Room Reno #87: Twin Bedroom Makeover

Welcome back to Room Reno #87 here at The Sims Resource! Today we’re helping a Sim who wants to create a stunning shared bedroom for her twin daughters. Let’s meet the Sims we’re helping!

Meet the Moores!

The Moore family is made up of four members. Naysha married John a few years back, and they have two daughters, a set of twins named Ashley and Megan. Ashley is an artist and loves to draw, sketch, and paint, while Megan is an aspiring scientist who loves to read and work on her different potions. The family recently moved to Willow Creek, and the new house had almost all the amenities that Naysha and John wanted – but it was lacking a third bedroom so that the girls would not have to share anymore.

This is where this week’s Room Reno comes in! Today’s renovation is all about taking one boring bedroom and making into a room that works for two people with their own personalities – without actually having to put up any walls, since that’s out of budget and would require building a whole new hallway to accommodate the extra room. Let’s see what we’re working with!

The Before

This room is…very yellow. It looks like it was originally intended to serve as a guest bedroom or shared hobby space and guest bedroom when it was originally built and furnished. It has a door to the exterior, which is a great feature when the space isn’t going to be used for kids’ bedrooms. That door is going to have to go somewhere else for the room to work in the way it’s supposed to, and that’s the main “big” reno on my list! The door can be replaced with another tall window in its place to allow for the natural light to come in like the glass doors did while keeping the layout closer to a typical bedroom.

The wall color in this room, as I said earlier, is very yellow. While I love yellow, this is definitely a little too much yellow for an entire room (or even a single accent wall, even if the accent wall is small!). Pops of color work best when they’re reserved for just that – pops. It doesn’t always work when they are used for the entire room (unless you really love the brights). There also needs to be a floor replacement in the area near the doors, since that space is all tiled and the bedroom itself has some kind of wood floors. I will probably elect to make the entire floor area wood floors, since it’s a very classic look and works in most rooms depending on the wood stain. Let’s get planning!

The Planning

The planning for this room was pretty simple once I got an idea for the layout. The room is mostly square slash rectangle, which means furnishing as a whole is going to be easier to do than with rooms with a million bumpouts and funky shapes coming into and out of the walls. I’m going to use collapsible screens to define the center of the room and divide up the space into two separate areas, one for each twin. Megan wanted a loft bed and to sleep way up high, which meant she could also fit a desk underneath her bed to save space and allow for a great homework or brainstorming spot. I also put her science table on her side of the room so she can do her work in peace (without her sister looking over her shoulder!).

Ashley is going to have an easel on her side of the room, along with a normal height bed. The loft was too high up for her! Plus, going with a regular bed leaves her even more space to hang her drawings and paintings on the walls above her bed so she can look at them before she goes to sleep. She’s also getting a desk and chair of her own for homework, though she’ll probably end up using it more for drawing. Finally, a big dollhouse will go in the corner across from Ashley’s bed. The dollhouses in this game are absolutely massive, so it was really exciting to be able to fit one in a build without having to scale it down massively. Let’s get building!

The After

I am totally in love with how this room turned out! It definitely feels like two distinct spaces while also being able to transform back into just one room if the occasion calls for it. I went with a color blocked wallpaper because the wall height on this build was one of the taller sizes and the colorblocking helps to split up the tall vertical line and make the room feel a little bit cozier without having to change the wall height and windows and everything else that would come with that. On the left of the room, you can find Ashley’s side of the room – it’s pretty similar to what was described in the planning segment. I really like the details of the art supplies hanging from the pinboard on the wall and the small paintings hanging next to the easel – it really brings a sense of life into the room, which is why I love clutter! On the right side of the room, Megan has her perfect science area that is also matched to the overall color scheme of the room. She loves colorful objects almost as much as she loves science, and it would be sad to take that away from her section! The floral bookshelf is a newly redisovered favorite and I think it could fit in most rooms that I furnish going forward. It’s just too cute!
