Say you have them buy some food or a book, once they are home, you should be able to get various options by clicking on the item or just dragging it to say a table or counter. I do this all the time, and have had no issues with Sims using purchased items. Prepared meals that are purchased can be eaten on community lots. Just click the plate while it is in the Sims inventory. There should be an option to either 'Eat' or 'Clean Up'. Now for your question about how to upload pictures with your creations, there is a option to 'Add Screenshots' for Sims 3 items being uploaded. The option is located right above the game generated screenshot, once you get the to editing page for your uploaded item. You are allowed to upload up to 8 screenshots. Hope this info helps!
