This page explains how to handle and install your custom content. Note that if your downloads are in zipped files, you will need to extract the files from the zips first before installing them. So, where do you place the files?
Most custom content is created in a PACKAGE file. This includes all CaS items like clothes, hair and makeup, building and buyable objects such as windows, sofas, wallpapers. Basically ANY file with .package on the end of it is a package file.
Package files are placed directly into your MODS folder:
Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/Mods
If you prefer, you can organise your downloads into folders in your Mods folder. This is perfectly safe provided you have the file resource.cfg in your Mods folder which instructs The Sims on how many folders deep to look for your content. If that file is missing from your Mods folder, we explain how to recreate it at the bottom of this page.
Lots, rooms and Sims are accompanied by a number of different files, all of which need to be placed in the TRAY folder:
Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/Tray
The files you place in the Tray folder include:
If by chance you find any package files included with your lot, room or Sim, these need to be placed in the Mods folder as described above, not in the Tray folder.
Once you've installed your lots, rooms or Sims, they should show up in your personal gallery in the game.
If all this sounds like too much hassle, we also offer a Custom Content Manager for our VIP members. The CC Manager:
You can keep and continue to use the TSR CC Manager even without VIP. VIP is only needed to install new content with it or keep existing files up to date.
This text file is created by default by the game and placed in your Mods folder when you run it. It tells your game how many folders deep to read your custom content and ordinarily allows for up to 5 nested folders inside your Mods folder. If this file goes missing, running your game again will normally recreate it. However, if it isn't recreated for whatever reason, simply open a text editor such as Notepad and copy the following text into it:
Priority 500
PackedFile *.package
PackedFile */*.package
PackedFile */*/*.package
PackedFile */*/*/*.package
PackedFile */*/*/*/*.package
PackedFile */*/*/*/*/*.package
Before saving your file, change the file type from TEXT to just FILE (otherwise it will save as a text file instead of a config file and you don't want that). Then in save filename box, type resource.cfg and place this in your Mods folder.Note: custom content installers such as the TSR CC Manager and Vortex will automatically add lines to this file when you use them. This is normal can can be ignored.
