Because Catherine of Braganza failed to bear Charles II an heir, on Charles' death, his younger brother James became King. However, James lacked the "Stuart" charm and was instead foolish and stubborn in his conversion to Catholism and his promotion of Catholics into office, which didn't sit well with his Protestant subjects who were still violently anti-Catholic.

Although obviously of royal bearing, for some reason this portrait works well as a home decoration too.
