The finale.
Raise the spirits.. they were calling me...
"We've been wanting you, Ariana!" "Ariana Hall. You have committed a crime among the Laws of Life." said a strange voice.. surly, in fact.
I couldn't see a thing.
"You have lived among the living!" said another voice, this time, more vicious..
"And betrayed the Grim Reaper." agreed another.
"How?" I screamed. I could feel the cold biting against my skin. The only reason I had come to visit them was because... they had the answer. The spirits were the judges - they created the rules of life. Of course, nobody had heard of it.. why? Becasue nobody had committed a crime.. everyone was either alive or dead. Innocent.
"You know HOW!"
I cringed. It was so cold, and so dark...
"You, Ariana Hall, will suffer justice.."
"...justice, indeed. Your deal will be terminated..."
"...made by Lily Hall..."
"...I'm sorry, Ariana! Just get out of here!" said a voice. Sounded like someone familiar... I screamed.
I didn't know what they meant. They kept on muttering, flying all around me. I couldn't see them, but I could feel them! Their misery... their vegence..
"Go and see the Lady in Gray." And they opened the door, and forced me out. "The Lady in Gray?" I repeated, as soon as the catacombs door was shut.
"Ariana will suffer... by Maria's name!"
I turned quickly. And I saw him, just for a tenth of a second, the Grim Reaper. And then I saw her. She wasn't there before.
The Lady in Gray. Or black, really. "No.. not the Lady in Gray! Forgive me, Spirits.."
"You have betrayed us aswell, Grim Reaper. You used a human being..."
"...as your own toy, because..."
"...you loved Maria..."
"...Love is irrelevant to the laws of Life!" "Ariana. Thank-you for seeing me here."
I nodded.
"I am the Lady in Grey. I judge the fate of a criminal." I flinched. I wasn't a criminal, was I?
"You are not alive, nor dead.. that is a crime." she said. Her voice was dark and demanding.
"So.. you will be alive.. or dead. However, Lily sold your soul to the Grim Reaper. To live. She signed the contract in her own blood." I went to speak. The Lady in Grey held up her hand. "He used you. He took you and used you as his hostage. In order to get to your mother, Maria. She rejected him many years ago.. and, as the eldest, Maria trusted Lily to keep that secret. And she used it against her. To live. When Maria rejected the Grim Reaper again, he totally absorbed you into his world. Here. Forever. He took you when you started to see visions.. that was him trying to establish a connection to you. That is against the laws of Life." "I don't understand." I said. I felt so awful. This was all about me, an average student who lived in an average place. I wasn't anything special.
"Your mother attempted to establish a connection with you, too, but the Grim Reaper notified us, the judges of the Laws of Life, about your mothers connection. She appeared to be a spectrum.. when, actually, she was living. You and Lily both died - but, due to Lily's deed, she lived. On the deed, however, we altered it in order to trap Lily. We cannot control the living world nearly as much as we control this one. It is our weakness. But we survive.
"You died, Ariana. But the Grim Reaper put you back into the real world, into your home, to show Maria what he could do. And then she rejected him.. and you ended up here." "Get me out of here... please!" I screamed. The Lady in Grey smiled.
"All in good time, Ariana. You will leave this place - the Land of the Dead. Nobody lives here. Except us, and Grim, of course. He is the only except to travelling from different worlds. He collects the dead and puts them to rest. I deal with the law-breakers. Like Lily. She is now..." the Lady in Grey pointed to the catacombs.. of course. Lily. She had been trying to apolagise while I was talking to the Judges.. the Spirits.
"... a prisoner. But, she wished that we tell you that she was sorry. So sorry."
"I forgive her."
"Ariana.. you are dead in the real world. Maria and Erin have been notified. They survived the fire. When you saw your mothers' spectrum... that was her attempt to contact you. She is alive. But both she and Erin will miss you. Rest in peace, Ariana."
The Lady in Grey smiled. I smiled back. As the Lady in Grey smiled, I found myself here.
And I saw it.
My grave.
It was beautiful. It's delicate marble was covered in sunflowers - my favourite type of flower.
"I am so sorry, Ariana. I love you! I should have left.. instead of stayed with Lily. Mom and I miss you.. so much." Erin started to cry, and mumbled: "enjoy your flowers!"
Don't cry for me, Erin. I love you too. And Mom.
I was then sent to the clouds.. and I smiled down on my friends, foes, and family.
