona, Montez Montgomery named his new abode - yes, you guessed it!
Mirror Montez!
Whatever Mirror Montgomery's failings in the humility area, his taste was impeccable and this imposing grey brick residence is a credit to that discernment. Covering 3 levels, fully furnished and fitted out, it has a rather 'down home' atmosphere in the huge livingroom which forms one half of the groundfloor area, and the kitchen/dining/meals/sittingroom which is it's twin on the other side of the wide, shallow- stepped entry porch. There is a small, but fully functional, bathroom at one end of the livingroom, which can be accessed from courtside, without entering the main part of the house.
On the second floor, gained by a magnificently carpeted staircase,is the master bedroom and ensuite which has sliding door access to a balcony with deck chairs, overlooking the tennis court - a real vantage point in fact. A lounge, small sittingroom with a chess table and a workstation with 2 computers comprises the rest of this level; there is also a second, smaller balcony overlooking the front garden.
Up one more flight on a single, carpeted stair to the top floor which is home to a double bedroom and a single room, which share a common bathroom. A narrow 'lug' on one end of this floor is occuped by a small but useful exercise area with a treadmill and weight bench.
Apart from the tennis court and amenities already mentioned, there are two single vehicle garages - one on either corner at the front of the block; large beds of flowering azaleas and marguerite daisies highlight the property entrance, and the rest of the area is fully paved.
