Previous parts can be found on my page. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and you will have a great 2012! Cleo took them to a magnificiant sprawling castle. When they were inside she stopped.
"I must go and inform the Duchess of our arrival. Stay here," she commanded. Cleo made for the stairs but Rowan walked after her.
"Just a minute, Cleo." "You were in the diner the day Kyra and Caleb spoke to Stevie and Ruby. I sat next to you at the counter. Just how long have you been following us?" she said quietly. "Hmm, excellent. You aren't quite as stupid as you look," she said, smiling cryptically. She giggled lightly, spun on her heel and left Rowan standing there, her question unanswered. She walked back to her friends.
"Who's this duchess?" she asked.
"She is The Duchess. The Duchess of Supreme Evil, the Empress of Darkness. She commands all that is black and evil in the world," Kyra said, her voice devoid of any emotion. Shortly Cleo returned and led them through many narrow corridors to an imposing door. Without any hesitation she led them in. "Have I done well, your grace?" she purred, lying at the foot of the onyx throne.
"Yes, you have pleased your lady," the Duchess said, stroking the vampire's head. "Your grace," Caleb said stiffly, bowing.
"Caleb, what are you doing? Your allegiance is to the Queen! Why are you bowing?" Kyra hissed. "Caleb may be loyal to the Queen but I command his family. He bows to me," the Duchess said crossly. Kyra said nothing. She glared at the Duchess and cracked her knuckles. The Duchess laughed.
"Really Kyra, am I that bad?" she giggled. "Oh, Lazarus! Am I that horrible?" she tittered, adressing the pale man who stood behind her like a shadow.
"Deliciously, your grace!"
"Show the young witch your present, would you darling?" she said teasingly, looking imploringly at Lazarus from under her eyelashes. "Come Witch," he said, crossing the room to a book on a pedestal.
"Come and gaze upon my runes." Kyra took one look at the pedestal and turned pale. She began to tremble and hunched over as if she was going to be sick.
"The Runes of Khazbar. How can you stand to watch them," she whimpered. "Come! You know you wish to!" he laughed darkly. The pages of the tome turned by themselves behind him. A low and sinister hissing creeped from the pages. Kyra clutched her ears and started to sob. "Nonononono, I can't look! Not at them!" she screamed, hiding her eyes behind her palms. "Lazarus! Your Duchess grows impatient! Administer the test!" "Yes, my lady," he said weakly. The hissing subsided as he ran a white hand over the yellowing pages. He stepped forward and started to chant. His voice seemed to split into many layers, each one harmonising and blending with the others to create a beautiful melody that seemed to resonate throughout each of the trio's very souls. She heard a crash behind her and spun to see Kyra on the floor, fast asleep. Caleb was also asleep but still on his feet.
"Your grace, the girl is resisting the spell," Lazarus said.
"I can see that," the Duchess snapped. "Increase power!" Lazarus started the chant again but this time it seemed to be stronger. Rowan's lids felt very heavy. With a sigh, she fell to the floor.

"Put them in the cells," the Duchess said as she got up. She walked over to Rowan and stood over her. "Make sure this one doesn't escape the House," she murmured, her shoe lightly tapping Rowan's face.
